The Louvre (UK: /luːvr/; US: /luːv(rə)/) or the Louvre Museum (French: Musée du Louvre, pronounced: [myze dy luvʁ]) (French About this sound (help·info)) is the world's largest museum and a historic monument in Paris, France. A central landmark of the city, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the city's 1st arrondissement (district or ward). Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 72,735 square metres (782,910 square feet).[3] The Louvre is the world's second most visited museum after the Palace Museum in China, receiving more than 9.26 million visitors in 2014.

The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace, originally built as a fortress in the late 12th century under Philip II. Remnants of the fortress are visible in the basement of the museum. Due to the urban expansion of the city, the fortress eventually lost its defensive function and, in 1546, was converted by Francis I into the main residence of the French Kings

Common Snipe / gallinago gallinago. 23/08/19.

Soft evening light on a late summer's day was just what was needed. The colours on the water surface were beautiful and images were there for the making ... just a matter of choosing a subject from the various waders present.

This Snipe caught my eye standing at the end of a large partially submerged tree trunk. Even though it was further away than I would have liked and part camouflaged against the weathered wood, it's intricate black, brown and gold patterned plumage still showed through clearly.

I confess to having a soft spot for Snipe and to see them occasionally out in the open is always a bit of a treat.

So, to see this one in the open - posing - standing in 'pretty water' - and bathed in gorgeous evening light put a huge smile on my face and made the day :-))

The plane of the Milky Way is rich in star-forming regions, such as the one pictured in this stunning scene by ESA’s Herschel space observatory. To the far-infrared eye of Herschel, this region reveals an intricate network of gas filaments and dark bubbles interspersed by bright hotspots where new stars come to life.

The cooler regions, which emit light at longer wavelengths, are displayed in a red-brownish colour. Hotter areas, where star formation is more intense, shine in blue and white tones. Some areas are particularly bright, suggesting a number of luminous, massive stars are forming there.

Particularly striking is the chaotic web of gas filaments we see in this scene. Astronomers think there is a link between star formation and the filamentary structures in the interstellar medium. In the densest strands, the gas that makes up the filaments becomes unstable and forms clumps of material bound together by gravity. If dense enough, these collapsed blobs of gas eventually go on to become newborn stars.

Observations by Herschel showed the filamentary complexity to be ubiquitous in the plane of our Galaxy, from a few to hundreds of light-years. In nearby star-forming clouds, within 1500 light-years of the Sun, these filaments seem to be roughly all the same width – about a third of a light-year. This suggests a common physical mechanism in their origin, possibly linked to the turbulent nature of interstellar gas clouds.

The star-formation region in this image, centred around –70º longitude in galactic coordinates, is located in the Carina neighbourhood, home to the glorious Carina Nebula. Located some 7500 light-years away, Carina is one of the largest clouds of gas and dust in the plane of the Milky Way. It hosts the famous Eta Carinae, one of the most luminous and massive stellar systems in our galaxy.

Herschel, which operated from 2009 until 2013, was a large space telescope observing in the far-infrared and submillimetre parts of the spectrum. This spectral range is ideal to observe the glow from cool dust in the regions where stars form. As part of Hi-GAL, the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey, the observatory surveyed the plane of our Galaxy, exploring the Milky Way’s star-formation regions in unprecedented detail. This image, a product of Hi-GAL, combines observations at three different wavelengths: 70 microns (blue), 160 microns (green) and 250 microns (red).

Excerpt from masadatours.com:

King Harod had his palace on the northern side of Masada’s plateau summit constructed in the style of a classic Roman palace. The Northern Palace is also called the “hanging palace” as it is constructed on three natural rock terraced levels starting on the top of Masada and “hanging” 30 meters over the edge on the northern rock face. The palace complex is in fact a group of royal buildings and the location is the highest point on Masada. The architecture is opulent and constructed with intricate engineering. This must have been a daunting task and great achievement considering the harsh natural surroundings and extreme conditions. The palace would have needed a reliable source of water and so they built a sophisticated water system which accumulated rain water and supplied the palace with all the water it needed. Two cisterns were hewn into the rock underneath the three terraces in addition to other cisterns on Masada.

The upper terrace was mainly used as a residence and there are 4 grand bed rooms. The first level also has a semi-circular colonnaded balcony from which there are brilliant views of the Dead Sea. All of the palace rooms were originally decorated with frescos and they had mosaic floors. The floors on the first level were covered with black and white mosaics with geometric shapes. Even the exterior was brightly painted in intricate designs. To the west is a staircase (which has been damaged by an earthquake) which led from the top level to the lower levels.

On the second terrace there are two concentric walls with two rows of columns supporting a roof covering over a central courtyard. As you look down on the middle terrace today you can clearly see the circular structures.

The lower level also has a colonnaded hall this time with an uncovered central trapezoid- shaped entrance courtyard, bath rooms, storerooms, a kitchen and bathhouse. The square yard is surrounded by a row of double columns with Corinthian capitals. There is a retaining wall surrounding the lower level. The main bath house, for the rest of the residents on Masada was built to the south of the North Palace.

Pookalam is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor.Tradition of decorating Pookalam is extremely popular in Kerala and is followed as a ritual in every household during ten-day-long Onam celebrations.

'Pookalam' consists of two words, 'poov' meaning flower and 'kalam' means colour sketches on the ground. It is considered auspicious to prepare Pookalam, also known as 'Aththa-Poo' during the festival of Onam.

According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. It falls in the beginning of Chingam, a month in Malayalam Calendar which corresponds to August/ September in the Gregorian Calendar.

Carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, Atham and tenth day, ThiruOnam are most important of all. Popularity and presentation of rich culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the National Festival of Kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boat-races and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam.

People believe the spirit of their dear King Mahabali visits Kerala at the time of Onam. Besides making several other arrangements, people, especially adolescent girls prepare elaborate Pookalams to welcome their most loved King.

More on Onam, visit:www.onamfestival.org/

Onam (Malayalam: ഓണം) is a fesitival celebrated by the people of Kerala, India. It falls during the month of Chingam (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary Emperor Mahabali. The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala's culture and tradition. Intricate flower carpets, elaborate banquet lunch, snake boat races, Puli Kali, and the Kaikottikkali dance all play a part in the festival.

Onam is an ancient festival which still survives in modern times. Kerala's rice harvest festival and the festival of rain flowers, which fell on the Malayalam month of Chingam, celebrated the Demon King Mahabali's annual visit from Patala (the underworld). Onam is unique since Mahabali has been revered by the people of Kerala since prehistory.

According to the legend, Kerala witnessed its golden era during the reign of King Mahabali. Everybody in the state was happy and prosperous and the king was highly regarded by his subjects, so much so that even the gods under Indra became jealous of Mahabali, and they approached Mahavishnu claiming that Mahabali is now equivalent to an Indra. Since a world with two Indras represents imbalance, Mahavishnu assumed the form of a dwarf: the Vamana avatara had tricked him to Patala. However, as Mahabali was equivalent to an Indra, he had to wait until the next Yuga where he would be the Indra. In the meantime, with the grace of Mahavishnu, Mahabali visited his people on an annual basis. Mahavishnu served Mahabali as a gatekeeper in Patala as the Lord himself serves his greatest devotees.

It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.
