L’Alphajet est biréacteur biplace, conçu pour effectuer des missions école de base, des missions d’entraînement avancé et des missions d’appui tactique. L’Alphajet fut conçu de manière conjointe par Dassault-Breguet en France et Dornier en Allemagne en vue de répondre aux besoins de ces deux pays concernant un avion d’entraînement avancé et d’attaque légère. Compte tenu du souhait exprimé par d’autres pays pour disposer d’une machine d’entraînement, l’habitacle arrière de l’appareil fut surélevé, améliorant ainsi la visibilité en place arrière. La Belgique et l’Egypte se sont par la suite jointes au projet. Les premières livraisons ont débuté vers 1978 et l’Alphajet a connu un franc succès (l’appareil est actuellement utilisé dans 10 pays).
En France, c’est la version "école" de ce biréacteur qui a été retenue par l’armée de l’air - où il est entré en service le 30 janvier 1979 - afin de former les pilotes de chasse. Par ailleurs, la sûreté et les performances de l’Alphajet ont assuré avec succès, depuis 1981, le remplacement des Fouga-Magister de la Patrouille de France. A cet effet, l’Alphajet n’a subi aucune modification fondamentale, si ce n’est : la peinture bleu-blanc-rouge, le phare de nez, le viseur qui est ôté, car inutile. De plus, un pod fumigène fixé sous le ventre remplace le pod canon, ce qui permet de laisser dans le ciel un panache bleu-blanc-rouge.
