Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia at an altitude of 3,812 m (12,500 ft) above sea level. The surface area of the lake is 8,372 sq km (3,232 sq miles); its maximum lenght is 190 km (118 miles), its maximum widtch 80 km (50 miles). Locals claim that it is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world.

The Uros Islands are located about 5 km from Puno. They are artificial floating islands made out of totora reeds which grow in the shallow parts of the lake around Puno. The Uros are a pre-Incan people that live on forty-two self-fashioned floating island in Lake Titicaca. The Uros use bundles of dried totora reeds to make reed boats (balsas mats), and to make the islands themselves. Most of the Uros people no longer live on these islands but have moved to the mainland. The few that remain mostly entertain the flood of tourists and sell them the artifacts they produce. Many of those remaining have joined the Adventist or LDS religious communities which have taken hold on the islands.

Here, the female "inhabitants" pull off a good show for a boatload of unsuspecting tourists. They all break into song in three languages: their native Aymara (their ancestral language of Uru is extinct), Spanish, and English. The dresses are clean, tidy, and colorful--no work gets done anymore other than selling the idea (and the crafts) of island existence to a steady stream of tourists.

explaining how the floating islands are made

... a cute 15 months old Aymara kid from the floating Uros Islands, in Titicaca Lake. He is very clever: he trys to sell us every kind of small item his parents have in their island and mimics the explanations and demonstrations made by his father and the guide. Hw didn't said a word for more than half an hour though...

The "president" of the island and his wife show how the island is constructed: the island floats on top of a cushion of dense reed root materisl. On top of that is a heavy layer of freshly cut reeds which gives walking on the island a soft and sometimes squishy feel.

Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It sits 3,811 m above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America.

The Uros, an ancient lake civilization who were harassed by the Spanish to near extinction, probably fled to these islands to escape forced labor in Spanish silver mines, though they may have come here earlier to isolate themselves from the Collas or Inca.

Their way of life revolves around the tótora, or reed, which they cut and pile to form giant floating islands that are anchored to the shallow lake bottom.

The true Uros people, whom legends say were protected from cold by their thick, black blood, have long since intermingled with the Aymara, whose language they now speak. Nevertheless, the islanders preserve a way of life that is probably based on Uros traditions. They live in family units governed by a grandfather, and they prearrange marriages—sometimes right after the births of the future bride and groom. They fish, hunt birds, and move about the lake in huge tótora rafts that look almost like Viking ships with their huge dragon heads.

The Uros Islands are made of reeds which grow on the banks of Lake Titicaca. The reeds are matted down and added to as they disintegrate at the bottom. The islands float on the surface of the lake. They make their homes, furniture and boats out of the reeds. They also eat the tender bottoms of the reeds. The Uros Indians are known for their beautiful and intricate handwork, weaving, spinning, and embroidery.
