James Dean starred in the 1955 movie Rebel Without a Cause, but this biker seems to be a Rebel Without a Clue… During a tour of Senegal, West Africa, our minibus leap-frogged this bike several times on a busy main road for some 10 km. Despite having a suitcase precariously balanced on the steering handlebar, the rider was able to drive through three police checkpoints without any hassle.

In his entry on Crax, great Carolus Linnaeus refers to the work of Ulisse Aldrovandus (1522-1605), the Italian 'Father of Natural History'. He'd used the name Gallus curassavicus ('Curaçao Hen'). Linnaeus also mentions Denis Dodart (1634-1707) who names our bird Crocq Indien. Of Crax Linnaeus writes expressively: 'Pennae caput tegentes revolutae', something like: head feathers rolled upwards'. That reminds me, of course, of the post-WWII men's hairstyle, the quiff, considered revolutionary against e.g. parental and societal authority. Think of the hair-styling of James Dean or Elvis Presley.
The Crax in ARTIS was specifically named and described as 'blumenbachii' by Johann Baptist van Spix (1781-1826), who had traveled to Brazil 1817-1820 as a naturalist. He saw our Bird near Rio de Janeiro. If you leaf throught Spix's works you will notice that he greatly admired Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), quoting his insights many times. Blumenbach is the 'Father of Biological Anthropology' and contrary to many theologians in his time he held that human beings should be studied biologically just like any other natural creature.
It's been a long time, it's a new year, and I was feeling a bit creative so here you go. A little parody on parody action with (my) parody of Gottfried Helnwein's parody "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" of the true classic "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper.
We had a new welcome sign put up in the past couple of weeks that also directs visitors to the James Dean birthplace site. The sign has a 3-D look, but it is flat.
The movie, "Giant" was made in and around Marfa, Texas. John Cerney installed this gigantic roadside mural to honor the movie - James Dean's last. We went to Turkey in April of 2016. I was incredibly surprised with what we saw. We visited Alanya, Antalaya, Istanbul, the Kursunlu Falls, Laodicea as well as the Green Canyon and much more. We were very impressed with the welcome, the friendliness and just the sheer uniqueness of the country.
I would have liked to have stayed much longer but you can’t have everything in life.

In 1956, one of the most iconic American western films was shot in Marfa, Texas…”Giant.” There’s not much left of the set today, but in 2018, artist John Cerney made huge outdoor murals on plywood of the movie’s stars. James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor are the feature murals on highway 90 on the Wyatt Ranch, along with the famous Benedict house and the yellow convertible from the film in the backdrop. Rock Hudson is behind the wheel of the convertible.

This past weekend Lisbon, Maine celebrated its annual Moxie Days again after a couple years hiatus. Moxie is a soft drink developed here in Maine. Sunday morning featured a car show and this is a photo of a 1950 Mercury that was part of that event. The figure is that of James Dean who is a legendary Hollywood actor who made three movies before he was killed in a car accident when he was 24 years old in 1955.
He is remembered as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. [Wikipedia]
On the way to Paso Robles, a sign stands near the spot where film actor James Dean died in a car crash in 1955.
