Hilltop Hideaway Cabin. Umatilla National Forest, Oregon.

While driving into the mountains the engine on my Jeep Patriot spontaneously combusted. It only took a few minutes for the entire vehicle to go up in flames. I was very concerned about it starting a forest fire since everything is so dry. But thankfully firefighters and bystanders limited the fire to a small area of grass.

Back at home, Oregon gets hit with a major wind event on September 7, which sparks fires all over the state. The closest fire to our house is in the small town of Mulino. Nine miles away and zero percent contained. Time to start packing.

Leaving the Jeep behind at the trailhead for a five night stay at the lookout. We use a deer-cart for hauling most of our stuff. The trip is short enough to return to the car and restock.

Six nights to go at Owl Creek Cabin. A U.S. Forest Service rental in Flathead National Forest, Montana.

Constructed in the early 1920s, Old Condon Ranger Station was once a year-round forest service administrative site. Now it's a popular forest service rental in Flathead National Forest, Montana for year-round travelers. The cabin has four floors, including the attic and basement, and can sleep around ten people. The three bedrooms upstairs have two bunkbeds, one twin bed and one queen size bed. It also has a fold down futon downstairs and a indoor bathroom with a flush toilet. This is one of the few forest service rentals that feature electricity plus hot and cold potable water year round. Also on the site are two original barns and a large open garage. Many trails can be accessed from the site and, in winter, the Old Condon Loop Road turns into a cross country ski trail. Currently the rental fee is $65 a night, but it's due to increase to $85 in 2018.

Fremont Point Cabin is located on the edge of Winter Rim overlooking Summer Lake in south central Oregon. This newly constructed cabin, which was completed in the summer of 2015, sits on the same footprint as its predecessor, which burned up in a forest fire in 2002. It has room to sleep four people and comes with a cook stove, refrigerator and lights, all powered by propane. But the best part is the view. The rental fee is $40 a night.

Post Creek Guard Station was originally built to be a fire lookout cabin back in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Now it can be rented by the general public for $75 a night. Once you get to Post Creek Guard Station you'll see why it's called a lookout cabin. The site is located on a remote ridgeline above Beegum Gorge and the back room offers a 270 degree bank of windows that face a vast panorama of forest and mountains. Beegum Creek, a major waterway in this area, is to the north and the Yolla Bolla Mountains and Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness are to the south. The cabin has no electricity, water, heat or any appliances.

The city of Toronto is struggling to keep up with all the potholes on our streets this year. Our highways are worse than an off road trail! This city of Toronto truck got stuck in a sink hole while fixing all the potholes. How ironic!

All aboard for a road trip into unknown territory. Woody blasts off to Fall River Guard Station in Oregon, his first long distance trip away from home. Woody is six months old now and the heart shaped mark is still on his face. In fact, his whole head is heart shaped.

The Walker Cabin is a forest service rental near Elk City, Idaho. It has no electricity, lights or running water. It does, however have two wood stoves. One can be used as a baking and cooking oven, as well as a heat source. Firewood is provided by the Elk City Ranger District, for the wood stoves, that is. If you want a campfire like this one you have to collect it yourself. The rental fee is just $20 a night, but due to go up to $40 in 2015.

Nez Perce National Forest, Idaho. December, 2014.

We visited the Trinity Warming Hut before leaving early in the morning. It's located just outside the Trinity Recreation Area and near the Anderson Ranch Reservoir in southwest Idaho. The warming hut and the area around it offer more that 380 miles of well-marked, groomed trails during the winter months. The base elevation is 4,200 feet and climbs up to nearly 10,000 feet in the Trinity Mountains.
