Gudhi Padwa (Marathi: गुढी पाडवा IAST: Guḍhī Pāḍavā) and Konkani: संवसार पाडवो,Sanvsār Pādvo) is a spring-time festival that marks the traditional new year for Marathi and Konkani Hindus.[3] It is celebrated in and near Maharashtra and Goa on the first day of the Chaitra month to mark the beginning of the New year according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar. The word पाडवा (pāḍavā) or पाडवो (pāḍavo) or पड्ड्वा/पाड्ड्वो (pāḍḍvā/pāḍḍvo) comes from the Sanskrit word प्रतिपदा (pratipadā), which refers to the first day of a lunar fortnight. The festival is observed with colorful floor decorations called rangoli, a special Gudhi flag (garlanded with flowers, mango and neem leaves, topped with upturned silver or copper vessel), street processions, dancing and festive foods.[3][4]

"Maharashtra Day on May 1 is celebrated in Maharashtra, a state on western coast of India. Maharashtra attained statehood on 1st of May, 1960 when the then state Bombay was divided into two states, Maharashtra and Gujarat on the basis of different languages, Marathi and Gujarati, under the Bombay re-organization act. Maharashtra retained old capital Bombay, which was later renamed Mumbai."

Bata Wada Jai Maharashtra
Batata wada is a poor mans meal and staple diet as a breakast for Maharashtrians..
Mumbai is the prestigious capital of Maharashtra.. to the west of India..
Mumbai is a coastal city.. the language is Marathi..
Marathi is a compulsory language of the educational syllabi.
English is the main language ..but the main language can be any other language too.. the school is known as vernacular school.. so it can be Marathi , Urdu or Hindi medium.
My mother tongue is Urdu.. I can only speak it.
Arabic is a must to read the Holy Koran.. but it never entered my soul as a language... when I spent two years in Muscat Oman..in the early 80s after marriage.
And I dont like to work for Arabs..who treat Indian Muslims as second class citizens..
I think the Arabs have a lot to learn from us about hospitality and upkeeping the faith..
Saudi Arabia should hand over the upkeep of the holy cities to some more professional management authority..or pehaphs to India or Iran..
I prefer French..but I am rusty in the vocabulary.
Jesuit run schools are called convent oriented schools, at the Bandra Kurla Complex is the American School.. very expensive.. for the elitist of the upper class..or the consular class.
I am convent educated Holy Name High School or my primary one run by English teachers all dead Private European School..in the alcove of the Weslyan John the Baptist Church..
John the Baptist Mary Magdalene both got a raw deal..biblically.
Well back to Bata wada ..it is made by crushing potatoes corriander chillies and covering the same in gram flour or Besan or Channe ka atta.. chana means gram, atta means flour.
And this is fried in a cauldron of Oil..and its eaten with Ghati red masala.
The Batata Wada I am eating is South Indian style so it has in the little plate coconut milk chutney.. and bread or pao.
And I had the same this morning too at Bandra Bazzar Road..
Near Nandi Galli at the station on SV road you get giant size Bata Wadas and my wife does not eat all this only cooked home food..she has stopped Jimmis Kitchen too.. chicken is what we are eating at home these days at Rs 15 a kg.. but the rate of cooked chiken tandoori is still the same Rs 100 for a full one in eateries and restaurants.Bird Flu .
And at Dadar a Maharashtrian locality you get some amazing Batata wadas.. huge crowds ..
My plate cost me Rs 13/
The guy across my shop charges Rs 5 / with pao.
I used the spoon to light the bata wada from the side..I took aim and shot.
Culinary pictorial curiosity...rembrandt lighting..ha ha ha..
If you Dogpile search Orkut you will be transported to Maharashtra , Mumbai Bata Wada , Shiv Sena and all.

