How can one not stop by at the sight of two loving friends on a bench and not make a picture of them :-)

This is Jen and her dog Rocky. They were enjoying the warm evening rays of sun in Garibaldi, Oregon. At that moment I had no intention to make an interview for a potential stranger portrait. However, a minute later the opportunity offered itself and I went for it.

My family and I were passing through Garibaldi, Oregon on our way to Cannon Beach. We stopped there for lunch and on the way to the restaurant I saw Jen & her dog on that sunny bench.

(See comment pictures.)

While Jen & I were talking, my daughter and daughter-in-law walked into a store and Jen said that she was its owner together with her husband. Troxel's Gem & Jewelry Co.

My daughter-in-law was interested in the beautiful shells in Jen's store. I took the waiting as an opportunity to ask Jen to participate in my photo project. There was a perfect background curtain at one corner of the store where I asked Jen to stand with Rocky in her arms.

Jen was glad to pose for me. We chatted while my daughter-in-law was making her choice of shells to purchase.

"We are Christians," Jen answered my question to tell me a bit about herself.

"We encourage people to be honourable, not to pass judgement. To enjoy God's creations and worship the Creator.

"We have our stones and jewelry shop, Rock Garden & a Mini Golf. It's not about being rich, it's about making a living, raising our kids in a community, not in a city where we won't see them. We love what we do."

Jen was passionate about her life and work. She pointed out a sign on her display window. It read:

"If you break it, relax. Accidents happen."

"This tells you about us," she smiled as I picked up a beautiful shell from a shelf for another portrait.

In-between photos and conversation, Jen took care of business. My daughter-in-law bought four shells--a big one and three medium sized. While she paid and wrapped the shells, Jen handed me her card and I promised to send her photos.

Jen was friendly and kind, she recommended the best restaurant in Garibaldi and urged us to get there before closing time, which we did.

Thank you, Jen, it was a pleasure to meet you.

The first time around Jen wore her glasses and they got in the way of the shoot. This time around- no glasses and she wore a light green dress with a slightly lighter leaf pattern . It worked out great, this was the first and best shot of the night.

The lens I used is the 18" Wollensak Verito diffused focus lens at f/6 and the exposure was 6 seconds.

Corona (soft drink)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Corona was a brand of carbonated beverage available in the United Kingdom and produced by Corona Soft Drinks. The firm was created by Rhondda grocers William Thomas and William Evans when they saw a market for soft drinks caused by the growing influence of the temperance movement in South Wales. The company's first factory was based in Porth, and eventually the company had 87 depots.[1]

Corona was bought in 1958 by The Beecham Group and subsequently by Britvic Soft Drinks in 1987.[2] It was particularly popular during the 1970s and was famous for delivering its product door to door by "the Corona Man".[3], much like a milk round. The drink was available in several flavours, including the original orangeade and later lemonade, limeade and cherryade. One of their advertising slogans was "Every bubble's passed its FIZZical!"

After the dissolution of the company the original factory was converted into a music recording studio named The Pop Factory, a play on words where the colloquial term for a carbonated drink is 'pop' connected to the style of music, pop.

Jen-Tug.

From Wikipedia:

Jen tug trucks manufactured by Jensen Motors Ltd..

In the late 1930s Jensen diversified into the production of commercial vehicles under the marque JNSN, including the manufacture of a series of innovotive lightweight trucks, built with aluminium alloys, for the Reynolds Tube Company and the prototype for the articulated Jen-Tug which went into production in the late 1940s.

During World War II Jensen concentrated on the war effort and produced components for military vehicles including the turrets for tanks, and on the production of specialised ambulances and fire-engines.

After the war production of the Jen-Tug thrived and Jensen also produced a new range of JNSN lightweight diesel trucks and chassis which were used for a variety of vehicles including pantechnicons and buses. In the 1950s Jensen were chosen by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) to build the bodies for the four-wheel-drive Austin Gipsy.

In Los Angeles there is a small engagement ring chain called Robbins Bros. They have radio ads featuring the two Robbins brothers bickering and cracking wise, telling us that they are the best and biggest engagement store around. I have always had this thought in the back of my mind, that if and when I need an engagement ring, they will be the guys I go to.

So I was excited when Jen asked me to go with her to pick up her engagement ring, which was being resized. Finally I would walk into this locally-famous house o' rings. Maybe I would get to meet one of the Robbins!

But, not to put too fine a point on it, the place sucked. Forget the photo-killing weird florescent light, forget the creepy salespeople who hovered like locust. What very quickly became annoying for me and maddening for Jen was the fact that they couldn't seem to find her ring. Despite the fact that she'd called ahead and been assured it was ready and waiting. Way the place is set up, many of the walls are made of glass, so you actually get to see the worker bees creating rings. Which, ordinarily, would be kind of sweet, but on this occasion it only enabled us to see our salesman flitting around like a chicken with his head cut off, searching for the ring. Into the ring-construction room, out of the ring construction room, into the vault, out of the vault, into another vault.

In exasperation, we asked another salesperson for help. She left, came back and told us it would only be another ten minutes, after the original 15. We asked why. And it was at that moment I felt very sorry for this woman, because all she had for us was "frankly, I don't know." She was but a pawn in this big game.

So, of course, the first sales guy finds the ring, after going back and looking again in the first place he looked.

But it all worked out, because Jen now has her very pretty, very shiny Ring O' Engagement. Which is very cool.

Oh, so fuck Robbins Bros.

The Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg presented the government for the next four years.

For Jen's 30th birthday, a bunch of us drove out to Joshua Tree, did a bit of hiking, a bit of mountain climbing, and a huge dose of Country BBQ, complete with strange-looking old people line dancing and a live country band. After eating copious amounts of beef and cheese fries, we headed back to the hotel for some boozing and playing of hacky sack. With a balloon.

Wacky = awesome.

Oh, and on the way back to the hotel from the honkey tonk dinner, we engaged in a slow chase with a cop. You know, when they follow you, daring you to make a mistake, mentally pushing you into doing something that will justify them pulling you over.

But, as a BLACK MAN IN AMERICA, I am well versed in the art of the slow chase, drive not too slow, not too fast, no sudden turns. Deputy Dog was clearly outgunned by my city driving.

Oh, and here's Jen, outside the hotel, sporting the plastic Bling she received for her bday, in addition to the balloons, the pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game and the alcohol-filled cupcakes.

Happy birthday, you crazy broad.

Jen has the longest legs I have seen on a women (5'11).

She really know how to pose.

I like this one. :)
