When we cast the shadow of denial on another's right to his beliefs do we not cast that same shadow upon ourselves?
This was inspired by a friend who feels the need to conceal her religious beliefs because they don't fit the norms of the religious majority, and she fears persecution and isolation from family and community.
Following a public confrontation I had with a Christian friend on Facebook I received the following private message from her. Although I share this with her permission I have made some very minor changes in wording to better protect her identity.
"Dave, I admire you for having the guts to post what you have about religion. I'm learning that it's a dangerous, hateful and spiteful world out there if you don't agree with the mainstream, of which i do not.
Almost all of my Facebook friends are Christian, some pretty extreme. Only a couple know that I'm not. I lost a good friend because while she and I were talking one day, her kids were telling my kids that their mother coached them to tell my kids that we were all going to hell, for not believing what they do. Agenda, behind my back. Ruthless, I'll say.
At any rate, I wanted to share with you my angst over not being able to be free about my beliefs and also not being able to break the ties with the people who are hardcore that I've come to love and need. I hide my beliefs from these people, some are neighbors, for fear of losing them and a decent acquaintance/ relationship over religion, which I have always felt is an individual matter. So I keep my mouth shut while they spout their beliefs.
How would they feel if I posted " You're all going die and come back again and again until you get it right if you don't post this on your wall now!" I'm a closet Universalist/New Age/Reincarnation Spiritualist. I've lost friends for it. Why can't this whole sheep gathering thing end?"
My optimism about the natural goodness of people makes me believe few people have the desire to hurt others by expressing their religious beliefs, but as can be understood through my friend's words promoting one's religion can be hurtful to people who believe differently. I'm not against anyone having a belief in any particular faith, but I would suggest before one evangelizes they consider the feelings of others. Whether intentional or not, making someone think you believe they are a bad person or will go to hell if they don't accept your faith can be a very negative thing. It can readily cause resentment and anger. Those feelings are unlikely to lead a person to accept your beliefs.

As the worst of this Winter's weather begins in Columbus, I gaze out at my truck and wonder if I have enough of what I need, should I be stuck here.
Who would have thought the campus of the University of Chicago would be so quiet on thanksgiving morning? I had to come in to work early so i figured I would make the most of it and take a few photos. It was a gloomy day, cloud-filled and cold. Walking through this quad area felt like a ghost town and i tried to process it to convey that.

The third isolation and this time a juvenile attempting to attract the females.
With wings slightly raised and heads held high, a pair of red-crowned cranes begin to march, their broad, three-toed feet puncturing the snow as they trumpet loudly and steam rises from their beaks. The male calls first, followed closely by the female—several notes in quick succession, strengthening their bond. But this vocal parade is just the prelude.
Now the pair begin to dance, bowing heads, flapping wings, leaping up and down and spinning around, sometimes picking up sticks and leaves and tossing them in the air. Their momentum triggers other couples to do the same, then the juveniles join in, until the whole flock is in motion—mesmerising flashes of red, black and white, flickering across the snowfields. It’s a sight worth going a long way to see.

An old dilapidated house? in the country... isolated from everything. The people here were very nice, waving their hands as a greeting as I pass by :-) Even the dogs around were very friendly :)
This was taken after my work. I left work (Liberty,NY) at 4pm and headed to PA (approx. 45min.) to scout the area where I will shoot for tomorrow. My subject "Barns and Farms of NY & PA".

I've been thinking a lot lately about the photographs I haven't been taking, mostly because while I've had snippets of time to think , I haven't had time to shoot. Consequently when I can snatch time away from everyday life, I feel a bit lost and rushed. I end up shooting what's grabbing me where I am at rather than the ideas I have. Anyway something gelled in my head about minimalism and landscapes that I need to start exploring. So here's a beginning...maybe.

I gave this shot this title because, I seem to get the sense of isolation whenever I see this picture.
Learning new ways to use my camera to document myself. Something I've did during my 29 months of homelessness, but I was more documenting what I was going through, situations I was dealing with and obstacles I had to get over. I wasn't really documenting me. I know that may seem crazy but I guess what I saying is, this time the camera is pointed at me. I'm pointing the camera at me.
