New Catholic church, funded by donations. The neighborhood was rebuilt by the locals without government help. Many homes of the fishermen had been destroyed in the civil war.

Gopuram of Naga Pooshani Amman Kovil

Gopuram is a monumental tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of any temple. This forms a prominent feature of Koils, Hindu temples of the Dravidian style. They are topped by the kalasam, a bulbous stone finial. They function as gateways through the walls that surround the temple complex.

Jaffna is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

Jaffna.

Jaffna the quiet

Jaffna. (Sri Lanka) - Since the end of the Tamil separatist war against the Sinhala state in 2009, Jaffna has become one of the quietest cities in Sri Lanka. In 2014, only the mornings and evenings were a bit busy. Without excess. The rest of the day the city plunged into a certain torpor and life went on slowly. Jaffna due to its predominantly Hindu population resembles India but without the hysteria that reigns in the neighboring subcontinent.

I think this picture of two young high school girls riding home on their bikes is a pretty good illustration of the atmosphere in Jaffna.

The gate tower is decorated with many colourful, mythological figures, half-human, half-divine.

The sacred fire in Hindu temple.

There are numerous mysteries, which provide the reference to the outstanding importance of the eternal flame.

The fire is seen as a benevolent living deity who dwells among men. Each member of this ancient societies will certainly have recognized the sacred nature and elemental properties of fire.

Sunsets are always fascinating. This was captured in Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka during my last visit. This was one of the phenomenal sunsets I've ever seen and covered. Beautiful scenery from a war torn city which is now trying to get back to normalcy after a 30 year brutal civil war.

Nature captured, wrapped around and burst the walls of the bombed-out remains of the old Kachcheri, former administrative office.

The bus is waiting for passengers coming from the ferry, also for me and my friends. The destination is Jaffna Bus Stand (45 Min)

Entering the historic Dutch fort in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

Built from coral bricks and recently suffered from damage caused by persistent civil war between 2 local ethnic groups, the fort is now being restored to its former glory. Only ruins and bullet holes tell the tale of brutal battles and suffering. It is somehow symbolic to see a woman holding a child and walking peacefully with the setting sun into a place that has finally changed for good.

Sun is setting in Kankesanthurai, Jaffna.

Jaffna, August 2018.

Waiting at street shop for work.

Ferry to Nainativu.

As the only passenger I got out on Nagadeepa Buddhist Temple. All the nice people went on to Naga Pooshani Amman Hindu Kovil. The cordial people waved goodbye. Often, the consistently nice people in northern Sri Lanka have touched my heart. This passage with the very simple wooden barge with loud, chugging engine to propel the boat across the Palk Strait, with all the friendly people was one of my best experiences in SL.

Kathurugoda Ancient Vihara

Impressive beautiful and mysterious at the same time lying on a Palmyra palm grove about two dozen one to two meters high buddhist Dagobas. The 2000-year-old ruins were discovered in 1916; Their origin is the subject of a controversial debate. The ruins are closely guarded by the SL Army, because they are in the middle of a hindi Tamil residential area. On a large part of the foundations are Tamil houses for a very long time.

Needy shoemaker on a staircase of the New Market Complex. Each shoe can be repaired with skill. Many people can not afford new shoes.

Main-entrance of the old bombed-out Kachcheri, former administrative office, pockmarked by bullets and shrapnel is a sorrowful spectacle.(built in the 19th century); Now a civil war monument.

The Kachcheri was the LTTE police HQ in 1990. (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam);

In 1995 the SL army wrested control.
