I am leaving monday for Iraq again. I have struggled with the issue of whether or not I was going to take my D200 out there or not. After much thought, not only am I taking the D200 with me, but I am going to Iraq STROBIST STYLE! I went and got a Pelican 1500 case for the camera, flash units, and "poverty wizards".
To be specific, here is what is going:
D200
17-55MM f/2.8
SB-800
Sunpak 433D (x2)
Poverty wizards (transmitter w/mod, 3 triggers)
Manfrotto tripod
El cheapo 8ft light stands (x3)
Shoot-thru umbrella (not pictured.
Umbrella mount
I am anxious to get some strobist pictures out there, and I will post as soon as I get the chance!
Iraqi militiaman at Sabaa Nissan ('the 7th of April') water treatment plant in Baghdad.
I managed to snap a couple of photos of this lovely old gentleman while I was touring Sabaa Nissan as part of the Human Shield Action to Iraq. The photo is amazingly detailed; you can see every separate hair on his face and my reflection in his bright eyes. I didn't get his name unfortunately because I couldn't speak enough Arabic and he had a quiet demeanor. I often wonder if he's still alive.

The CTS soldiers participated in Coalition-led land navigation and mortar training in order to enhance their skillset and technical proficiencies in both areas. This is probably the first and last time the Picasso sculpture in Daley plaza gets written on. Anytime after this it has been blocked off. This is one my all time favorite photos I have taken. It was right before the war with Iraq was launched and about 15,000 people showed up. This was after everyone was leaving. It almost feels like it could be from any time period. Lots of unplanned chaos coinciding. The NO WAR looks like it is floating.

Iraqi girl living next to Al Daura Oil Refinery in Baghdad pauses for a smile amongst jostling children.
I managed to snap a picture of this stunning looking Iraqi girl while I was touring Al Daura Oil Refinery as part of the Human Shield Action to Iraq. I took this photo, and many more, of the children living next to the refinery where their parents worked. They were all quite enjoying themselves and I managed to get mobbed a couple of times. I often look back on this photo and wonder if she, and her friends, are still alive. I hope to go back one day and find out.

An x-ray shows the bullet lodged between Qassim Hussein Ali's ribs, at Suleimaniyah Emergency Hospital, Sept 1, 2014. Mr Ali, 35, was wounded in Tuz Kurmatu, about 12 miles north of the besieged town of Amerli in northern Iraq.
This is a photo of a young Iraqi girl taken during a night raid in the War on Terror. The girl had been in a car with her parents when they failed to stop at a military checkpoint. Soldiers on duty fired warning shots and then opened fire on the vehicle when it it continued toward the checkpoint at high speed. Both of the girl's parents were killed. This is one of the many tragedies that come from Iraq almost daily. Over the course of almost twnety years, Iraq has been bombed, raided, burned, and searched too many times to count. American troops have had an unmistakable presence there since the Gulf War of the early 1990's and have participated in two wars. During that time hundreds of thousands of casualties have occured. Today, vast portions of Iraq have no electricity or indoor ploumbing, since bombs and raids have destroyed the city. This young girl is only one of the many children orphaned by the war. Entire families are left homeless. Schools, hospitals, and neighborhoods have been destroyed. The future for this little girl is grim, as it is for all of Iraq. Sadly, scenes like this have been a part of several conflicts that U.S. soldiers have taken part in. Civilian casualties have occured not only in the Middle East but also in Korea, Vietnam, and the Phillipines. This can have an extremely detrimental effect on a developing nation, since trauma early in life can dramatically change a person. This little girl will grow up facing the pain she experienced upon the loss of her parents, pain that will likely taint her image of the west and the world in general.

I recently bought this old 25 dinar Iraq banknote at a street market in Amman, Jordan. On the back is Al-Shaheed Monument dedicated to Iraqi soldiers who died in the Iraq-Iran War.
(Arabic: قوس النصر qaūs al-naṣr), also called the Swords of Qādisīyah، and Hands of Victory in some Western sources, are a pair of triumphal arches in central Baghdad, Iraq. Each arch consists of a pair of hands holding crossed swords. The two arches mark the two entrances to Great Celebrations square and the parade-ground constructed to commemorate then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's declaration of victory over Iran in the Iran-Iraq war (however, this never happened). The arches were opened to the public on August 8, 1989.

"They are treating human beings like Arabs here"- MK Dr. Arieh Eldad, 1 February 2006, refering to how the Israeli military evacuated an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank. A racist statement from a member of the Israeli National Union Party- a fascist party. They have about 8 seats in the Israeli Knesset (out of 120). Unrelated to the picture- but it just amazed me, that someone would say something so racist to the press. It seems there are "human beings" and then there are Arabs.
