Harvest Moon revealing itself over the mountains overlooking Lake Okanagan. Press L for full page.

This is a composite of two shots: I superimposed the background night sky as a second shot since at 1/320 the background surrounding the moon was dead black as shown in the tree line. The moon and tree line portion of the shot is pretty much as taken.

I take this shot once a year as the Harvest Moon comes up over the lake directly in front of us so I can set tripod up on my balcony for the event. With the mountains only about 20km away and the moon 340,400 km away, the magnification of the moon by the 600mm against the closer tree line is amplified in what seems like an unnatural size difference.

‘Puddling’ is one of the type of descriptors that uses the name of a typical place where an activity occurs to describe the activity itself. In fact, ‘puddling’ is the way butterflies (or at least certain species of butterfly) extract minerals needed for many things, especially reproduction. As many of us know, sugar water is a great way to get by, but more complex nutrients are needed if we want to do anything more complex.

The nutrients extracted from whatever the butterfly finds as its source (manure, dead animal carcasses, puddles) are passed on in the reproductive process to help build healthy young. In this case, a White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis - the subspecies in my area is arthemis again, hence the double naming) uses minerals along the side of a country road. It had rained, but in some cases the butterfly can spit up to help facilitate the extraction.

This was taken on a very remote country road during a walk to look at wildflowers and insects, camera in hand. I did have to lie down on the shoulder to get this perspective, but I was not alone and had a person watching for cars (there were none) and it was along a straight patch with high visibility.

Along the Trans-Canada Highway, between Calgary and Canmore, the world revealed itself in strata of texture, tone, and colour.

This 4 week old Great Horned Owl was photographed in Lancaster County PA, USA

With its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow-eyed stare, and deep hooting voice, the Great Horned Owl is the quintessential owl of storybooks. This powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs. It’s one of the most common owls in North America, equally at home in deserts, wetlands, forests, grasslands, backyards, cities, and almost any other semi-open habitat between the Arctic and the tropics.

A museum in and of itself, aircraft carrier Intrepid was used during World War II and the Vietnam war. It houses many aircraft used during these periods.

Also on display (located in an exposition built on top of the flight deck) is Space Shuttle Enterprise, first of its kind and one of four that still exist, that acted as a prototype for the shuttles that did actually perform missions in space.

Other interesting vehicles include a Concorde, an A-12 Blackbird (which you can see on the upper right of the ship) and of course guided missile submarine Growler, which you can actually enter to look around!

Very much worth the visit, on the west side of Manhattan, NYC.

A green heron (Butorides virescens) in a shallow lake water as it grooms itself. Austin, Texas, USA.

An intriguing view using a work of art as a leverage for beauty, both the monument and the City itself.

Harris is the southern and more mountainous part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Although not an island itself, Harris is often referred to in opposition to the Isle of Lewis as the Isle of Harris. We drove a bit of the narrow twisting road through the mountainous part of Harris that includes the highest summit in the Western Isles.

I had earlier seen this female Hooded Merganser by itself on this log, quite comfortable (in my interpretation) even when a Northern Shoveler pair swam by. But five minutes later, this male Mallard barged in to usurp its place. The location was Alta Lake near Whistler, in the mountains north of Vancouver, British Columbia. Photo 1/4

What could I say ? The landscape speaks for itself. When crowds are stacked in Zadar or Split, this place is almost empty. a some people in the port, hike 30min and you'll be on your own. Sounds like the older I get the less I understand people.

Anyway, you want Etretat, Moher ? I rise you Telasica Nature Park.

Featuring crystal clear water, salted water lake and sea urchins. A freaking lot of sea urchins.

I do believe when you adhere to the truth of Yahusha, many will deslike you, the system itself will.

As to this flickr, before I came back to Jesus a decade ago, I used to have hundreds, even to a thousand views a day. I started in 2006 what can you say. I'm more than a decade in flickr.

But when I started making mention my faith in Christ, it all went down to just a handful. My photos not even reaching the Explore ever since, though it used to be.

The system alone perhaps the invisible flickr 'fact checkers' and some algorithms put into the system do monitor each flickr costumers, if there's any of such in your stream, you'll likely go down or they fiddle the views, which is similar to YT and other sites.

It's just the system, the whole system ... I'm also talking about the world system is working for the enemy of God or belongs to the enemy of God. There's great hate of this world to Elohim, the Yahuah God when you are on His side or is returning back to Him.

People who are returning to faith should realize, it will play tough with you especially in the coming time accelerating to the persecutions.

It will get worse before it gets better. But rest assured when you're restored to faith in Yahusha, and follow Him, you are saved. No one can take you out from His love grace.

