Late August, in my favourite Selfie Lift at Waterloo station. Earlier that evening a woman came up to me to tell me that my Care Bears top was the first thing that had made her smile all day. Childish style, justified :)

Volume 1 Post - Credit

A voice echoes of of the shadows, "She did exactly what she was destined to do, she has brought the Iron Fist energy here, to New York." A man walks out of the shadows, that man is Richard Wolffe, Dani's father's business partner. He strolls over to a wooden desk where another man is engulfed by darkness. "Our plan is underway."

The man sat at the desk leans forward towards Richard, and revealS himself. A smile stretches across the face of Alexander Rand. "indeed..."

Volume 1 Issue 6 - To be worthy...

According to Lei and the prophecy, an Iron Fist is a chi energy source found in the soul of an immortal being named Shou Loa. He only grants the worthy a chance to beat him in a fight for a portion of his Iron Fist energy. Millennia ago Shou Lao was allowed to roam free over these mountains, terrorising the villagers here. This was until a band of warriors fought him of and trapped him in a cave a few miles away from here. These warriors took some of his Iron Fist power leaving him weak. He is now only able to take his true form in front of those worthy. When your father came to me six years ago he wanted the power of the Iron Fist. Despite all his training I could not grant him a fight with Shou Lao as he was never worthy. He only wanted it for himself, not to help other people...." I interrupt him "my father was a good man, he ONLY wanted to help people. He was never a selfish man!!" I argue back at Lei. "Then I obviously did not know your father like you did. But he hunger for the Iron Fist can corrupt the weak, and strengthen the worthy." Lei leads Dani out of the attic and down a flight of stairs. "So when do I fight this Immortal Shou Lao?" Dani looked up at Lei, he bag an to laugh out loud until he noticed Dani was serious."oh, well it could take months, even years to prepare you for a fight with Shou Lao, let alone beat him" Lei was still smiling, but Dani looked down at her feet, almost wanting to burst into tears again. She would have to wait years before she could save her father. What happens if he's killed in that time. Lei must've noticed the sadness in Dani's eyes. "Don't worry Dani, you will see your father again, because you will beat Shou Loa in battle." Dani looked up, seeing how serious Lei's face was. "How can you be so sure?" I ask him as we approach the next flight of stairs. "Because I am going to teach you how to fight."

The next years seemed to fly before your memory's eye: Lei Kung devotes himself to you, as you devote yourself to your studies, and under the thunderers tutelage, you grow into a warrior....a living weapon.

In these past few years Dani had grown into a powerful woman, and also the cream of the warrior crop. But like most students, their teachers were never 100% impressed with them. "Harder Dani! Raise that right arm when you go for a jab! FOCUS!!" Lei's voice shook the room, Dani had found out why they called him the thunderer. "You may be one of the best warriors in this city Dani, but if you do not focus you will be hopeless in your upcoming fights!" Dani try's to find Lei's weak spot as they spar each other. She spots an opening for a right handed jab to the stomach, but as her hand reaches his stomach he parries her hand away. He then follows up with a couple of jabs to her stomach, winding her. She coughs, spitting out some flem. Then advances. This time her punches are more focused and less sloppy. "Good Dani, good focus" Lei shouts as he continues to parry away her jabs. She continues to advance on him, pushing him back until he's backed into a corner. Lei knows the only way to get out is to fight. He swings his leg, pivoting on his standing foot. His kick should've clapped into the side of Dani's face like a brick, but her lightning fast reactions catch his swinging foot. With all her strength she flips the massive body of Lei onto his back and pins him down, fists raised. "Focus Lei, you'll get yourself into trouble if you don't focus" she smiles, and he smiles back. Suddenly someone claps from the other side of the room. A man in a dark green robe is stood by the door clapping his hands. He was old, a long grey beard hung from his jaw. Lei quickly shoved Dani off him, got to his feet and bowed. "Rise master Kung." Lei lifts his head and waits for a response. "You have taught this girl well Lei, she is a formidable opponent for any man. She will be your contribution to the Contest of Champions?" Dani was about to talk but Lei raised his arm as if he were telling her not o bother. "Of course master Yu-Ti, she will be ready." They both bow to each other again and Yu-Ti looks over to Dani, "Good luck my dear, you will need it." A smile stretches across his face as he turns and leaves the training room. Lei turns to Dani. "That is master Yu-Ti, he runs this training facility, and was my old master." Lei walks over to a table to have a sip of water. "What did he mean by contest of champions Lei? You haven't told me anything about some contest?" Lei turns to her whilst sipping from his bottle. "The contest of champions is a tournament held every couple of years. Each Kung-fu master nominates their best pupil. Whoever wins is granted anything that we can provide them. I have entered you because if you win you can wish to fight Shou Lao and save your father. I entered you because you not only stand a very good chance of winning, but you are strong enough, in my opinion, to face Shou Lao." Dani's jaw dropped, "You serious?" Lei nodded whilst drinking. "So when's this tournament? Like a couple of weeks or what?" Lei sets his bottle down, "urm well that's the thing, it's tomorrow. Tomorrow at noon."

