Martha died at 5AM on 17 October 2022, her head resting on my hand. Diagnosis had been aggressive renal neoplasia leading to multiple organ failure and dystrophy. She had been in a state of slow decline for a couple years before this but I hadn't recognized the warning signs quickly enough before she crashed. As I stood alone with her remains after euthanasia, I whispered "I'm sorry" to the air, before the vet tech came back in to pack her away.
