On January 6 the Moon is 14.36 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

January 6, 2021 was a day we saw an assault internally on our democracy. A dark Wednesday for America, indeed. Our votes count and democracy succeeded. Terrorists will not prevail.

I had a camera transplant! ha.
This is one of the Christmas ornaments from one of our outdoor Christmas trees.... it's a little scratched up, but I thought it still looked kind of neat.

FLL clogged with luggage carts and news trucks the day following the Jan. 6th shootings. And, yes, all my airport friends and associates were safe.
The foreground DL a/c is NOT the one from MSP. It is a flight that had arrived from DTW at 1306 on Jan 6th.
As seen on the 1 year anniversary of the storming of the Capitol.
There were more reporters there than demonstrators or tourists.
Jupiter (brightest) and Mars (dimmer, just to the right of Jupiter) in a very close conjunction (about 16 arc minutes or 1/4 degree apart) on the morning of January 6, 2018.
The double star Alpha Librae, or Zubenelgenubi, is to the right of the planet pair and resolved here. Two of the moons of Jupiter are also resolved.
I shot this from home on a mild winter morning but with cloud moving in from the west, so the timing was perfect.
This is a stack of 4 exposures mean combined for the ground to smooth noise and one exposure for the sky, all 2.5-seconds at f/4 with the Sigmas 50mm lens and Canon 6D MkII at ISO 800. Twilight and moonlight illuminate the sky and ground. Framed with a Rule of Thirds composition.
Comet Lovejoy on January 6, 2014, shot though a telescope for a close-up view with a field of rouhgly 4 x 3 degrees. The green coma and blue ion tail are prominent. The tail was just barely visible through binoculars. I shot these frames betwen end of twilight at 6:30 pm and moonrise at 7;15 pm. The comet was a day before its closest approach to Earth.
Technical — I shot the images through the TMB 92mm refractor at f/4.4 for a roughly 400mm focal length, with the Canon 6D at ISO 1600 for a stack of 4 x 2 minute exposures, blended with Mean combine mode for noise reduction. The mount was guided on the comet head using the Orion Starshoot autoguider aand Borg 50mm guidescope controlled by PHD Guiding. Thus the slightly trailed stars.
At least that was true several mornings in early January, but the last couple days were pretty drab and gray mostly as the heavy rains move in, temps warm up, snow melts, and worries about flooding are heavy in Western Washington and Oregon. Memories of the January storms of 2009 creep in, I-5 was flooded for quite awhile, and flooding caused damages in many areas, with landslides and erosion and flooded homes.
That was also the storm that brought me a winning shot... the double rainbow in the comments below which was also in the Weather Guide calendar, and is now hanging as a framed and matted 16 x 20 in our local clinic along with some lenticular shots over local mountains. one day I will find a way financially to do gallery shows, I promise....

My appreciation of birds has grown significantly over time. While I wouldn’t exactly call myself a birder, I do enjoy watching them and learning about them. They’re fascinating creatures!

Herring is a Trump supporter but he believes Republicans need to find a new face for the next presidential election.
RachelK (not to be confused with RachelB) is finishing up her 365 here soon... she asked for some help going out with a bang. So I got this shot... made a print, and got a little creative!
long ago, my original intention was to hit the tracks in a dress... but rain, and snow have impeded the venture... and today was just too dern cold (and still wet) to attempt that!
I did end up enlisting a photog assistant, a little freaked at the idea of my camera on the tracks, on a tripod, and me on my belly... what if I got distracted and missed a train!?
Thanks Andy, for your watchful eye, and not making TOO much fun of me and the whole process!

“Perhaps we need some outside universal threat to make us recognize [our] common bond. I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world.”

At our church's Christmas Eve dinner, these little girls found each other. The baby is from Brazil and the two older are recently from Ukraine. Although they could not speak to each other, they still managed to communicate and played together for well over a hour, almost two. Too bad adults are not that adaptive.
I thought this was a wonderful moment, that shared bit of joy.
Yes, we are all in this together even if we somehow manage to forget that basic truth every now and then. Just something to think about on January 6th. Slainte !
Took this is a friend's garden an effort to practise my skills at low light photography. I had intended taking several such shots this Christmas but the snow and water shortages totally distracted me and I have taken very few shots in last few weeks. Can't wait for spring and the longer evenings.
Fridays are my toughest day for this project. I still work 2 jobs most Fridays and there's not much time to take my shot. When the weather is good, I've done a quick shot on my lunch break or on the way from my regular job to my p/t job. But it is just way too cold to be outside any longer than dashing from the car to shelter. My original plan was to shoot something after I got home tonight, but I'm so glad that I decided to try a few shots with my iPhone. I didn't end up pulling out of the parking lot there until 11:20 so I wouldn't have had much time at all once I got home. I had take a few shots using the interval timer and this one was just grabbing my phone from the counter and this one last shot went off. I ended up liking this the best.
Hope you all have a great weekend!! I am going to bed with no alarm and will wake whenever I wake up!

Terrorists Foreign (9/11) & Domestic (6/1) Get Served Justice Same Day (8/1) - IMRAN™
One more Jan 6 insurrectionist enemy of democracy gets sentenced. A few of those 7-years in Guantanamo will help him lose weight and some traitor traits.
Speaking of terrorists being put down, President Obama took out Bin Laden. Today, finally, his former #2 current US President Biden got to take out Bin Laden’s former #2, current head of AlQaeda, Al-Zawahiri, in a drone strike in, where else, Afghanistan.
Put down all enemies of the United States, foreign and domestic, I say. Or send them to Gitmo.
