This is a photo near the start of the trailhead for the Kolob Canyon Trail in Zion National Park. The trail was a beautiful and pleasant 14 mile round trip. My hiking buddy Caleb and I hiked it together and saw the Koleb Arch near the half way point. Interestingly, I noticed the terrain changed quite a bit as we descened. It started off as I expected,... rocky. Their were large sections, however that were quite sandy. That slowed us down a little bit, but not too much. I just didn't expect it! I was thrilled to be able to go to Alaska for some extended backpacking! A good buddy of mine and myself spent 17 days backing and traveling throughout different parks in Alaska. From ridge trails and Denali National Park (formerly McKinley National Park) to Kennicot and Wrangel-St. Elias, we covered a lot of ground in a short time!
I took this ultra-wide photo of Mount Denali at the top of the first steep climb on the Kesugi Ridge Trail! At this point in the day some clouds moved in that provided a really cool and dramatic setting! I love the variations of clouds in the sky especially! This trail is located in Denali State Park which is just an hour or two south of Denali National Park! This trail offered some fantastic views of Mt. Denali and the surrounding mountains, forests and meadows! We spent 2 nights on this trail and it was a lot of fun! The landscape was always changing as we hiked up the mountain, onto the ridge and back down again!

This is a photo of the Kolob Arch near the turn around point on the Kolob Canyon Trail in Zion National Park. The trail was a beautiful and pleasant 14 mile round trip. During our trip to Alaska, my buddy and I made a visit to Denali National Park. We spent some time in the backcountry where their are no trails and no man made markers of any kind. We had a map and a compass to navigate where we wanted to go. I must say hiking in Denali National Park was some of the hardest hiking I have ever done in my life! I always knew that trails made it easier but I never realized just how much easier! I am so thankful for people who work and volunteer to maintain trails in all our parks! That said, I'm also very thankful for the remoteness and untouched land in Denali National Park, Alaska. It has a different feel and honestly made me appreciate what we do have. Backpacking in Alaska made me realize a few things: 1) Things will simply take as long as they take and you can't rush them. 2) I appreciate civilization more and I understand why people "settle down". You don't want to be bushwhacking your whole life!
