Nesta imagem, que acumula mais de 16 horas de exposição, podemos observar várias galáxias de diferentes tipos localizadas na constelação do Grou. Observamos galáxias elípticas, espirais e irregulares.
As galáxias elípticas têm uma aparência elipsoidal ou esférica suave e têm muito menos estrutura do que as galáxias espirais. Galáxias elípticas são normalmente encontradas em aglomerados de galáxias como na Cadeia de Markarian em Virgem. O pensamento atual entre os astrônomos é que a maioria das galáxias elípticas se formou a partir de colisões e subsequentes fusões de galáxias espirais. Devido à sua taxa muito baixa de formação de estrelas e às suas populações de estrelas vermelhas e antigas, as galáxias elípticas são por vezes referidas coloquialmente como “vermelhas e mortas” pelos astrônomos [1].
As galáxias espirais, como o nome sugere, se assemelham a cata-ventos giratórios gigantes com um disco de estrelas em forma de panqueca e uma protuberância central com uma grande concentração de estrelas. São cercadas por halos, misturas de estrelas antigas, aglomerados de estrelas e matéria escura – material invisível que não emite nem reflete luz, mas ainda exerce atração gravitacional sobre outra matéria. As estrelas mais jovens formam-se em braços ricos em gás, enquanto as estrelas mais velhas podem ser encontradas em todo o disco e dentro do bojo e do halo [2]. Nossa galáxia, a Via Láctea é um exemplo deste tipo de galáxia.
As galáxias irregulares têm formas incomuns. Algumas com aparência de palitos de dente, anéis ou até mesmo pequenos agrupamentos de estrelas. Elas variam desde galáxias anãs irregulares com 100 milhões de vezes a massa do Sol até grandes galáxias pesando 10 bilhões de massas solares. Os astrônomos pensam que as formas estranhas destas galáxias são por vezes o resultado de interações com outras. Por exemplo, uma galáxia espiral que passa por outra com uma atração gravitacional mais forte pode perder parte do seu material, tornar-se distorcida e assumem uma nova forma [2]. Temos duas galáxias irregulares vizinhas muito conhecidas e próximas, localizadas no céu do hemisfério sul, são a Pequena e a Grande Nuvem de Magalhães.
A galáxia elíptica localizada no canto superior direito da imagem é catalogada como IC1459 ou IC5265. Ela é uma das galáxias mais próximas de nós que hospeda um buraco negro supermassivo [3]. É classificada também como AGN, galáxia com núcleo ativo. Este núcleo ativo é uma região compacta que emite uma quantidade significante de energia ao longo do espectro eletromagnético com características onde a luminosidade não é produzida por estrelas [4].
Possui uma magnitude visual de 11.85 e uma distância de 85 milhões de anos-luz.
No canto esquerdo, temos a galáxia espiral barrada catalogada como NGC7418 com uma magnitude visual de 11.39 e distante 59 milhões de anos-luz e ao centro temos outra galáxia espiral barrada catalogada como NGC7418A.

In this image, which accumulates more than 16 hours of exposure, we can observe several galaxies of different types located in the Grus constellation. We observe elliptical, spiral and irregular galaxies.
Elliptical galaxies have a smooth ellipsoidal or spherical appearance, and they have far less structure than spiral galaxies do. Elliptical galaxies are typically found in galaxy clusters such as the Markarian Chain in Virgo. Current thinking amongst astronomers is that most elliptical galaxies formed from the collisions and subsequent mergers of spiral galaxies. Due to their very low rate of star formation and their populations of old, red stars, elliptical galaxies are sometimes colloquially referred to as ‘red and dead’ by astronomers [1].
Spiral galaxies, as the name suggests, resemble giant rotating pinwheels with a pancake-like disk of stars and a central bulge or tight concentration of stars. These galaxies are surrounded by halos, mixtures of old stars, star clusters, and dark matter – invisible material that does not emit or reflect light but still has a gravitational pull on other matter. The youngest stars form in gas-rich arms, while older stars can be found throughout the disk and within the bulge and halo [2]. Our galaxy, Milky Way, it`s a sample of this type.
Irregular galaxies have unusual shapes, like toothpicks, rings, or even little groupings of stars. They range from dwarf irregular galaxies with 100 million times the Sun’s mass to large ones weighing 10 billion solar masses. Astronomers think these galaxies’ odd shapes are sometimes the result of interactions with others. For example, one spiral galaxy passing another with a stronger gravitational pull could lose some of its material, become distorted, and morph into a new shape [2]. We have two very well-known and close neighboring irregular galaxies, located in the sky of the southern hemisphere, they are the Small and the Large Magellanic Cloud.
The elliptical galaxy located in the upper right corner of the image is cataloged as IC1459 or IC5265. It is one of the closest galaxies to us that hosts a supermassive black hole [3]. It is also classified as AGN, active galactic nucleus. This active nucleus is a compact region that emits a significant amount of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum with characteristics where luminosity is not produced by stars [4].
It has a visual magnitude of 11.85 and a distance of 85 million light years.
In the left corner, we have the barred spiral galaxy cataloged as NGC7418 with a visual magnitude of 11.39 and 59 million light years away and in the center we have another barred spiral galaxy cataloged as NGC7418A.

The K-Pop Academy features special guests and speakers each week and provides students with opportunities to participate in various activities related to a Korean topic.
In the 2nd week of the programme, our students were able to get a good work out at the Taekwondo session led by Master Jongho Kim. They were able to practice their punching and kicking techniques that is closely associated with Korea’s national sport.
