Located in Bristol’s city centre, this handsome late 18th-century church was designed in 1789 by local architect and carver James Allen to replace a Medieval church deemed unsafe for use. Allen retained the 15th-century west tower of the old church, intending it to be 'raised and modernised’ in a Classical fashion, but the plan was never carried out and the church is an unusual - but pleasing - blend of both periods.
There is a fine ring of eight bells, all cast by local founders from the 15th-yo the 19th-century. At the east end is a reredos of 1716 and at the west a gallery of 1728-32, both transferred from the previous church. On the north side of the chancel is a superb 18th-century organ case. Some of the other furnishings are 18th-century, but most date from the 1896 restoration by H Roumieu Gough.
They are excellently designed and all contribute to one of the best interiors in Bristol. Little now survives of the old parish buildings, once home to rich clothiers, glovers, glassmakers and wine importers whose trading activities supported the church. One of the few remaining inns of the parish is the Seven Stars Tavern, right next to St Thomas’, where anti-slavery campaigner, Reverend Thomas Clarkson, gathered information on the slave trade. His evidence helped bring about the abolition of slavery in Britain.

LANGLEY was named after Thomas Langley, Hudson Bay Company director (1800-30). In October 1824 Governor Simpson of the HBC, under the misapprehension that the Fraser River provided a navigable route to the Interior, wrote: "I imparted to Mr. McMillan my views in regard to extending the trade to the Northward of Fort George [Astoria] and pointed out to him the importance of having an Establishment at the mouth of Frazer's River [sic]....". Later this same year Chief Trader McMillan made a reconnaissance of the Lower Fraser Valley and in 1827 founded Fort Langley. In 1839 the original fort was abandoned and a new establishment [at the site of present-day Fort Langley] built.

R. W. HEALE OF CLOVERDALE DROWNED IN ROAD DITCH - Robert William Heale of Coast Meridian Road, Kensington Prairie, met his death by drowning on Thursday night, Dec. 4th. It is believed that he drowned in the ditch in front of his home. The body was taken from the Nicomekl River, a short distance from his home, and it is believed the body had passed through the flood gate on the big 12-foot ditch. It is thought that the fatality occurred late Thursday night. Shortly before the presumed time of the drowning, a neighbor saw Heale's truck proceeding down the road, at a moderate speed and in a careful manner. Next morning the truck was found standing on the bridge into the Heale property, with the right front wheel down over the edge. There is no guard rail on the culvert. The ignition was off, and the lights had been switched off also. It is assumed that the deceased, after misjudging the turn onto the bridge, had stopped and got out. Investigating the position of the truck, he must have slipped and fallen into the ditch in which there was 8 feet of water. Surrey Police were notified, and the body was recovered by dragging. There was no inquest. Born in England, the late Mr. Heale was 57 years of age. He had been a resident here for 17 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Jack Heale. Allen retained the 15th-century west tower of the old church, intending it to be 'raised and modernised’ in a Classical fashion, but the plan was never carried out and the church is an unusual - but pleasing - blend of both periods.
There is a fine ring of eight bells, all cast by local founders from the 15th-yo the 19th-century. At the east end is a reredos of 1716 and at the west a gallery of 1728-32, both transferred from the previous church. On the north side of the chancel is a superb 18th-century organ case. Some of the other furnishings are 18th-century, but most date from the 1896 restoration by H Roumieu Gough.
They are excellently designed and all contribute to one of the best interiors in Bristol. Five years ago, a young acquaintance of mine decided that life was not worth living. She ended her life because she saw no way out of her depression. Devastated, I wanted to shine a little light for others who may feel lost or scared so I opened a Flickr account and posted a few photos with wonderful quotes from powerful innovators. A few people came and clicked into the images and wrote wonderful comments for me. One after the other, global connections began and I could feel how many people, regardless of race, religion, gender, nationality or economic background were thinking similar thoughts and shared wonderful pieces of their creative way of experiencing life. When my camera broke, I did not want to abandon my account so I started to play with photo manipulations and paint programs. I stumbled upon an art form in which I feel alive and in a repeated state of trust and surrender. The more bravely I now play, the more I want to discover this relationship with my story. Out of the pictures pour poems and more aspiring thoughts. A student of “Ancient Secrets of Success for Today’s World”, I feel that my training has activated a deeper expression of Self and my intention to help others reveals a greater understanding of my Teacher’s words in the above quote. I think this would have to be it. I saw lots of things today that I consider beautiful but this view looking out over Skaha Lake was the best!

Two workers with protective glasses and gloves release molten metal from an immense cauldron and pour it into forms to make ingots. 'Teeming Ingots' by American illustrator, printmaker, and painter James Edmund Allen (1894-1964) is exemplary of his preferred subject matter, portraying steel workers casting metal. Despite the tough economic conditions of the 1930's, this image, painted in 1935, evokes a sense of power and strength, typical of Allen's depictions of American labor.

While focussing on these words of James Allen, this mask exercise dives into Unity and discovers Willpower and Flight or symbolically the Lion and the Eagle. To break out of the cycles of repeating history over and over, we must fly higher in our aspiratons, innovate new pathways and have a lionheart to believe in all possibilities and stay true to our course. James Daniel Allen was born 3 April 1842 in Monroe County, New York, the son of Ethan Allen (born circa 1808) and Catherine Allen (1809-1883). In 1850, James was living with his parents and three siblings in Mendon, NY, where his father worked as a laborer. In 1860, the family was farming in Rochester, NY, and James was listed as a clerk. James was married circa 1865 to Nancy Augusta Kelly (1844-1909), and the couple had at least three children. No later than 1868, James and his family, as well as his widowed mother Catherine, were living in Los Angeles, California; James was listed as a farmer. In the 1880 census, James was working as a bookkeeper in Los Angeles. James D. Allen passed away on 12 June 1884.
