Joi-Lynn Mondisa, Assistant Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering, sits beneath a portrait of a black female donned in a graduation gown hangs in her office in the IOE Building. The painting came from a community workshop that her and her Engineering Education cohorts attended while at a conference. It serves as a reminder of the social capital she continues to earn, even now as her cohorts are spread across the country trying to establish their own stake in the burgeoning field of engineering education at other institutions.

Red brick with liberal dressings of yellow terracotta, slate roofs. Very large irregular quadrilateral plan round a central courtyard, on triangular island site. Ebullient Edwardian Baroque style, with turrets, domes, corner tourelles, and tall south-east tower with domed belfry. Four and 3 storeys, with attics, 3:1:4:1:4:1:3 bays to London Road, symmetrical, with 4-storey 11-bay centre flanked by 3-storey 3-bay wings, banded terracotta ground floor, modillioned eaves cornice. The 4-storey main range has a giant round-headed central archway with banded surround and inner lintel lettered "FIRE AND POLICE STATION", large square windows at ground floor, coupled windows at 1st floor, a giant colonnaded screen to the 2nd and 3rd floors with coupled columns on pedestals, round-headed windows to 2nd floor and coupled windows to 3rd floor, plain frieze and moulded cornice, a balustraded parapet with central upstand lettered "ERECTED ANNO DOMINI MDCCCCV", and end turrets finished with Baroque cupolas which have life-sized terracotta statues seated at the corners. The 3-bay wings, in similar style, have (inter alia) central windows with elaborate architraves including balconies at 1st floor, a domed turret to the left and a corner tourelles to the right. The very long facades to Fairfield Street (left return) and Whitworth Street (right return) are in generally similar style (without the colonnade and cupolas), but including 4 open-pedimented bays (segmental in Whitworth Street) and with a series of round-headed arched fire-engine doorways to Fairfield Street; and the narrow west end is slightly simpler. The inner courtyard has (inter alia) iron balconies to 3 levels of the 3 main ranges (serving domestic accommodation), with standards in Art Nouveau style. An ambitious building with much good detail of the period, in unusually complete condition.

A woman helps her neighbor take down a bowl full of cocoa pods that were harvested moments earlier. She will sell the pods to Corinne Joachim-Sanon and her team. Team members will remove beans from pods on the spot and only transport the beans back to the truck and then drying facility. Corinne is here to buy beans from small scale farmers. Fresh cacao beans are actually white, they only turn dark during a fermentation process.
Corinne Joachim-Sanon had the doors open to jobs in major corporations in the United States. She did an internship at L’Oreal, worked at Accenture and had an Industrial and Operations Engineering degree from the second best program in the country (Michigan Engineering). She added to that degree MBA from the Wharton School of Business.
Ambitious, smart and focused, Corinne was set to quickly climb a corporate ladder. But the Haitian native was nagged by a different kind of ambition. She wanted to run her own business. She wanted to put her industrial engineering knowledge into practice as an entrepreneur. This New York City resident wanted to design and build a factory. A factory and a distribution network for her products. A factory that would provide well paying jobs to people in her native Haiti. Yes, Corinne wanted to make a profit as an entrepreneur, but she also wanted to help elevate the Haitian people’s economic conditions.
She and her husband invested $160,000 of their own money to start the company. They used a building owned by Corinne’s grandfather as a factory location.
Corinne did her research and decided to focus on chocolate since Haiti is known for providing specialty cacao for some of the best chocolate manufactures in the world. But rather than supplying the raw material, Corinne built the FIRST beans to bars factory in Haiti. They control the entire production and distribution process. The company Askanya gathers cacao from 3,000 farmers and distributes the chocolate bars to stores in the United States and Haiti. They have their eyes set on the likes of the Whole Foods as a future distribution network.

Students get the opportunity to learn about and then actually work with Inertia Measurement Units (IMUs) from Hannah Larson and Man I (Maggie) Wu in the ENCHANT Camp at the College of Engineering on the North Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, August 26, 2022.
The ENCHANT camp (ErgoNomiCs and Human-Automation iNteracTion) features four stations where the campers see and interact with the latest robotic/automated technology. In the camp, they use motion sensors to create images on a computer, drive an autonomous vehicle in a simulator, control a robotic arm, and learn about different types of robots in our everyday lives.
The camp is supported by Prof. Jessie Yang's CAREER grant through the NSF Human-Centered Computing (HCC) program, Prof. Leia Stirling's grants through the NSF Mind, Machine, and Motor Nexus (M3X) program, and Dr. Sheryl Ulin's outreach grant, one component of the Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering, a NIOSH sponsored Education and Research Center.

KING'S COLLEGE 1. 942 Chapel TL 4458 SE 6/267 26.4.50. I 2. The Chapel was built between 1446 and 1515, and the glass was added between 1515 and 1531. The woodwork was made between 1532 and 1575. The building is an outstanding example of the craftsmanship of the period and all the fittings are noteworthy. The fan-vault of the roof was designed and built by John Wastell, master-mason 1512-15. The timber roof was built by Martin Prentice and Richard Russel 1508-15; it is of 24 bays. The East end and altar were remodelled in the general internal restoration of 1968. There are several good C16 doors with fine locks and other iron fittings. C18 font. The windows form one of the finest and most complete sets of late medieval stained glass in Europe. The side-chapel glass is, however, mostly modern. Brass eagle lectern, early C16 with candle sconces added by Butterfield and a base by Rattee in 1854. Organ by Renee Harris, 1688. Screen of magnificent oak carving, 1533-36 with the central doors of 1636. Choir stalls of oak, 1533-6. The Chapel was paved with marble 1702 and Portland stone 1775. Monument to John Churchill, only son of Duke of Marlborough, died 1702. (RCHM).
