Fu Cristoforo Colombo a trasportare in Spagna alcuni esemplari di peperoncino al ritorno da un suo viaggio intorno al 1493 e li chiamò "pimentos" in quanto riteneva che, per la loro piccantezza, potessero essere un sostituto del pepe (pimiento in spagnolo), spezia allora assai costosa e di difficile coltivazione .
Quando il peperoncino giunse in Spagna fu accolto con piacere dai regnanti, che pensavano di avere tra le mani un ricco tesoro. Tuttavia le aspettative di guadagno da parte del regno di Spagna si rilevarono deludenti poiché il peperoncino si acclimatò benissimo nel vecchio continente consentendone la coltivazione anche a quella parte della popolazione che non poteva permettersi l'acquisto delle costose spezie orientali.

Cala Junco is located in the southernmost part of the island and is considered the most beautiful and evocative inlet in all of Panarea. It is located on the right of the promontory of Capo Milazzese, of which in ancient times it was a natural port.
It is a natural swimming pool formed by high basalt rocks, characterized by a transparent sea with colors ranging from green to turquoise, particularly clear thanks to the stony seabed.
What you see in front is the island of Salina, with Lipari behind it, and Filicudi furthermost.
Cala Junco si trova nella parte più meridionale dell'isola ed è considerata l'insenatura più bella e suggestiva di tutta Panarea. Si trova sulla destra del promontorio di Capo Milazzese, di cui anticamente era porto naturale.
Si tratta di una piscina naturale formata da alti scogli di basalto, caratterizzata da un mare trasparente con colori che vanno dal verde al turchese, particolarmente limpido grazie a fondali sassosi.
Quella che si vede difronte e' l'isola di Salina, con alle spalle Lipari, piu' in fondo Filicudi.

Stromboli (Strònguli in siciliano) è un'isola dell'Italia appartenente all'arcipelago delle isole Eolie, in Sicilia. Si tratta di un vulcano attivo facente parte dell'Arco Eoliano. Posta nel bacino Tirreno del mare Mediterraneo occidentale, l'isola è la più settentrionale delle Eolie e si estende su una superficie di 12,2 km².
L'edificio vulcanico è alto 926 m s.l.m. e raggiunge una profondità compresa tra 1300 m e 2400 m al di sotto del livello del mare. Stromboli ha una persistente attività esplosiva ed è uno dei vulcani più attivi del mondo.

Strombolicchio (dal siciliano, piccola Stromboli) è una piccola isola vulcanica delle Isole Eolie. Ha un'estensione di appena 3000 metri quadri ed è posta a circa un chilometro e mezzo (poco meno di un miglio marino a nord-est di Stromboli.
Cala degli Zimmari is the only sandy beach on the island of Panarea.
The name seems to derive from the goats that the farmers of the island brought with them.
It is also called "Red Beach" due to the reddish color of its sand.
From Cala degli Zimmari it is possible to reach, through a series of steps, the promontory of Capo Milazzese where the remains of the Prehistoric Village of Panarea are located. A little further on is Cala Junco.

Cala degli Zimmari è l’unica spiaggia sabbiosa dell’isola di Panarea.
Il nome sembra derivare dalle capre che i contadini dell’isola si portavano appresso.
È chiamata anche “Spiaggia Rossa” per il colore tendente al rosso della sua sabbia.
Da Cala degli Zimmari è possibile raggiungere, attraverso una serie di gradini, il promontorio di Capo Milazzese dove si trovano i resti del Villaggio Preistorico di Panarea. Poco più avanti si trova invece Cala Junco.

do you really think I'm safe?
When all your world trembles, and an appealing series of cracks appears upon the surrounding walls of reality, and a strange dense matter starts screaming, trying to use those thin doors to flow out, all perspectives change, like in an Escher drawing. Often one climbs a mountain hopefully looking for its peak, just to realize it's unreachable, constantly obscured by sulphurous clouds.
Have you ever walked on the steep sandy slopes of an active volcano? One step ahead, two steps back, hardly fighting to conquer a reign of ominous powerfullness.
Stromboli. A living cone of black lavic materials. At first you proceed through thick stubborn bushes, then they all of a sudden surrender, leaving all the space to an awe-filled sense of respect for something you can feel, and hear. When the voice of the creature hits the ears for the first time, you stop, stirred, eyelids paralized, heart tumbling. It's the primal fear, impending, a devil's eyes you stare at in a mental temporary darkness.
Step after step its subterranean voice gets louder, and the slow ascent modifies your point of view. What just one hour before was frightening is now something charming just like a distant lover's call, whispering you an incandescent lullaby.
Gentle puffs of smoke comes out of somewhere nowhere from any place on the ground, while approaching the main craters. I smiled of the danger making holes with my naked fingers on the warm sandy path, letting the smoke blow more freely in that late september cold still air.
We chose the most promising crater, determined to spend the whole afternoon there, where the Earth was just begun. Hypnotized, both silent, the camera on the steady tripod, lulled by the miracle of Life, waiting for the next explosion - and the following noise of many falling drops of lava - like two children in awe for the most miraculous firework show ever, two kids in their raw first stage of love...

The course of life is nothing but an unstable cone, where every single day blows noisy columns of smoke outside of the years' cracks named emotions. The nice part of the story is the notable fertility of lava fields, where cellular forms are avoided for a certain amount of time, then suddenly appear like joyful tears unnoticed.
And its peak is there, for those who try. Unreachably reachable.

Panarea island village from a "secret" viewpoint with Stromboli island volcano in the distance, day and night versions, I say secret viewpoint because no one was there during my visits and when I asked the locals about a panoramic viewpoint, they kept mentioning the church terrace, which doesn't really offer a great view, I discovered it by walking up some steps that looked like private property, it probably is. Unfortunately no lava flows were visible on the volcano that evening.

Le Isole Eolie (Ìsuli Eoli in siciliano), dette anche Isole Lipari, sono un arcipelago dell'Italia appartenente all'arco Eoliano, in Sicilia.L'arcipelago, di origine vulcanica, è situato nel Mar Tirreno, a nord della costa siciliana. Comprendono due vulcani attivi, Stromboli e Vulcano, oltre a vari fenomeni di vulcanismo secondario.
