One of the smallest members in the crow family in Europe. Can be very approachable in towns and built up areas but are wary in the countryside. Adults have very distinctive grey eyes and a close look will reveal a purple gloss on the wings and back, not forgetting the grey cast on the underparts. The Jackdaw is known for its 'kjack' contact calls.

What may look like a milky cloudy eye here is in fact the nictitating membrane or sometimes known as the third eyelid. This membrane is transparent and will help to keep the eye moist and protect the eye from wind, dust and potential hazards. As well as birds having a nictitating membrane other animals such as reptiles and some mammals also have them.

(Corvus monedula) A pair of jackdaws are nesting in next door's chimney. They are very noisy!

Sometimes you have to work with what you've got.....for me its Jackdaws. I have these beautiful corvids visiting my garden all year, however its only this time of year I can get to photograph them due to the direction of the sun/position of the garden. This was taken when the sun shines down the driveway in the evening, between ours and the neighbors house.

I have fat ball feeders up most of the time, however for this shot I just put food in one location. Even then its a challenge as the neighbors on both sides are often in their gardens, as the sun is out......a little more disturbance. I just have to be patient. I am trying for the interaction of a pair in mid air fighting over the food tray. It will take some time, however here's hoping for some more action shots soon :) Plus for the weather to improve here in the UK.....I wont go on about this :)

Thanks for all who view and comment on my images, much appreciated. Taken in my garden.

This Jackdaw I have been watching for some weeks now and he has adapted brilliantly to using only one leg.
