The sun has sunk into a soupy mixture of clouds over Lake Erie in this view made from the shore at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio.

SEE MONSTER is a retired rig from the North Sea, transformed into one of the UK’s largest public art installations to inspire global conversations about reuse, renewables and the great British weather.

Voyaging from the far reaches of the North Sea, SEE MONSTER has endured blustery winds and roaring waves as it encircled the UK coast in search of a new home. After a lifetime weathering the stormy seas, the retired rig has been reborn at shore in the former 1930s lido, the Tropicana. Audiences from far and wide flocked to the beach to welcome SEE MONSTER, the wild beast that has never been seen before…

By the Autumn of 2022, having been transformed along its journey, the weather-beaten monster came alive in Weston-super-Mare, as a colossal manifestation of all it has witnessed along its journey around the turbulent coast. The reawakened entity is a joyous celebration of the great British weather and British eccentricity, presenting a new vision for what the monster could become. As a pioneer towards a greener future, SEE MONSTER explores the concept of inherited structures, be those physical, social, or environmental. What do we do with the structures we inherit? And what actions can they inspire?

guests will pass behind the thrashing cascade of a 10-metre waterfall, and under the shimmering scales into the cavernous underbelly of the beast…

With the opportunity to travel up and inside, you will pass behind the thrashing cascade of a 10-metre waterfall, and under the shimmering scales into the cavernous underbelly of the beast… Within the wild garden you will find hidden routes to explore the rehabilitated Monster, where embedded throughout will be new approaches to a more sustainable and greener future. You may find yourself engulfed within a playful collection of clouds. Whatever the weather, SEE MONSTER will encourage interaction and playfulness at the heart of Britain’s cultural cornerstone: creating the sense of children gleefully jumping in puddles, whilst adults grumble at drizzly grey skies and strangers bond over something mutually shared.

As a creation of new from old, the regeneration of the rig, transformed from its former life, will champion the role of reuse and creativity within our future.

SEE MONSTER is part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK. A once-in-a-lifetime celebration of creativity, taking place across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and online from March to November 2022.

1933-1945

The outer castle gate was 1933/1934 converted into a war memorial. In the 30s it became common practice to use the space for mass events, the speakers most of the time speaking from the balcony of the New Castle to the crowd of people (1932 rally during the visit of Hermann Goring, 1934 rally of the Fatherland Front, 1938 Nazi rally for Adolf Hitler [whereby the Heroe's square internationally became the synonym for Annexation; the play "Heldenplatz" by Thomas Bernhard (premiere November 4, 1988 at the Burgtheater) in this context before and after the premiere caused heated discussions]). During the Second World War at Heldenplatz were held outdoor exhibitions (for example, "The victory in the West", 1940).

Second Republic

1945-1953 the Heldenplatz by the Soviet Element of the Allied Council (which had housed his "officers' house" and other facilities in the Hofburg) was used for events which one wanted to give a military context. From 31 October 1953 followed on Heldenplatz the ceremony for the handover of the command of the Vienna Inter Allied Command, taking place monthly; until its dissolution this practice was continued. Furthermore, the space has been used for large gatherings and events (for example, 1983 rally to mark the visit of Pope John Paul II, 1984 rally against the construction of the Danube power plant Hainburg, 1993 final rally of the campaign "SOS Fellow Human Being" ["Sea of Light"]). - Military Celebration of the Armed Forces (compilation of Martin Senekowitsch [according to Guard Chronicle of Guard Battalion]): The Heldenplatz was in the Second Republic often the scene of military celebrations. From November 2, 1955 every year: Heroes ceremony for the fallen soldiers of both World Wars at the crypt of the Castle gate. March 13, 1963: commemoration of the "Anschluss" of Austria in 1938. 18 October 1963: 300th anniversary of Prince Eugene. February 12, 1964: commemoration of February 1934. April 27, 1965: commemoration of the victims of the Nazi regime. 16 May 1965, 14 May 1966, 15 May, 1967 to 1970: Big Tattoo. 8 July 1974 and 8 July 1980: Swearing-in of Federal President Dr Rudolf Kirchschläger. September 6, 1975: Big tattoo (20 years Garrison Wien). April 27, 1981: Republic Celebration. July 7, 1986: Big Tattoo (departure of President Rudolf Kirchschläger). July 8, 1986 respectively July 6, 1992: Big Tattoo (swearing-in respectively departure of Federal President Dr Kurt Waldheim). July 8, 1992: Swearing-in of Federal President Dr Thomas Klestil.

Symbolic meaning

The Heroes Square already by the Habsburgs was laid out as a place of political representation. In the First Republic it served the Nazis before being banned as a symbolic parade ground. This was opposed by the Dolfuss-Schuschnigg regime holding the pan-German Catholics Day 1933 and other celebrations. However, a particular importance gained the Heldenplatz on March 15, 1938 after the Nazi takeover. On this day, Adolf Hitler as part of a mass event announced "the entry of my homeland into the German Reich". Due to this symbolic charging, the Heldenplatz also in the Second Republic in the collective memory remained connected with the "Annexation", although there was no lack of attempts of a new symbolic connotation. Artistic expression this found in the play by Thomas Bernhard entitled "Heldenplatz" and premiered in 1988 and in a poem by Ernst Jandl. From the 1990s, however, events as the Sea of Light of the action "Fellow Human Being" on January 23, 1993 as well as the demonstration against the new government of ÖVP (Austrian People's Party) and FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria) on February 19, 2000 increased who saw themselves as counterpoints to March 15, 1938.

