At the initial meeting of the "Group of 20" -- the editors, advisory committee, and steering committee -- in early May 2006, this was how the group saw the issues that cut across all six volumes.
Poverty is an issue that has always surrounded people, but many are so used to it that nothing is being done. Ecuador, my hometown, is a third-world country with one of the most serious rates of poverty in Latin America. The percentage of poverty in the country-side of Ecuador is about 62%, and extreme poverty is about 27%; which means that there are many people in need of help. Personally, I always try to contribute in every way I can. During the past two years I have been lucky enough to do some community service with some really charming but low class kids, and this has made me feel more attached to this situation. What makes me sad the most are the many kids that are laying on the streets, just waiting for help. In the U.S., people does not see poverty as a really close issue because it is not in the streets to hit you in the face, that is why when I go to Ecuador, the image in the streets keeps impressing me. Children knocking on your car windows asking for money so they can eat, others just smiling at you across the street, and many just looking down with not a bit of hope left.

Lao Wang is a homeless. He sells “the big issue”magazine on the street. TBI can’t be bought at bookstore but from homeless people.TBI exists to offer homeless and vulnerably housed people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income.
The western end of Hungerford Bridge, south side. This fella is always on this pitch selling the Big Issue. He always says hello with a smile and I reciprocate but I don't buy a copy. Nothing against him; I have found that when I buy the Issue I rarely get around to reading it. Perhaps one day when I have a few minutes in hand I'll stop and chat and find out more about him and maybe even take a copy.

My doctor is away so I am stuck at full dose of Paxil and full dose of Wellbutrin. On the good side I am not even close to depressed. I have had a lot of reasons to be less than happy this week and I havent even had anything close to a "down" day. On the bad side I am walking around in a bit of a chemical fog and constantly forgetting things. I have to work hard to focus on tasks. For my friends who know me, I am even more scattered than normal!
I managed to be scattered enough to miss a mandatory action at school. We are big on mandatory things so I had to report for corrective counseling. As a result I had to explain to my Senior and a peer about my treatment and some of the reasons for the treatment. It was very hard to do. I am still not comfortable with needing treatment let alone getting it. I have not shaken the feeling that I am "broken" and admitting that I am to a professional peer was very hard. I could see the pity and disgust in their eyes. "Be a man and self medicate like the rest of us."

Studies show that 27 percent of college student experience some type of mental health problem within their first year of college. The transition from being a high school student to a college student can be very overwhelming. It can also trigger previously undetected mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorder, etc. A recent survey found that 80 percent report feeling stress frequently and 13 percent have been diagnosed with a mental illness.
