Terracica, tertulia con amigos, cerveza fresca y música en directo de fondo… Un lujo!!!
A veces, sólo hay niebla
y tus ojos no te llegan
a aquello que quieres ver.
Sólo tienes una barca,
ahí cerquita, a dos palmos,
y nada más puedes saber.
A veces, la niebla oculta
las cosas que no se ven.
Vehicles hustle across the Antioch Bridge spanning the San Joaquin River in morning traffic.
I was determined to find an unobstructed angle in which to feature the steep rise of this bridge. Entering an unlocked gate in the 2am hour, I made my way along this private section of Sherman Island. By the time I was ready to leave, the gate had been padlocked shut and I spent a few extra hours confined to this area until an unhappy property owner chided me for my trespassing ways. He then allowed me to exit.

I have driven by or through the town of Buttonwillow California several times but have never stopped to look around. So this trip I spent a little time exploring. The town of about 1500 people sits on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, west of Bakersfield in Kern County. The town started as Company Headquarters and company store for the Miller Lux Holdings Co in the 1880s. The town and post office were established in 1895 and named Buena Vista. The name quickly became Buttonwillow named for a lone buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) that had long been a landmark in the valley. The Yokut people used the tree as a meeting place on their Trans-valley trail. The Miller Lux Headquarters had been built close to the tree.

Was somewhat surprised to see a Real River (as opposed to our usual creek masquerading as a river) as started the descent on San Antonio Road.
The 366-mile-long San Joaquin River is the longest in Central California, starting in the Sierra's and ending in the Sacramento Delta --- a river I've never even heard of !
There is so much empty and unexplored California territory even tho I've done my darndest to cover it all...
Allá miraba, a lo lejos,
donde se encuentra la ermita,
donde se pierden los campos
y ya comienzan los cielos.
Y aquí, en lo inmediato,
dos quietos palomares
dibujan en los verdes campos
ese redondo aposento
de palomas en su vuelo.
Allí miraba, a lo lejos,
queriendo acercar del cielo
esos dulces pensamientos
que poco a poco bajan del cielo.
Y aquí, en lo inmediato,
unas rosas suavizan mi silencio.
This is a view of my favorite fishing area. I come here every summer to catch rainbow and brown trout. Some years the fish are so hungry I catch fish on every cast and some I have to work hard to get a limit. The fishing is amazing here, but so are the views. Very few people come up to this area and I usually don't see anyone while I'm catching fish after fish. I'm retiring this year and I hope that I will be able to spend even more time in this beautiful area. Two weeks are already planned for this coming summer, I can't wait.

This is a view of the San Joaquin River in the high Sierras. The Jack Ass Meadow campground is next to the bridge where I took this picture. Every year we get up to this location to hike, fish, and camp. The last three years the campground concessionaire hasn't made the repairs and upkeep needed to open up the campground. (Thanks California Land Management) Well I went online to book my camping trip for this summer and surprise! The campground is going to be closed again this year (the fourth) for repairs. Oh well, I'll have to drive up there and hike in to fish again.

the side of the road
on my way to the thrift store, i passed this delightful fellow walking the opposite way and i debated back and forth if i should turn around (and i did only because i knew i'd regret it and didn't want to tell wesley that i'd resisted the urge).
i turned into the vet and he was walking right by my car, so i said,
"sir! may i take a polaroid of you? i like the way you look. i like your glasses"
"oh thanks! yes."
"hi, i'm lesley."
"lesley, nice to meet you. i'm joaquin."
"do you enjoy being photographed?"
'yes ma'am, as a matter of fact, i do."