1933-1945

A rather special Jaguar E-Type Coupé has been converted into a lightweight road/race machine. The car was originally supplied to the North American market and was repatriated back into the UK during the 1990s. In 1999, Jack Brabham drove the car at the launch of the Everyman Motorsport Classic Car Experience at Brands Hatch and from this time, the car has been cared for by the Jaguar specialist, John Arnold of Revival Motorsport. John is regarded as one of the best Jaguar specialists in the UK today. His ability to build reliable fast road/race cars with exceptional handling is renown within knowledgeable circles. Within the past two years, John has transformed and rebuilt the car, into a lightweight E-Type with Series I features.

The works involved the fitting of lightweight aluminium doors, aluminium bonnet, a composite rear hatch that houses the Le Mans fuel filler and re-modelling the rear end. Mechanically, the specification further impresses and a short résumé includes; the engine having been rebuilt using forged Rob Beere pistons, wide blade connecting rods and a big valve cylinder head that includes Rob Beere camshafts. The fuel is supplied from the 90 litre alloy fuel tank via the triple Weber DCOE carburettors with the exhaust gases exiting via the sand bent exhaust manifolds. The cooling system incorporates an alloy radiator and header tank. Power is in the region of 340 bhp. Drive is provided by an alloy flywheel, AP Triple Green 9.5 inch clutch and a short tail shaft Getrag Jaguar gearbox to a 3.07:1 Powerlok differential. The handling is supplied by a lightweight geometry set up with adjustable Gaz shock absorbers, torsion bars at front with coil overs at the rear and billet aluminium steering arms attached to a new steering rack. The steering column has been overhauled top and bottom which is a job often neglected. The brakes are four pot callipers with vented discs to the front with twin pot callipers to the rear.

little over a year ago tarcan became ill with arthrosis. at times he could hardly walk, it took little steps and lots of pain medication. i wanted him to have as little medication as possible; tarcan's organs are weakened because of a sepsis suffered in the past.

as i wondered how we could move forward i came across a picture of ed mulrenin and his dog sonntag in alaska (see below). all i thought was 'i understand this man'.

in the next few months tarcan was feeling better. together with his vets we had found ways to keep him strong and happy without the regular pain medication. the idea that tarcan and i could go on a journey had gotten stuck in my mind.

recently tarcan was diagnosed with early signs of alzheimer's. fortunately he is still fit and in good spirits. tomorrow we'll be heading north, camping in the wild as much as possible.

On the Busselton Jetty

One of the times this aircraft came into Aberdeen, it performed numerous low approaches at a large picnic thrown for the locals at the village of Whitehill near New Pitsligo. Malcolm Forbes, entrepreneur and publisher organised the event as his parents came from there. I think it was around 1987. 3 or 4 of us from the control tower were invited to come on the short flight by the crew. So there we were in a very posh 727 flying round Aberdeenshire at 50 feet. I got into the cockpit for the last low pass. Amazing. I did not have my camera. However, I remember looking at all the people on the ground, who were looking up in awe at this amazing sight. I still to this day have not seen any pictures of this historic aviation event. Can you help?

On another occaision, we were shown around the aircraft. The interior was amazing. It was reputed to be the best kitted out 727 in the world. With super avionics etc. There was a conference room, bedroom, bar etc. The artwork in there was worth millions. Whilst being shown the bedroom, one crew member piped up, "Elizabeth Taylor was sleeping on that bed just last week".

There was a world map on one of the walls, in the form of a large painting. If you pressed the button below it, a small bright light would come on, on the map and your location in the world would be shown. Very clever back then. No satnav or GPS in the 80's.

Commander, 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles

"Stand Watie was born near present-day Rome, Georgia in 1806 into the rich, landholding Ridge / Watie family. His Cherokee name was De-ga-ta-ga, or "he stands." In 1835, he was one of the signers of the Treaty of New Echota, which gave the traditional Cherokee lands in North Carolina and Georgia to the United States, in exchange for money and land in the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). The Treaty, opposed by nearly 90% of the Cherokee people, split the tribe into two factions - the pro-treaty side, led by Watie's uncle, Major Ridge, and the anti-treaty side, led by John Ross.

From 1838, until the 1846, the two factions fought an internal war, with the anti-treaty faction blaming the Ridges & Waties for the Trail of Tears. On June 22, 1839, Major Ridge, his cousin, John Ridge and his brother, Elias Boudinot were ambushed and murdered by anti-treaty tribesmen. Watie himself escaped death due to a timely warning. After the murders, he became the leader of the pro-treaty faction.

When the Civil War started, Watie sided with the Confederacy and formed the 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles, commanding the regiment at Pea Ridge. After the battle, he commanded a brigade of Native American troops. He and his men participated in eighteen battles and major skirmishes as well as a number of smaller skirmishes and raids. In 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General, the only Native American to be so on either side. In June, 1865, Watie was the last Southern general to surrender to the Federals. He served as a delegate for the negotiations for the Cherokee Reconstruction Treaty in 1866 and then retired from public life. He died in September, 1871." — National Park Service

Everyone hanging out outside. That's our future trespasser walking into the door... I think she had re-awoken by this point. Andrea's skunked-on mattress has now been moved outside of the house...Where it sat for *thirty eight* frickin' days, until I made a threat to put it on the curb, at which point a bumbling stooge of hers showed up unannounced, "paid" to retrieve the mattress, not knowing what day of the week it was, and without the rope he needed to keep the door to his vehicle closed after loading. We had rope. It was good rope for bedroom use. We did not give it to him. We gave him an elastic strap that we got for free at yard sale, and told him Home Depot was 2 blocks down the road. The experience was par for the course.

BACKSTORY: Oh, rainbows! Why not have a party for every color in the rainbow? We wanted to throw more parties, but it was hard to think of a bunch of specific themes, so we often didn't really have one. Clint had the idea to have a party for each color in the rainbow, in spectral order. Our first party was the RED PARTY: "I like red!": A celebration of red.