I've been trying to explain to my wife that the Power Man & Iron Fist shows are really nothing like the comics, so here are the boys in all their 1970s and 80s glory.

There's no toning it down and no apologetic tone, the bulletproof brawler and the martial arts master are hitting the mean streets of NYC.

Volume 2 – Issue 1 Exploding Back into Action Part 2

107. 107 is the number Dani has to live with for the rest of her life. That number is the deaths she could have prevented if she hadn’t of given Constrictor a chance to blow that building. He may have pulled the trigger so to speak but the blood of those 107 innocent lives were on her hands and she would never forget it…

Screams filled the air as Dani continued emerging from the smoke filled air with more bodies slung over her shoulder, lifeless and unresponsive. She had been running in and out of this building for hours, eventually being helped by the emergency services when they arrived. They hadn’t exactly been her ally over the past few years but that didn’t matter now, lives were at risk. As Dani emerged with two more casualties over her shoulder a police officer ran over and grabbed one to make it a little easier on Dani. Once the man Dani had been carrying had been sat over by the ambulances she turned towards the pile of rubble once again, but before she could leap into the debris for another scan for life, an arm extends out and grabs Dani’s wrist. “Where you off to? You can’t seriously go back in there, its suicide!” Dani turns to face the police officer that had taken one of the unconscious men off my shoulder. She was an African American police officer with overgrown hair. The police officer looked concerned for my health, but I knew I couldn’t stop, someone might still be inside that need saving. Dani shrugged the officer’s arm off hers and turned again to the debris sprinting into the entrance she was once again consumed by smoke and fire.

As I made my way up the floors, or what was left of them, I noticed no sign of life anywhere. That didn’t stop me; I need to scour every inch of this block to be anywhere near ready to leave. I make my way up to the highest level I can go. That’s when I see an arm reaching out from under some debris. I summon my inner chi energy to lift the debris off the body revealing a young adult with shattered glass all up his back. I do the same to so many others I had helped out of the building in the last hour and slung him over my shoulder and went to leave the building. As I turn movement by the stairs catches my eye. The officer who had helped me outside was dodging falling debris and flames to reach me. “What the hell are you doing in here? Do you have a death wish or something!” I belt at her, initially making the officer jump backwards, “I’m doin my job hero, just like you.” As we meet halfway up the stairs she takes one of the boys arms and I take the other, supporting him, and making it easier on the both of us. Smoke continued to pour down the hallways of the flat but they continued to push on. That was until another large explosion shook the building. Obviously the fire had found a gas source causing another shockwave to ripple through Dani’s body. Another shower of debris shot their way, bigger and way more risky this time. I go to shield the police officer and the casualty but instead I am shoved into an apartment with the casualty. I turn to see the police officer crushed by a flood of debris and I hear the deafening scream of her pierce the air before slowly dying out. Dani had just witnessed death number 108 of the day, and after that second explosion she might just round it off to 110.

Volume 1 Issue 5 - the Thunderer

Dani could see why K'un Lun was named the mystical city. The streets which she say from the top of the valley were as alive as she thought, they reminded her of the streets of her home city. Markets filled the squares, stalls popped out from every building in the narrow streets, Dani could barely see the sky. The streets cobbled making it feel like she was in Italy. Dani had only been to Italy once, and apart from the oriental style buildings this place reminded her of it. This place felt very welcoming already. Dani followed behind the guard who wouldn't stop telling her that one day he dreamed he would become one of Lei Kung's students and master the chi Kung fu he teaches. He also kept trying to calm Dani down, telling her "Lei will explain all I promise." As they worked there way further and further into the dense maze of streets, Dani realised they were heading in the direction of the large red tower that rose so high it looked like it went above the clouds. They walked up to some locked gates which entered the square in front of the tower. The guard escorting Dani went up to a guard at the gates and started speaking to him in a different language. Dani tried to listen in but it was useless. The other guard then walked over to the gate and unlocked it allowing Dani to pass. As she was about to walk through the gate she turned to the escort, "thanks for all your help. Hopefully we get to meet again." He smiled. "Sure. If you ever get a free moment I'll be at the entrance. If I'm not there just ask one of the other guards for me. The name is Shang. Shang Chi." I said thank you one more time and watched him disappear into the crowd of people. I turned around and entered the square in front of me.

