View On Black The sitar (Hindi: सितार, Bengali: সেতার, Urdu: ستار, Persian: سی تار ) is a plucked stringed instrument predominantly used in Hindustani classical music, where it has been ubiquitous since the Middle Ages. It derives its resonance from sympathetic strings, a long hollow neck and a gourd resonating chamber.
The instrument should be balanced between the player's left foot and right knee. The hands should move freely without having to carry any of the instrument's weight. The player plucks the string using a metallic pick or plectrum called a mezrab. The thumb should stay anchored on the top of the fretboard just above the main gourd. Generally only the index and middle fingers are used for fingering although a few players occasionally use the third. A specialized technique called "meend" involves pulling the main melody string down over the bottom portion of the sitar's curved frets, with which the sitarist can achieve a 7 semitone range of microtonal notes.
The sitar is often said to have been developed in the thirteenth century CE by Amir Khusrau from a member of the veena family of Indian musical instruments called the tritantri veena and to have been named by him after the Persian setar.[2] The sitar is, like the setar, a member of the lute family while the north Indian veena is a zither, but it shares the veena's resonating gourds and sympathetic strings. Amir Khusrau does not mention the sitar but he does mention the tanbur and, by the mid 18th century, Indian tanburs were referred to as sitars

Vellattam or Vellattu is an invocative ritual held prior to the actual Theyyam performance. The Gulikan Vellattu is held for Gulikan Theyyam, a character which represents the Hindu God of death, Yama. Through Vellattu ritual, the mortal human being is transformed into the divine self. Equivalent to the Thottam (the invocatory chant) ritual, Vellattams are more vibrant and vigorous.

Who fashioned this land of fields, fen-man
Clawed from beneath the sea’s tongue?
Who drained these lost levels, fen-man
With lock and sail and engine?
Who sweated knee-deep in the fen mud,
Exhausted by the clod weight
And the singing of the wind’s voice?
Why, you did!
But who filled your brain with peat?
Who cast the speech from your blue tongue?
And who, after stealing your five senses
Left you, wedged and breathless
Under your own sky?
Why, the land did, the land did!
by Cameron Self
I learned from going to my first karaoke recently that an all-day shape note singing is a lot like karaoke, except that at a singing everybody sings along on every song. It's more fun because you stay busy.
Today's Middle Georgia singing was pretty heavy on tunes composed by Edmund Dumas (1810-1882), because he founded and is buried at the church where it was held, and by Raymond Hamrick (1915-2014), because he lives in the memories of most of the people who were in attendance.
This sketch was penciled during Raymond's song "Invocation," ("Arise, my soul, awake, my voice, and let all tunes of pleasure sing..."), inked during the announcements, and colored later.

Squamish Nation Pow Wow 2012 at the Capilano Indian Reserve in North Vancouver was the place to be for native bands from across BC and elsewhere to congregate. They gathered to greet each other and celebrate their culture together at this annual event in the traditional territory of the Coast Salish land.
Aboriginal men and women in full regalia danced in the Grand Entry and participated in the Invocation. They also competed as individuals in different categories like in a sports event. The modern day Pow Wow is very much a family affair – in recognition of the work and contribution by the native women in the community and the role that the younger ones could play is also very much part of the agenda. The Pow Wow therefore becomes an ideal venue for the youngsters to reconnect with their culture and way of life, thus preserving the aboriginal tradition that goes back thousands of years.

Invocation Of My Demon Screen casts a cinematic spell by employing the techniques of the French filmmaker Jean Painleve. Painleve cinematically synthesized poetry and science in his surreal zoological films from the 1930s through to the 70s. Invocation Of My Demon Screen, emphasises the properties of time over the qualities of movement with a projection of the microscopic movie onto a living screen.
Produced to celebrate the 10th anniversary of SymbioticA, VISCERAL sees the world premiere of Bio-Kino’s most recent manifestation of The Living Screen project. Bio-Kino was established in 2004 as a collective of two artists (Tanya Visosevic and Guy Ben-Ary) and an optical engineer (Bruce Murphy).
Starhawk leads the SF Mission Dia de los Muertos Procession and invocations to the 5 directions
For the witches among us Halloween is not just the time for costumes and trick or treat. It's the Witches' New Year or what is called Samhain when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is like a black lace curtain. Witches gather to remember and honor their ancestors and all those who have crossed over. They mourn the losses and pain suffered by their Mother the Earth. They also celebrate the Goddess -- life's sacred cycles of birth growth death and regeneration. Spiral dances and circles of remembrance for thousands of witches and wannabes will be held this weekend in San Francisco Sebastopol Palo Alto Santa Cruz and other Bay Area locales. At a spiral dance friends and strangers join hands and lose some -- but not all -- of their inhibitions. They cast a circle to create a sacred space -- invoking the elements of air fire water and earth. There's ecstatic drumming singing laughter and play.