Our faith didn't come because we were told or influence by the traditional or cultural Christianity.

We are all convicted and chosen by God Elohim through His spirit to see and choose this path through His Holy Spirit, who will attest we are of Him.

My faith didn't come because my parents were Christians, my true faith is when God opened my eyes to see, and experience it myself that He is the true God by many events and circumstances that demonstrate He is real and He's son is coming.

If you are one of us, you'll understand what I'm talking about truly to the dot.

May Yahuah God bless you and preserve / protect you in these dark times we'll be going through.

Put your trust to His son Yahusha Ha'Maschiach and always, He is our way out and shield.

The information center of this year is an artwork itself. Located between land and water. A connection between the Water Colors boat tour and Illuminade walk tour. Seen from another angle here.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter. The artworks are placed alongside two routes. Each route has their own theme, set of artworks and visitor experience. Water Colors, the boat rout, displays big monumental objects and offers visitors the chance to experience the art from a water perspective. Illuminade, the walking route, shows interactive and innovative installations from upcoming designers in the Plantage neighborhood.

Celebrate winter, with art, light and water!

EYE_BEACON

Artist: UNStudio - Architect bureau

Location: Amstel | Waterlooplein

This artwork is located on a bridge but is inspired by what happens in water, in the deep dark waters of the sea to be exact. Organisms live in darkness and have to create and emit their own light there. This mechanism is known as bioluminescence and is used communicate with other organism or to attracts similar species or prey.

Eye_Beacon from UNStudio consists out of two connected cubes that are arched with each other with a custom made a stretchable fabric. Through LED projections the colors of the artwork change constantly.

Eye_Beacon is also as the central information booth of the festival and the artwork that connects the Water Colors boat rout to the Illuminade walking route.

UNStudio is an architect bureau that was founded by the renowned architects Ben van Berkel and his wife Caroline Bos. Before this the company was called Berkel & Bos Architectenbureau. Did you know that UN stands for ‘United Network’? The bureau exists of a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure. You probably know them from the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Corno del Renon prides itself with the prettiest 360° view in South Tyrol - and rightly so! “For who wishes to see all of Tyrol at one sight shall climb these heights”, thus wrote Ludwig Purtscheller, mountaineer of the later 19th century, about Rittner Horn/Corno del Renon. And, if you’ve ever experienced the vastness that opens in front of you up there, if you’ve ever felt that rush of goosebumps at the sight of so much unfiltered beauty, you will surely agree with Purtscheller: The view at the top here reaches 360° to the horizon and back - absolutely open, clear and unobstructed. The onlooker’s eyes roam from the Dolomites - UNESCO World Heritage Site – spreading in one arch from southeast to south, over the summits of Peitlerkofel/Sass de Putia to the Geißlerspitzen/Gruppo delle Odle peaks, to Schlern/Sciliar and further on over Rosengarten/Catinaccio to Latemar all the way to Schwarzhorn/Corno Nero and Weißhorn/Corno Bianco.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

The evil fairy Maleficent transforms into a wicked dragon as she displays her fullest dark power--that of Hell itself!

I have to say, I love that Lego has started making Disney figures and sets! It brings back tons of VHS memories for me, so when it came time for Lego to finally release the first Disney CMF wave a few months ago--I was well prepared.

I had built this at the start of the year as a late addition to my Brickworld Chicago 2016 showing, and then waited eagerly for the release of the Maleficent figure. Luckily I secured one about a month or so before Brickworld, otherwise this build would have been a mess! This was the only vignette I brought to BW, and incidentally, it also happened to win Best Vignette; a category I've been trying to take the gold in for years. And yes, I am still incredibly bitter about last years' failure by the way. It's a tough category. Although to be honest this juicy victory has gone over my head, as the build itself was such a small fraction of what I brought with me.

I had, and I suppose still do, intend this to be the first in a line of Disney Villain Vignettes...granted it'll be a rather slow roll out considering the limited villain selection at the moment. So this vig will live on for now, as the collection grows.

But for now, it's time to continue destroying my Bat-collection and start rebuilding for next year. I've got my layout theme set, and I'm super excited to jump into unexpected territory.

----

Fun Build Facts:

--Maleficent is wearing four cape pieces and Man-Bat arms to help sell the transformation affect.

--There are somewhere around 500 tooth pieces (small & medium) used to create the wall of thorns.

--To form its shape, the neck of the dragon utilizes a flex tube with an inserted flattened out paper clip. This allows it to be bent into positions without moving back. Tip I picked up on MOCpages many years ago.

--This build is again an instance where I continue to use Lego Dark Purple after completely swearing off the accursed color.