The new guard welcomed me into this place and said I should go over to the bridge and wait for Lei there. He then went back to his post and locked the gates again. Dani began walking towards the bridge in the centre of the square. It was beautiful. In the centre of the square was a pool of water with golden fish swimming up and down. There were two buildings at either side of the water, a bright sky blue building and a green building, both glowed in the sunlight. As Dani approached the bridge she saw how well decorated it was. Small stone dragons guarded each end and red handrails almost danced of the bridge. She walked up and onto this wooden bridge and stopped in the middle to look down at the golden fish. She smiled as one came up to the surface and started staring at her. Dani was so content and relaxed, she almost forgot about how stressful her last couple of weeks have been. That was until a booming voice echoes around the square like thunder. "Are you Danielle?" Dani almost jumped out of her skin. "Ummm yes sir?" She whimpered. "And you think you are worthy of this prophecy, haha" his booming laugh shook the bridge Dani was stood on "you are a merely a little girl. How do you plan on getting the iron fist power huh?" Dani stepped back as this huge six foot giant stepped onto the bridge. He was massive, his grey hair slicked back over his head. He had a grey, metallic mask which covered his face making him look even scarier. He also wore a similar costume to Shang. "Umm well Mr...I mean Dr. Stephen Strange sent me. He said Lei Kung owed him a favour, and that he wished for his favour to be to train me up." Even though he wore a mask Dani could still tell he was smiling as if this were some joke. "Why would Stephen waste his favour on you. Haha. Well if that's what he wishes for then so be it. Come with me girl, we have much to discuss." He wraps his arm around my shoulder and drags me in through the doors of the large red tower. Once again Dani's body was consumed into darkness.

Volume 1 Issue 9 - Journey

Stood outside the huge wooden doors outside Shou Lao's cave, Dani couldn't help but be nervous. This was it, her destiny awaits her. But she wasn't sure she wanted it. The past few hours may have changed her mind all together. She wasn't sure she wanted to save her father anymore.

Hours had passed since Dani had refused to beat Shang to death, but she wasn't sure whether to celebrate her victory or curl up in a corner and cry. Not killing Shang meant she had defied Yu-Ti and lost her wish, meaning she could not fight Shou Lao and save her father. Dani had sat outside the hall waiting for Lei for almost two hours before he burst through the doors. "Why are you looking so glum Danielle." His smile wide. "I didn't do it. I didn't win. I let you down. I let my father down." He stopped in front of Dani. "Walk with me Dani." He stretched out his arm, she got up from her seat and followed him out of the grand hall.

Lei led me outside and up the steep slope out of K'un Lun. After about twenty minutes of agonising silence Lei finally spoke. "Listen Dani, what you did in there was something most warriors would never do. As a teacher I can't say how proud I am. I can teach you how to fight and defend yourself to the highest level, but sparing someone's life is something no teacher can teach. I have tried so many times to try and control my students, and stop them from becoming monsters so they can fulfill the prophecy, and so many times I have failed. You father was one of my failures." Dani looked towards Lei wanting to argue that my father was never a failure, but Lei stopped me. "You're father came here to be my student, to be the Iron Fist. He trained so hard, he became one of the best fighters I've ever seen. But he had a darkness in his eyes. I saw this. He was selfish and only wanted the power for himself. And when I entered him in the Contest of Champions he reached the final and murdered his opponent." Dani was shocked. She never realised her father was a killer. This news almost broke me. "This is why he was never allowed to fight Shou Lao." We both approach a pair of large wooden doors blocking an entrance to a cave. "This is the cave of Shou Lao. I spoke to Yu-Ti and he agreed, you are worthy of fighting Shou." I was shocked but shocked even more when Lei turned to leave me. "Where are you going?" I ask, he turns back to look at me. "This is your journey Dani, not mine. But promise me one thing Dani. No matter what happens in there, win or lose, promise me that you will never turn into your father, stay in the light Dani. Good luck." He turns and walks down the hill, disappearing into the distance. Dani turns towards the door. Despite Dani being unsure that she wanted to save her father she knew she had to do this not for Lei, and not even for her father, but for herself. She pushes the doors open and enters Shou Lao's cave.
