#Untitled 158 by Scottish artist Aeneas Wilder.

A doughnut-shaped pavilion of wooden slats on stilts, #Untitled 158 offers a different perspective on the surrounding countryside. Light filtered inside, the quiet of the Limburg countryside interrupted by the creaking sound of your feet on the wood. Standing next to the vertical slats, the outside world becomes a natural slideshow as you look at the hamlet of Kerniel. “It’s a place that invites you to meditate on life,” they say.

#Untitled 158 is part of the “Pit” project; a series of nine outdoor artworks designed to make visitors look at the landscape differently, an initiative started in 2011 by Z33, the House for Contemporary Art in Hasselt, about 17km north of Borgloon. The project, which covers 20km, was designed as a half-day bike tour,or a full day for those travelling on foot.

First, apologies to BernieBountin, Jenny, and TravelBakerCounty: I don't know how but between you posting comments, the image disappeared. Don't ask. Thanks for the comments and fave. One of life and Flickr's little mysteries.

Now, as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, some "wildflowers" are deceptive: they aren't flowers, but rather light shining through translucent leaves that have just appeared. That was the case with the Sugarbush.

The day before, I saw this plant in the noonday sun, and it was a uniform burgundy color, well as uniform as a plant color can be. But at 10:30 AM the next morning, the sun was low in the east just having come over Mt. Diablo and into the Valley and the garden. (Mt. Diablo which is due east of my home, my "swamp", where I get some photos at the Alhambra Estuary, and now, Ruth Bancroft Garden, abruptly rises up out of the Ygnacio Valley to an altitude of 4,000 feet. The Garden (swamp, and home) is at the base of the western side. That means that the sun is predictably unpredictable regardless of month or season.

At 10:30 AM the sun was in perfect position to literally light up the newest formed leaves on this Sugarbush. While I'm used to having difficulty with the sun, I ma not used to it doing me such favors as making a work of art out of nature's more plain paintings.

I have mentally staked out several spots in the Garden to take advantage of this new knowledge. Keep in mind that I not only have to find a flower or plant, but the sun has to hit it, and the plant should be better in bloom than in leaf. I can think of only five plants where the leaves are of a perfect thickness for this to get lit so to speak. And remember that succulents, especially cacti, usually have thick leaves, often called "paddles" and in one species, "beavertails." In others the "leaves" are actually the stems and in the case of yuccas and some aloes, what looks like the trunk of a tree, and yet that trunk of a 30 foot yucca is actually a leaf or a flower stalk. You'll pardon me if I'm still learning the language of botany. A leaf is not always a leaf. A petal of a flower (as in the Puya tree) is actually the leaf after the petal has fallen off. The pistil and stamen are sometimes interchangeable especially in flowers that are self-pollinating. So, on top of botanical nomenclature, I only have the correct name of 50% of the flowers I post. No one told me that this would how I'd spend the last years of what's become a very interesting retirement.

[Super-Altissa / Rollei RPX 100 / February 2015]

A quick interruption of my new "season of orange" series. Why? As mentioned not too long ago, geeps in the street. In this case though, light power. I'm sure most people would find it necessary to bitch about the lack of freight, but anything street running is nice enough for me (though yes, obviously actual manifest would be appreciated). Whatever way you spin it, two more CSS 2000s head west down 10th St. Some last-minute decision making led to not following this crew, as I wanted to take my chances with the aforementioned Olive crew hitting the street with their freight to head west. We watched them do it, two hours later of course - well after last light had been reached.

Aside from the streetrunning, one would be VERY hard pressed to find any good reason to stand around in this neighborhood of Michigan City. Or, maybe you find entertainment in drug addicts high as all hell approaching you and watching a drunken domestic dispute unfold a few houses down from where you decide to shoot. I don't know, it's pretty hilarious to me most times...

The complications of village life. There are challenges you would find in a city too. Here, you see a disturbance. Make sure that you see what you see.

He's such a gorgeous cat, I feel mean posting this picture of him where he doesn't look so graceful, but it made me laugh!

The best evening commutes are the ones that are interrupted.

"We interrupt this transmission..." as the saying goes - and in this instance, we interrupt the short holiday we recently enjoyed in the South Island a couple of weekends ago to announce that New Zealand's "Bird Of The Year" for 2018 is the Kereru (or NZ Wood Pigeon).

For more information on this big beautiful bird, have a look at:

Thanks so much for visiting my Site, and thanks especially for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment; it's always nice to hear from you...!

Wednesday's 12.49 Leeds - Carlisle breaks the afternoon peace & tranquility at Garsdale station as it rolls in to neither pick up nor set down any pax.

Dave and I were awaiting news on the two southbound freight workings which had been activated, the Kingmoor - Basford Hall trunk working (annoyingly a light engine movement) and the logs, both of which had failed to report long after their departure times from the border city..

We were thinking of asking the signalman for the craic but a notice on the door instructs the public not to interfere with the undertaking of "safety critical work" so we didn't bother.

Country Living Tip #1: Interrupting supper eating bulls may prove unwise.

Update: Might be a female with horns. The call is out for a bovine expert.
