Mauritanian Conus Shells beads:
The women of Mauritania; Tuareg, Moorish, etc. weave these decorative shells into their hair and clothing and for many years, have incorporated them into their traditional necklaces and jewelry.
Conus Shell Beads:
Originally a magical possession of the medicine man, the Conus shell acquired monetary value as it traveled from East Africa. It was introduced in Western Africa in the 16th century.
The beads were cut from the crest of the conical shells and then polished smooth, creating a spiral disc. Ornaments made from Conus were also believed to act as powerful charms, amulet and talisman found in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, DRC, Mali and Burkina Faso, etc. They also indicated the high status and wealth of their owners. All beads are in the collection of MBAD/ABA African Bead Museum.

Here are some photos from the Boone, NC Honoring the Waters event. It was
on Kraut Creek, about a quarter mile from the confluence with the New
River. We put blessings into the water and sent it on its way - I figure it
will take about 2-3 weeks to reach the Kanawha.
Stay strong up there, my friends.

If you know me, you know how crazy internet catlady obsessed I've been about procuring a flame cat, LET ALONE get one of the new breeds of red tabby or red and white tabby. Well my friend Luxe gave me this little flame last night, and today I had this little red tabby waiting for me when I logged on! Turns out my VDay Orange cats were seret gingers. YAY!
Internet Research:
The organism is a Chestnut-backed Chickadee. This is not a migratory bird, however, it does make some seasonal movements. For example, in the summer CBCs usually move to the mountains, then back to lower elevations in the summer.
They are found on the pacific coast of North America. Clutch of the CBC can be between 1-11 eggs with two broods per year. They use a lot of fur when making their nests, about half of the nest material is animal hair. They can either nest in holes or in open cups. Hole-nesters are usually a little more successful, but even with this
adaptation, they are still vulnerable to predators like squirrels, snakes, and even black bears.

My Observations:
There seem to be multiple populations and because the CBC male and females look the same, it's hard to tell where the nearest mating members are. I didn't find a nest, but I suspect (based on my research) they are nesting nearby in holes. The distributions seem to be somewhat random, but the CBC is found more often near middle lake shrubs and trees, with one set sighted across the trail in a large bush. They seem to be wandering in sets of 1-3, but in the large bush it seemed that there could have been more (they are pretty quick!).
The CBC are probably feeding on insects around the pond, so I would say it's a source. The offspring probably hang out in their nests until they are old enough to fly and make it on their own. Immigrants probably don't come from too far because these birds are only found on the pacific coast. Immigrants may come from southern California or even Alaska.
Brain and Calculator:
Average number of offspring= 6.
After 5 cycles=16
After 20 cycles~ 67
This population is probably not experiencing this type of growth because they can lay anywhere between 1 and 11 eggs, yet not all eggs survive (they are vulnerable to many predators that also live in the park). It's an extremely variable clutch size.
From the Literature:
There is a study "A Reevaluation of the Effects of Forest Fragmentation on Rates of Bird-Nest Predation" by David Haskell from 1995 that evaluates wether forest fragmentation increases bird-nest predation. His study uses quail eggs to show that forest fragmentation doesn't seem to be affecting predation on quail eggs. I thought this would apply to the CBC in golden gate park because this is a fragmented area with a lot of human interaction, but it seems that the CBC may not be affected by increased predation.
Another piece of literature by Joseph Grinnell, "The Origin and Distribution of the Chestnut-backed Chickadee," published in 1904, discusses the habitats and behaviors of the Chickadee. This set of information(though published quite a long time ago) would confirm the presence of this species in Golden Gate Park and also offered other information that is relevant in SF Bay and similar to the chickadees he studied in Monterrey.

"Message from Mary S.: The future of the Internet as we know it is at stake. The FCC is proposing rules that would kill the open Internet and create a fast lane for companies that can afford big fees and a slow dirt road for the rest of us. We're fighting back--and we're being heard. This Thursday, May 15, the FCC will meet in Washington, DC, to vote on whether or not to advance this proposal. We'll rally in DC, but we won't stop there: We'll gather at FCC offices in 24 cities to send shockwaves through the FCC bureaucracy until they restore real Net Neutrality and protect the Internet for all of us."
