A Giant Swallowtail leaves a coneflower for a Fritillary to enjoy. I know this looks photoshopped, but I swear it's not... just well timed. Prairie Garden Trust in Missouri.

According to a friend, this represents the first county record in Ripley County, MO.

Species: Cinclus cinclus.

Location: River Goyt, Cheshire.

A medium-sized, plump bird, the dipper is often seen sitting on a stone in a river or stream, bobbing up and down. It can be found around fast-flowing streams and rivers, mostly in upland areas, It feeds on underwater invertebrates, such as stonefly and caddis fly larvae, by walking straight into, and completely under, the water to find them. Info: Wildlife Trust.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

A wall brown butterfly basking on a footpath at the summit of Leckhampton Hill near Cheltenham. This shot was taken about eight years ago with an old Canon Powershot A400 compact camera. I haven't seen a wall brown butterfly at this site for several years now.

"JUST LOVE THIS IMAGE !"

Britain's smallest grebe is a dumpy and buoyant bird that frequently dives for fish and aquatic invertebrates. It was my good fortune to see one fairly close and in the open.

The Boat-billed Flycatcher (Megarynchus pitangua) is a passerine bird. It is a large tyrant flycatcher, the only member, monotypic, of the genus Megarynchus.

It breeds in open woodland with some tall trees from Mexico south to Bolivia and Argentina, and through to Trinidad.

The nest, built by the female, is an open saucer of sticks. The typical clutch is two or three whitish eggs heavily blotched with brown. These are incubated mostly by the female for 17–18 days with a further 24 days to fledging.

Adult Boat-billed Flycatchers are one of the largest species of tyrant flycatcher, measuring 23 cm (9.1 in) long and weighing 70 g (2.5 oz).

The massive black bill, which gives this species its English and generic names. The call is a strident trilled nya, nya, nya.

Boat-billed Flycatchers wait on a concealed perch high in a tree and sally out to catch insects in flight. They will also take invertebrates off the foliage and eat some berries. Wikipedia

...or in more common parlance, a plastic worm with embedded hook. It's a piece of tackle found in many a fisherman's tackle box. That wire apparatus on the hook is a weed guard, designed to allow the worm to be pulled through weeds without hanging up, while still hooking any fish that may strike.

Fun facts about ants, an excerpt taken from Insect Library - Terro: "They are social insects, which means they live in large colonies or groups. Depending on the species, ant colonies can consist of millions of ants. ... Ant colonies also have soldier ants that protect the queen, defend the colony, gather or kill food, and attack enemy colonies in search for food and nesting space"

For me, I thought it was interesting to find out that they are pollinators too, although their flying counterparts are better at it, since they can spread the pollen longer distances. Which means they are an important factor in keeping a healthy ecosystem. This little black ant was collecting pollen from my portulaca flowers and seemed to enjoy the nectar as well.
