Karen Sortio was responsible for the campaign, and sales of the Z3 spiked as the film sat at number one at the Box Office. In the 1996 production run, more than 15,000 roadsters were sold out by the time the car was introduced. A facelift for the car was introduced in 2000, and the Z3 ended production in 2002 when it was replaced by the BMW Z4.

Overview

The E36/7 (roadster) Z3 went under development in 1991 under Dr. Burkhard Göschel for 38 months. The exterior was designed by Joji Nagashima of the BMW Design Team in July 1992, which was then frozen in 1993 to be developed into the E36 platform to production in September 1995. The rear semi-trailing arm suspension was used from the BMW E30, and not the E36. Design patents were filed on April 2, 1994 in Germany and in September 27, 1994 in the US.

Production for facelift Z3 models was from April 1999 as a 2000 model year. The facelift included new engines and cosmetic changes, but did not apply on Z3M models which only featured a few changes and a different engine as well. Upon release, the Z3 was not up to many buyer's expectations as the interior were not as up to standard of other BMW models, and the plastic rear window did not compare well with the glass unit found on the cheaper Mazda MX5 (Mazda Miata). The facelift included updated and higher quality materials to try and solve this issue.

Engines and Model Lineup

All 4 cylinder powered Z3's featured one exhaust pipe and a normal body kit. All 6 cylinder powered Z3's featured 2 exhaust pipes together and flared wheel arches and a different front bumper. This does not include the Z3M which has quad exhausts and not two. Bostongrün, Montrealblau, Alpinweiss, Cosmosschwarz, Atalantablau, Dunkelgrün, Arktiksilber, Hellrot, Estorilblau, Dakargelb, Titansilber, Siennarot, Topasblau, Oxfordgrün II, Sterlinggrau, Saphirschwarz, Schwarz II were colours for the Z3 Roadster and Coupe.

Roadster (September 1995-2002)

The BMW E36/7 Z3 entered production in September 1995 as a 1996 model year, with the earliest engines being the 1.8 and 1.9l engines with a 2.8l engine joining the lineup in 1996. Z3's could be ordered with a hardtop roof which would snap on to mounting points.

Coupe (1999-2002)

The BMW E36/8 Z3 entered production sometime in 1999 with its controversial shooting brake design, often being referred to by critics as the breadbox. The Coupe version however featured a chassis stiffening hatch area, and only had 2.8l, 3.0l and 3.2 (Z3M) engines available.

Designed by Joji Nagashima the Z3 was the first mass market BMW roadster for many years and also the first BMW built in the USA (Greer, South Carolina,). It had a Video and Press release in June 1995, after a prototype had been released in the January for the filming of the James Bond film Goldeneye.

In 1999 the Roadster was joined by a Coupe version.

The Z3 design was developed from the E36 platform of the 3 Series to production within 38 months. The resulting platform is sometimes referred to as the E36/7 (roadster) or E36/8 (coupé). The rear semi-trailing arm suspension from the E30 was used rather than the more sophisticated multilink suspension from the E36. At first, only the 1.9 L M44B19 straight-4 engine was offered, but its 138 hp. In 1997 a more powerful 6-cylinder engine was added. The 2.8 L engine (M52B28), similar to the BMW M52 straight-6 in the 328i except with an all aluminum block and head of 189bhp. The M Roadster appeared in 1998 with a 3.2 L S52B32 engine (North America) or more powerful 3.2 L S50B32 engine (International). In 1999, the 1.9 L 4-cylinder engine was replaced with a 2.5 L straight-6 M52TUB25, producing 170 hp.

From 1998 to 2002, the Motorsports division of BMW produced the M Roadster which included suspension upgrades and the engine from the BMW M3. The international 1998, 1999 and 2000 M roadster had the 3.2L S50 engine from the E36 M3 with quad exhausts. The North American models for this time frame had the less powerful S52 engine. The 2001 and 2002 models all had the S54 engine from the E46 M3. There were also interior upgrades with additional gauges in the center console, illuminated "M" shift knob, various chrome bits throughout the cockpit and sport seats as standard equipment. Exterior changes were larger wheels spaced further apart and more aggressive fenders than were installed on the regular Z3. Hardtops were available as an option. The BMW M Coupé and M Roadster were succeeded by the BMW Z4 M.

Designed in house by Joji Nagashima of the BMW design team and developed on the E36 platform. With the rear semi trailing arm suspension of the E30 rather than the more sophisticated multi-link E36 suspension. Originally launched with a 1.9 litre S4 138bhp engine.

In 1997 the more powerful 2.8 litre S6 engine simular to the one used in the BMW 328i except with an all aluminum block and head, was also offered.

A high performance M Roadster with a 3201cc engine was launched in 1998 and Coupe versions were offered from 1999. The Roadster was available with a removable factory hard top as an option.

The Z3 was given a mild facelift for the 1999 model year the Z3 2.0 model was replaced by the Z3 2.2i and the Z3 2.8 model was replaced by the Z3 3.0i, as the inline-six engines were upgraded from the M52 to the M54. Introduced in 1995 the E39 5 series was the successor to the E34. Sales to Germany and most of Western Europe began in 1995, and by 1996 sales to the rest of the world. Designed by Joji Nagashima the first pilot models were built in early 1989 with the final design selected in 1991.

The complete vehicle redesign draws heavily from the E38 7 Series in body construction and electronic technology. The mid-level BMW saloon showed evolutionary styling changes rather than a dramatic redesign. Initially offered only as a saloon, the wheelbase grew by 68 millimetres and overall length by 55 millimetres over the E34.

The E39 all-steel body acts as a safety cage for occupant protection. The structural rigidity of the monocoque was increased using computer-aided engineering. This allows key points to be reinforced, to increase rigidity, without significantly adding to the weight. The overall increase is 10 kilograms which is offset by the aluminium suspension. The aerodynamic body design resulted in a drag coefficient ranging between 0.28 and 0.31

The model was given a mild facelift and revision from September 2000. New 520i, 525i and 530i models (using M54 engines) replace the 523i and 528i model (M52TU engines). The kidney grilles on all models were changed to those of the M5 and the headlights were revised to angel eye headlights

(Of course, I wasn't literally locked in a room, though at times, it has indeed felt like it, through my long recovery from ankle surgery. Happy to report the start of physical therapy -- & now up to 35% weight bearing on injured ankle. I might finish the shawl, though, before I'm really walking.)

BMW 3 Series (E36)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The BMW E36 is a compact executive car which was produced by BMW from 1990 to 1999.

It was introduced in October 1990 in the 4-door sedan body style.

The model range was later expanded to include the coupe, convertible, station wagon ("Touring") and hatchback ("Compact").

The BMW E46 replaced the E36 sedans in 1998, however the E36 coupe and station wagon models remained in production until 1999, the convertible models remained in production until 2000 and the hatchback models remained in production until 2001.

The hatchback body style, known as the BMW Compact, was introduced in 1994 starting with the 318ti, being very popular in Europe but largely unsuccessful in North America.

The "Touring" estate was sold in Europe from 1995, but was not available in the United States.

Even though the BMW factory was producing its own E36 convertibles, the Baur "Top Cabriolet" conversion was also available.

The E36 was a successful model which laid strong foundations for the BMW E46's success in subsequent years.

For every year of its production, the E36 was named in Car and Driver Magazine's "10 Best Cars" list (see Car and Driver Ten Best). Additionally, the E36 M3 was named Car and Driver's best handling car for over $30k in 1997."
