Abandoned Ithaca Guns factory, Gun Hill, Ithaca, NY.

Whilst I was walking around taking photos of the exterior, some guy came up to me and asked what the city's plan for the place was. I had no idea so I looked it up when I came back.

The Ithaca Gun Company was a major industrial venture in Tompkins County during the first and second World Wars. The factory, which was constructed in 1880 near the Ithaca Falls section of Fall Creek, closed its doors for good in 1986 when the Ithaca Gun Company moved to a new location in Kings Ferry, N.Y. It is now owned by a limited liability company which had planned to restore it for business purposes.

The building is both structurally and chemically hazardous, with high concentrations of contaminants including lead, asbestos and arsenic. An application in 2006 by the Ithaca Common Council for funding from the Restore New York Program to remove the hazardous material and redevelop the land had been denied. The future of the factory and land remains uncertain, but it has been reported that the City of Ithaca will continue to pursue other funding options for the cleanup project.

I walked up and down Gun Hill looking for a way to get inside, but the whole area is behind secured fencing following a fire last summer. I guess I could have climbed in through a drainage round the back, but nobody knew where I was and it just didn't seem worth the risk. It is probably a good thing I didn't go inside, as no doubt I would have brought back contaminants from the soil and grounds.

Car headlights down Linden on April 23rd. Guess it's winter now, given that we didn't have winter from November-February. The weather machine knows Cornell Days are over.
