Coming near the end of this snowy group of images.
A few weeks ago we got the first snow of the year in Toronto. It was the most perfect kind of snow - the kind that sits on the trees like icing sugar. Because the snow came a bit early, and because our Fall was a bit late, there were still a lot of leaves on the trees and bushes. It made for some wonderfully unique and colourful winter scenes that were a lot of fun to photograph.

La prima descrizione della Croce si rinviene nel 1657, in uno scritto della badessa Angela Baitelli, che la colloca in Santa Maria in Solario, dove attualmente è ospitata, dopo la riapertura del Museo nel 1998.
La Croce, che aveva funzioni devozionali e processionali, rappresenta uno degli esemplari liturgici più rari giunti sino a noi, per la gran quantità e il pregio delle pietre decorate, sparse “a tappeto” ma simmetricamente sulla struttura portante in legno, rivestito da una lamina metallica, con i bracci dilatati alle estremità.
Elementi decorativi di età romana, longobarda e carolingia distinguono l’impianto strutturale della Croce, in cui coesistono anche le integrazioni compiute nel corso dei secoli: talmente ricche sono le decorazioni racchiuse nel manufatto da far pensare che si trattasse di materiali provenienti da un tesoro regio, donati in età altomedievale, e da alimentare la leggenda della Croce quale dono di Galla Placidia, e successivamente di Desiderio, fondatore del monastero.
Desiderius’ Cross is a processional cross that used to be carried on a tall staff by hand or on carriages. Considered its use, it was built in wood and covered with golden metal plates. Tradition recounts that it was a gift to San Salvatore and Santa Giulia monastery from the Longobard king Desiderius, who founded it between 753 and 760 together with his wife Ansa.
Among the examples of crux gemmata survived to the present day, this is the largest and it is covered with 211 gemstones set on the four arms. As unique case for this type of decoration, the goldsmiths here reused numerous ancient gems – about 50 – many of which came from other decorative pieces.
Where the arms cross there are two large medallions: the front shows the embossed figure of Christ Enthroned, possibly a 9th-10th century work, surrounded by four miniatures (10th-16th centuries AD). On the reverse side there is the figure of Christ Crucified added during the 16th century. The stones from the Imperial and Late Antiquity ages can be found especially on the reverse of the cross and their large number witnesses the remarkable availability of high quality material possibly derived from ancient imperial treasures.

Artista muy polifacético que ha experimentado también con el dibujo, escenarios para ópera, videoproyecciones o instalaciones acústicas. Es conocido por sus grandes esculturas formadas por letras y números.
Nacido en Barcelona en 1955, estudió en la Escuela Llotja y en la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi.

Built in 1944, this Spitfire served with 312 (Czech) Squadron and is seen here in painted in authentic RAF markings which it wore on D-Day when flown by P/O Miroslav Liskutin DFC. After WWII it served with the Royal Netherlands Air Force and then the Belgian Air Force. Following retirement, it spent time as gate guardian at Saffraenberg, Belgium and later moved to the Musee Royal de l'Armee, Brussels. The aircraft passed between various private owners in the 1980s-90s, moving to the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, Biggin Hill for restoration to airworthiness from where it flew again in 2000. Following a forced landing in August 2015, the aircraft again underwent a second restoration culminating a post-restoration flight in July 2024 from Biggin Hill.

Pope Pius IX; born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti; 13 May 1792 – 7 February 1878) was head of the Catholic Church from 1846 to 1878, the longest verified papal reign. He was notable for convoking the First Vatican Council in 1868 and for permanently losing control of the Papal States in 1870 to the Kingdom of Italy. Thereafter, he refused to leave Vatican City, declaring himself a "prisoner of the Vatican".
At the time of his election, he was seen as a champion of liberalism and reform, but the Revolutions of 1848 decisively reversed his policies. Upon the assassination of his Prime Minister Rossi, Pius escaped Rome and excommunicated all participants in the short-lived Roman Republic. After its suppression by the French army and his return in 1850, his policies and doctrinal pronouncements became increasingly conservative, seeking to stem the revolutionary tide.
In his 1849 encyclical Ubi primum, he emphasized Mary's role in salvation. In 1854, he promulgated the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, articulating a long-held Catholic belief that Mary, the Mother of God, was conceived without original sin. [Wikipedia]

The Colorado High-resolution Echelle Stellar Spectrograph, or CHESS 4, was successfully launched on a NASA Black Brant IX sounding rocket at 12:47 p.m. EDT, April 16 (4:47 a.m. local, April 17) from the Kwajalein Atoll in The Republic of the Marshall Islands.Â
The CHESS 4 mission will study the interstellar medium, the matter between stars. The mission focuses on translucent clouds of gas, that provide the fundamental building blocks for stars and planets. These clouds have very low densities and the only way to study them is to measure how a cloud is affected by a star -- and its associated outpouring of stellar material, the stellar wind -- moving through it.
