Saturday night cruising in Paprihaven... With Fall comes the desire for outdoor sports, including off-road driving.
John Neverjohnnie, the Paprihaven bowling pins magnate,* has fielded three of his mud-worthy vehicles from his vast garages.
To drive with him is the always scintillating Midge Myrtle, the felonious rogue Romeo Moretti, and the astoundingly aged Hildeburh Hjelmstad.
They're all gathered** for one of Mr. Neverjohnnie's famous "convoys" down Market Street and then on to the Paprihaven Sporting Reserve in the Eastern Woods.
While John Neverjohnnie has elected to drive his prized Baja Bug, and the always alluring Midge Myrtle has opted to pilot the Jeep CJ7,*** the rascally Romeo Moretti will commandeer the heavier 4-wheel drive Bronco.
"Hey Pops, listen to those tires! This monster doesn't want the street! It's begging to go off road!"
"Ikke kall meg "Pops"!"
"Yep, we're gonna beat Neverjohnnie using his own Bronco! Ha!"
"Du er en tåpe! Du kommer til å få oss begge drept!"
"Woo-HOO! I feel invincible in this beast!"

"Sweet Midge, do have a care as a Jeep is as rugged as they come but they can tip."
"I assure you I shall drive with as much caution as the abandonment of off-roading demands, Mr. Neverjohnnie."
"You can always ride with me, Midge, darling, and not worry about such!"
"I assure you I am not worried, Mr. Moretti. I have plenty of driving experience. Now if you boys will step back and allow this girl to do her part, I think you may all end up surprised."
"Skynd deg! Å stå på en parkeringsplass er ikke å kjøre i skogen!"
"Ah, Mr. Hjelmstad, grows impatient. Let us be off then."

At first I thought this was a Jeep (CJ-7), but it rather seems to be a first generation SsangYong Korando.
Bought it new in 1977. Only had it for less then 2 years. Rolled it over. Wonder what it would worth today? I paid less then $5000 new! I can't remember if I use a Canon FTB or AE-1.
A little bit of confusion with this Matchbox Jeep 4X4 casting which first made its debut back in 1983. It has never specified which CJ its meant to represent but i'm sure this is more CJ-5 than the CJ-7 they have put on this latest Top Gun Maverick version. Mint and boxed.
Described as a "4x4 Roader" on the baseplate, this little Welly model is undoubtably meant to represent a Jeep, possibly a CJ-5? Its a realistic but unlicensed casting they've been making for decades and knowing Welly will probably continue to produce it until the mold turns to dust! Almost certainly originally part of a multi-set this almost mint little example was given to me recently as part of a charity shop haul.
JEEP CJ7
Forse poteva appartenere a qualche Corpo Vigili del Fuoco
In ogni caso demolita senza pietà
Then as now, the products of Siku were always a cut above your average Matchbox, Corgi and Hot Wheels etc and were priced accordingly and explains why I never had many bought for me as a child. Back then they were made in West Germany and justified their higher prices by the sheer quality of their construction which always felt much weightier than the competition. This Jeep CJ-5 feels as heavy as a brick and is no doubt just as long lasting, simple but well cast especially around the front end.
Im not sure if this colour was a standard issue as I seem to remember similar looking vehicles being given away in various promotions for Kelloggs Frosties cereal. One of two recent charity shop finds kindly given to me recently.
A mainstay in quite a lot of toy makers 1/64 ranges over the years is the evergreen Jeep CJ-7, this being the Hot Wheels version. Close up its actually a good casting with realistic proportions and reasonably normal looking graphics. Part of the 2015 range which has appeared in B&M Bargain stores seemingly before anyone else. Mint and boxed.
This is before a large addition to this back wall seen on Jan 7,1989 that included a Sears and other smaller stores and a nicer food court that was completed by the end of that year.

Wonderfully weighty model of a Jeep CJ-7 by Majorette and dates from a time when pocket money diecasts had full metal bodies AND baseplates!
Chunky and simplistic with a genuine feeling of robustness it really does highlight that "they don't make them like they used to". Thanks once again to Mikaela for finding this example recently in an antique type store and using her charms to get a discount on this and other similar aged Majorettes ;-p
Very much mint and boxed.

A surprisingly new casting considering how old the real vehicle is having made its debut only in 2012 is the Hot Wheels Jeep CJ-7 and possibly one of the most modelled of the CJ's. We all know its a deliberately simple and rugged looking vehicle and so even Hot Wheels couldn't muck it up, its a well proportioned casting with no evidence of being modified. This is its latest recolour and follows with HWs recent obsession with surf and beach themed liveries and is part of the latest Surfs Up five vehicle set. Mint and boxed.
Dare I say quite a reasonable looking Jeep CJ-7 based casting by Tian Hong. Not a vehicle which is easy to get wrong but all the same its pretty accurate and crisply cast. Part of a 25 vehicle set found recently at Smyths Toys finally replacing the Pioneer sourced ones which they've been selling for at least a decade completely unchanged! Mint and boxed.
Thanks to Far Eastern toy companies such as Welly who obviously don't believe in making their models for just a few years, its still possible in 2014 to buy castings which date back literally decades. Welly started out making unlicensed cheapo diecasts and even though their newer stuff are some of the best on the market, they still happily churn out relics from their past. This ancient looking Jeep CJ-7 Renegade was bought recently from Aldi as part of their 20 vehicle sets. The casting thankfully doesn't appear worn and the addition of glossy metallic paint helps things look a bit more upto date.
Mint and boxed.
Vivid and glossy metallic blue finish help to disguise the age of this geriatric casting. In continous production for over 30 years, it has been seen in endless different colours and liveries and sold under many different brand names. Quite a crisp casting with decent detailing which has worn the years well. Part of a 20 vehicle set. Mint and boxed.
This very chunky looking Jeep CJ-7 by Welly complete with odd square headlamps has been in continuous production for decades and now finds itself in 2014 with a very glossy metallic blue finish. Welly must keep their molds in good condition as very few of their old castings show particular signs of wear and tear. Not bad at all for cheap multiset fillers.
Part of a 20 vehicle set recently sold at Aldi. Mint and boxed.
Another Welly stalwart dragged kicking and screaming into 2014 with the aid of modern metallic finishes is their Jeep CJ-7 Renegade. It has been in production for decades in a huge variety of different liveries. This very glossy looking metallic dark blue version appears to be the latest one and is currently available in a 20 vehicle set at Aldi. A nice crisp casting. Mint and boxed.
Part of the excellent Flying Customs range of Hot Wheels models which briefly appeared at Poundland stores earlier this year. As this is a non mainline model, the Jeep CJ-7 you see here has a better standard of detailing with a suitably retro look colour scheme. Mint and boxed.
Undoubtably based on an old Jeep possibly a CJ-7 is this army vehicle by Pioneer. Nicely cast and finished for such a cheap model, Pioneer are often overlooked but can be very collectable. This is part of a 25 vehicle set which is the most common way to buy models from this manufacturer. Mint and boxed.
