This is the oldest recorded standing Ivatan house in Batanes province. Nanay is 86 years old and she says that the original house was built around 1890s. An earthquake destroyed that house and this one was rebuilt in 1910. She is a retired school teacher and has been featured in national dailies and magazines countless times. I was lucky I got her to laugh.

The town of Savidug, in Sabtang Island, Batanes has one of the best preserved traditional Ivatan houses anywhere in the province. Almost all houses still use the cogon grass as roofing.

We were walking around Chavayan in Sabtang (Batanes) when I saw this, and immediately I started singing "Stuck in the middle with you" in my head. It looks like a part of a jeepney but I have no idea why it's stuck in the door of an Ivatan house.

Limestones that is...

Batanes, being closer to Taiwan than mainland Luzon, has different flora compared to the rest of the Philippines, considering the extreme weather and generally cool climate they experience. I love the pink and green together in this picture, together with the Ivatan house almost hidden in the background.

The tourist jeeps are comparably slow, but they go past houses very quickly and I had to keep my eyes peeled or else I could miss out on scenes like this. I was lucky we were on a jeep with a family of four that was very supportive of my taking pictures, and I went down the jeep for two seconds to take this picture!

This was shot at the end of the UNESCO-nominated World Heritage Site Chavayan town's main road. I love this flower-bearing tree, which is endemic to Batanes, and how its softness contrasts with the hardness of the native Ivatan stone houses.

i hate it, it's blurry. :(
