End-of-runway operations at Łask Air Base, Poland, prepare F-16 fighter jets from Poland's 32nd Tactical Air Base and the South Carolina Air National Guard for takeoff at Łask Air Base, Poland in support of Operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE, June 5, 2015. U.S. Air Force Airmen from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany and the South Carolina Air National Guard’s 169th Fighter Wing from McEntire Joint National Guard Base, are deployed to Łask Air Base in support of Operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE, during the month of June. These training missions, called Aviation Detachment Rotations, pair U.S. fighter pilots and maintenance crews with their Polish Air Force counterparts at Łask Air Base, during Operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE. This rotation, AvDet 15-3, is the first to combine Guard/Reserve and active-duty units in Poland to offer more diverse opportunities to share best practices and build professional relationships with the Polish Air Force. This bilateral training, hosted by permanently assigned USAF service members assigned to Poland, has taken place since 2012. Through strengthened relationships and engagements with our allies, the U.S. and NATO demonstrate their shared commitment to a peaceful, stable and secure Europe. UPDATE - JULY 2022
On July 2, 2022 at the Battle Creek Field of Flight and Balloon Festival at Battle Creek Executive Airport in Battle Creek, Michigan, the Shockwave Jet Truck experienced a catastrophic rollover event following a mechanical failure, killing driver Chris Darnell. The performance involved Darnell racing against two inverted aircraft from a standing start while driving through a large pyrotechnic display, and had been successfully demonstrated by Darnell numerous times in the past. Video of the performance showed Darnell’s truck outpacing one of the airplanes overhead and about to overtake another when his truck caught fire and appeared to roll. Darnell Motorsports owner and co-driver Neal Darnell, also father of Chris, attributed his son's crash to a mechanical failure, he said in a Facebook post that evening.
