Este todoterreno compacto norteamericano acerca su imagen al Grand Cherokee
Compacto y ágil, el Jeep Compass, llegaba al mercado a comienzos de 2006, y ofrecÃa una combinación del exterior y la funcionalidad de un vehÃculo todoterreno tipo SUV con el rendimiento, la maniobrabilidad, el consumo y el precio de un vehÃculo compacto. En otoño de 2010 este modelo recibÃa una profunda actualización de sus interiores y a comienzos de 2011 le llegaba el turno al motor, con el objetivo de adaptarlo a la nueva normativa Euro V que entraba en vigor.
Ahora llega al mercado un nuevo Compass, con una imagen frontal que se parece bastante a la del nuevo Grand Cherokee y mantiene las claves de diseño de la marca, con las 7 ranuras verticales de la parrilla, aunque evolucionadas y actualizadas, pero los faros ya no son redondos. En la trasera no hay un cambio tan evidente, aunque el paragolpes es diferente y los pilotos incluyen diodos LED en algunas funciones. La imagen lateral mantiene su aspecto robusto, con aberturas trapezoidales para las ruedas y un contorno de techo con bastante curvatura.
La llegada de este nuevo Compass viene acompañada de una segunda variante menos potente del motor 2.2 CRD, que ofrece una potencia máxima de 136 CV que se mantienen entre las 3.600 y 4.200 rpm, y el mismo par máximo de 320 Nm, ahora entre 1.400 y 2.800 rpm. Acoplado a un cambio manual de 6 marchas, permite al vehÃculo alcanzar la misma velocidad máxima de 201 km/h, aunque la capacidad de aceleración disminuye y tarda 11,5 segundos en pasar de 0 a 100 km/h. El consumo medio homologado ha bajado hasta los 6,1 litros/100 km.
El chasis del nuevo Compass es el mismo, con una suspensión completamente independiente, aunque se han realizado ajustes en la dirección y en los tarados de muelles y amortiguadores. Este modelo cuenta con tracción delantera en las versiones de 136 CV y con tracción integral en las de 163 CV. Jeep denomina Freedom Drive I al sistema de tracción activa y permanente a las cuatro ruedas. Este sistema de tracción total o 4x4 incluye un Acoplamiento Controlado Electrónicamente (ECC), que utiliza un embrague multidisco, y se puede bloquear, de modo que le permite hacer frente a las condiciones meteorológicas adversas y las superficies de baja adherencia con un plus de eficacia y seguridad.
Las cotas de todoterreno incluyen una altura libre al suelo de 20,5 centÃmetros, con un ángulo de entrada de 20 grados, un ángulo ventral de 20 grados y un ángulo de salida de 32 grados. La altura de vadeo es de 27,9 centÃmetros. Con estas cifras demuestra que puede circular por zonas de cierta complicación, especialmente en las versiones 4x4, aunque no es un todoterreno puro.
