Interior design is a fairly recent design practice that champions the effective use of space. However, the practice has already created a demand out there for designers who not only can make a space look good without compromising on comfort, but also manage and oversee the project until the ideal design has been achieved. The students rendered every design with pencil, making each proposal a one-of-a-kind document. Mikhaiel says the process was well-suited to the Menokin project. “This subject is very sensitive and has a lot of emotion that I think you can’t detect with a digitized version,” she says. “When you draw in pencil, you have to be really careful and put a lot of thinking into it.

Hundreds of students from across the college's three disciplines met with firm representatives at the 2013 event.
“At one point we had a really good discussion about how hard it must have been [to be a slave at Menokin],” says Whitehead. “I noticed a change in the students’ work at that point, that all of them started tackling something much more substantial than the typical [tourist] interpretation.”
“We come from different backgrounds,” says Naredeen Mikhaiel. “So even though some of us don’t have that history … it was very important for us to do a lot of studying in order for us to develop a site.”

The team began working in September 2017. In conducting their research, the team discovered that written records were limited. Slaves were accounted for by numbers and names, but personal testimonies about day-to-day life didn’t exist.“The slaves weren’t really represented in any way,” says Nooranne Mufti (right), “so our job was to embody what that experience was for them.”