In India, first day of the bright phase of the moon is called Gudhi Padwa in Marathi, pāḍya (Konkani: पाडयो;Kannada: ಪಾಡ್ಯ; Telugu: పాడ్యమి, paadyami; ). Konkani Hindus variously refer to the day as सौसार पाडवो or सौसार पाडयो (saṁsāra pāḍavo / saṁsāra pāḍye), संसार (saṁsāra) being a corruption of the word संवत्सर (saṁvatsara). Telugu Hindus celebrate the same occasion as Ugadi, while Konkani and Kannada Hindus in Karnataka refer to it as युगादि, ಯುಗಾದಿ (yugādi). The same new year festival is known by other names in different regions of the Indian subcontinent. However, this is not the universal new year for all Hindus. For some, such as those in and near Gujarat, the new year festivities coincide with the five day Diwali festival.[5] For many others, the new year falls on Vaisakhi between April 13 to 15, according to the solar cycle part of the Hindu lunisolar calendar, and this is by far the most popular not only among Hindus of the Indian subcontinent but also among Buddhists and Hindus in many parts of southeast Asia.[5]
Gudhi Padva signifies the arrival of spring and to the reaping of Rabi crops.[7]
The festival is linked to the mythical day on which Hindu god Brahma created time and universe. To some, it commemorates the coronation of Rama in Ayodhya after his victory over evil Ravana, or alternatively the start of Shalivahan calendar after he defeated the Huns invasion in the 1st century.[8]
According to Anne Feldhaus, in rural Maharashtra the festival is linked to Shiva's dance and coming together of the community as they carry the Gudhi Kavads together to a Shiva temple.[9]
A notable sight during Gudhi Padwa are the numerous Gudhi (or Gudhi) arrangements at every household. It is a bright colorful silk scarf-like cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo. On top of it, one or more boughs of neem leaves and mango leaves are attached along with a garland of flowers. This arrangement is capped with a silver, bronze or copper pot (handi or kalash) signifying victory or achievement.[10][11] The whole arrangement is hoisted outside each household, typically to the right, or through a window or terrace. It is visible to everybody. Villages or neighborhoods also come together and host a community Gudhi Kavad, which they carry together to the local Shiva temple. Some temples are located on the top of hills, and groups work together to help reach the kavad to the top.[11]
Some of the significances attributed to raising a Gudhi are as follows:
The Gudhi Padwa festival marks the new year, but also celebrates victory of Maratha warriors in processions.
It symbolizes the victory of King Shalivahana and was hoisted by his people when he returned to Paithan.[7]
Gudhi symbolizes the Brahmadhvaj (translation: Brahma’s flag) mentioned in the Brahma Purana, because Lord Brahma created the universe on this day. It may also represent Indradhvaj (translation: the flag of Indra).[7]
Historically, the Gudhi symbolizes Lord Rama’s victory and happiness on returning to Ayodhya after slaying Ravana. Since a symbol of victory is always held high, so is the gudhi (flag). It is believed that this festival is celebrated to commemorate the coronation of Rama post his return to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile.[7] So, people celebrated victory of lord Rama every year by raising Gudhi. Gudhi is symbol of victory of lord Rama
Gudhi is believed to ward off evil, invite prosperity and good luck into the house.[7]
The word 'Uddan pool ' is marathi translation of 'fly over'. Thaat Baat was a resaurant near this where we had one of the most delicious food of life.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj founded the Hindu kingdom in the Deccan against all odds , fighting against the mighty Mughals. He inspired and united the common man to fight against the tyranny of Mughal ruler Aurangjeb, by inculcating a sense of pride and nationality in them.
At the age of 16, he took a pledge to establish a sovereign Hindu state. He clearly outstands all the rulers and generals of India by the exemplary life he lived and is thus respected by the entire cross section of Indians. Shivaji's military skills could be compared to those of Napolean.
He raised a strong army and navy, constructed and repaired forts, used gureilla warfare tactics, developed a strong intelligence network, gave equal treatment to the people from all religions and castes based on merit, and functioned like a seasoned Statesman and General. He appointed ministers with specific functions such as Internal security, Foreign affairs, Finance, Law and Justice, Religious matters, Defence etc.
He introduced systems in revenue collection and warned the officials against harassment of subjects. He thought ahead of times and was a true visionary. In his private life, his moral virtues were exceptionally high. His thoughts and deeds were inspired by the teachings of his mother Jijabai, teacher Dadaji Konddev , great saints like Dnyaneshwar & Tukaram and the valiancy and ideals of the Lords Rama and Krishna.
The tiny kingdom established by Chhatrapati Shivaji known as "Hindavi Swaraja" (Sovereign Hindu state) grew and spread beyond Attock in Northwest India (now in Pakistan)and beyond Cuttack in East India in course of time, to become the strongest power in India. After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji & his son Sambhaji, their prime ministers or ‘the Peshwas' became the defacto rulers. The Peshwas and the Maratha Sardars (Chieftans) like Shindes of Gwalior, Gaekwads of Baroda & Holkars of Indore contributed to the growth of the Maratha Confederacy.
The history of India is incomplete without the history of Marathas and Shivaji is the nucleus of Maratha history. Shivaji has been a source of inspiration and pride to the past generations and will continue to inspire generations in future.
We salute this legend.