Wildlife photography. A world in itself almost as alien to many of us as it must be to those who think a camera is an app on their mobile phone. It seems as far removed from landscape photography as Rugby Union is from Rugby League or Road Cycling from Mountain Biking. You can see the parallels, but apart from having a bag full of shiny camera gear, only the likes of us really understand that there are a million differences. Lenses the size of rocket launchers, wildly different settings, fierce blue skies, a wardrobe full of so much khaki and camouflage that only the owner can find it, and bags of patience spring to mind. Certain cameras are designed for wildlife photography too, so I’m led to believe. And even though I’ve been retired for more than three years and have as much time as I need, sitting in a hide waiting for a lesser tailed peewit to sit on the branch that I’ve sellotaped some peanuts to over there - well I just can’t be bothered really. I love watching wildlife, and I do take a very occasional snap, but it’s not for me. I pointed the telephoto lens at an Egyptian Vulture flying over the mountains in Fuerteventura earlier this year and it came out pretty well. Won’t be appearing here though. Even at four hundred millimetres I had to crop it to animal kingdom come before I could see what I’d taken a photo of. I’m going to leave that stuff to the specialists. I need time if I’m going to get the shot I’m after. And more often than not, when that unexpected moment does arise, the wrong settings are inevitably dialled in, with an ND filter in place to slow everything down, just when the opposite is required. I’m supposed to be able to customise my camera for a rapid response, but I’ve never sat down to work out how to do so, which tells you how high on my list of priorities it is. And I'm nearly always waiting for low light before the camera comes out, which isn't exactly ideal for grabbing those tack sharp long range shots taken with the shutter speed set to one four thousandth is it?

What I do sometimes find quite engaging is what one of my Flickr friends once referred to as the “Animate Landscape.” It’s not an attempt to combine the two disciplines, and it’s not a halfway house either, but it often happens at the coast when the seabirds are gathered in numbers. Like here, just as I was leaving Crosby Beach, very much a long exposure type of landscape and seascape location, thinking about lunch and whether the rain might ease again in this lifetime. At the edge of the water, a large congregation of birds filled the space around the statues, prospecting for invertebrates hidden in the sand. As I turned to watch the sea one last time, groups of them began to fly northwards along the beach. Well at least I had the long lens on and I’d already put the filter pouch away, even if conditions weren’t entirely optimal for this kind of business. With little time to decide whether to hand hold or pop it on the tripod, and without even really thinking about the settings, I rattled off a few shots in the face of the strong winds that had made the last hour here such a challenge. But what was I focussing on? I really had no idea, and neither did the camera. Even at this range, the big focal length wasn’t going to get everything sharp. All but one of the results were a mish mash of different elements in focus at best, in some the entire image was a blur of confusion.

But there was one image which captured the mood of that wet grey afternoon as far as I was concerned, and enough of the constituent parts were passing the sharpness test for me. Across the water lay the hazy outline of New Brighton, and in between the blurred foreground birds stood those enigmatic Gormley clones, forever gazing towards the west, as a flock of feathered arrows took flight across the scene. Hardly the most technically competent photograph you’ll ever see, but one that describes the animate landscape in front of the camera.

As for the birds? Well done if you got there already because I wasn't sure. As far as I could tell they had the wrong markings for Snipe and the wrong shaped beaks for Curlews, so I invited the birders on the family WhatsApp to dispel the confusion, to be informed I'd taken a picture of a flock of Knot. You learn something every day.

Living on in service on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, an old BNSF GP30 suns itself at their Bryson City, NC facilities on a nice spring morning in Carolina. With state pressure to resume local freight rail service on this portion of Southern's old Murphy Branch, maybe the old geep will find itself hauling freight as well as passengers in the near future.

The autumn also invites you to hike without any sun and presents itself very authentic.

A cute marmot suns itself on a rock.

Whistler Mountain, BC, September 2022

Mount Kailash itself is known in the Tibetan language as Gang Ti-se and informally as Gang Rinpoche ("Precious Snow Mountain"), to the Bon as Yungdrung Gutsek ("Nine stacked Svastikas"). Though only 6714 m high, it stands quite alone like a great white sentinel guarding the main routes into Tibet from India and Nepal in the south and west.

Traditionally a pilgrim undertakes the 52-km trekking cirquit or circumambulation (khorlam) around Mount Kailash commencing at Darchen (4575 m) and crossing the 5630 m Dolma La pass on the second day of the three-day walk. This is followed by a trek of the same duration around the beautiful turquiose Lake Manasarovar known in the Tibetan language as Mapham Yutso མ་ཕམ་གཡུ་མཚོ།
