Astonishing the colors of the feathers on Green Herons....

This is a close-up HDR photo of detergent soap bubbles in a plastic tray. I took this image outside, so the larger soap bubbles are reflecting the overhead canopy of trees, and most of them are reflecting the iridescence elicited by the bright sunlight. The detail in this frame filling photo is best appreciated when seen full screen in Slideshow.

Serendipity in the sky. Unsure what the proper name for the glow in the sky is. I did not realize what I had in he image until I was inside viewing weather photos from this morning. Morgan County, Alabama - 2022

Edited to identify the sky as having Iridescent Clouds.

You will be surprised when you look at the sky and found one of this rare phenomenon in a middle of the day.

So-called "fire rainbows" are neither on fire nor are they rainbows, but they sure are stunning.

They are technically known as iridescent clouds, a relatively rare phenomenon caused by clouds of water droplets of nearly uniform size, according to a release by NASA. These clouds diffract, or bend, light in a similar manner, which separates out light into different wavelengths, or colors.

That makes them similar to rainbow-colored glories, which are also formed by diffraction, and also produce an oscillating pattern of colors ranging from blue to green to red to purple and back to blue again.

Although iridescent clouds have rainbow-like colors, the way light is scattered to produce them is slightly different. Rainbows are formed by refraction and reflection. When light is refracted, it is bent by passing through mediums of different densities, such as water or a prism.

Reflected light bounces off a surface at an angle equal to the angle it hit the surface at. Diffraction, though, involves light waves being scattered into a ring-like pattern.

As with other iridescent objects, like peacock feathers, the color changes depending upon one's position relative to the sun and the object.

The object in the photo is a detail of a decoration ribbon, which you can use for crafting (e.g. for making cards or scrap books). this ribbon has a nice iridescent pattern. I thought I could use this to make a nice abstract picture.

Can anything be anything amazingly iridescent as this butterfly! Such brilliant colors.

Envies d'ailleurs...off to an exotic place for my Flickr detox ;) See you in a bit...

I just love the colours on these beauties when they catch the sun's rays, just stunning. These were amongst many on Martin Down, Hampshire.

Up Close

Anna's Hummingbird

Henderson, Nevada

The Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) is a dazzling, jewel-like bird native to the western United States, Mexico, and parts of Canada. Known for their iridescent plumage, the males sport brilliant metallic pink or red throats, known as gorgets, which shimmer in sunlight. Their heads can also display a vibrant pink crown, while the rest of their plumage is primarily green and gray. Females and juveniles lack the vivid head coloring but still have hints of iridescence on their throats.

These birds are small, measuring about 4 inches (10 cm) long with a wingspan of 4.7 inches (12 cm), yet their energy and agility are extraordinary. Anna's Hummingbirds are famed for their high-speed flight, including acrobatic dives during courtship, where males can reach speeds of nearly 50 mph (80 km/h).

Adaptable and vocal, they emit a sharp, metallic "chip" and a high-pitched whistle. They are frequent visitors to flowers, feeders, and gardens, sipping nectar with their long, specialized beaks and tongues, while also preying on tiny insects for protein. Unlike many hummingbirds, Anna’s Hummingbirds can stay in one area year-round, even in cooler climates, thanks to their ability to enter torpor—a state similar to hibernation—on cold nights.

Beetles (Coleoptera)

Greek "koleos" (sheath) + "ptera" (wings)

I could have spent more time focus stacking and swapping sharp leg tops for slightly blurry ones. However, I decided to leave that for another day. I did not want to detain the beetle too long and a focus rail might be the answer if I want to improve on the sharp focus in all areas. A focus rail involves intention and a plan. I do yet have this but admire those who do that kind of technical excellence in a photo. For me this is a drawing reference and I have enough detail for that.

The oil slick colors shimmering off this black beetle were beautiful.

Just another unforgettable night in Iceland. The show must go on.

This time of year Starlings have their amazing metallic breeding plumage (and yellow bills). I thought I would get some shots in the garden, so put some dried mealworms down. Within minutes the Starlings had spotted them.

Our resident male Blackbird then took it upon himself to chase them away whenever possible. What seemed to work best was 2 piles of mealworms about 6 foot apart so that he couldn't chase those feeding at the same time - although he did his best! Had a couple of go's over the weekend but don't want Mr Blackbird to have a heart attack so won't repeat.

Apparently male's have a blue 'blush' at the base of the bill - with female's it is pink. So I think this one might be a female. They both have the iridescent plumage.

Though few grackles get my admiration, I must admit this one has some fine traits.

Taken for Macro Mondays Group. Topic „ Pick Two”. HMM!

This male peacock was just starting to get his spectacular plumage. It looked like iridescent tile. It's that ackward stage.

The iridescent colors are cause by different microbes living in the hot spring. Calothrix Cyanobacteria gives brown color, Phormidium creates orange color and Synechococcus creates yellow-green color. Blue color is the reflection from the sky.

Thousands of starlings still gather around the pier in murmurations before sunset. Be quick - the birds will disappear by the end of March. I will soon be focussing my attention on birding at nature reserves around Sussex, where I'll be putting my new (used) 1.4x teleconverter to good use. Thanks to Alex Witt for the recommendation!

I searched for Moorland birds, this morning. They have young now.

The superb starling (Lamprotornis superbus) is a member of the starling family of birds.

This species has a very large range and can commonly be found in East Africa.

The superb starling feeds primarily on the ground, often below, or in the vicinity of acacia trees. These birds mainly feeds on insects (grasshoppers, beetles, termites, ants and flies) and worms, but also on grains, fruits and small berries. They are gregarious and are generally rather tame and unafraid of people. Spherical nests of grasses and twigs are built in bushes, in trees of medium height and also in rock crevices. Females lay 3 - 4 eggs which are incubated for twelve days. Both the male and the female take care of the offspring.

This beautiful Superb Starling. was photographed on the shores of Lake Oloiden, Naivasha, Kenya.
