Architect Marshall Strabala led the design team of the Houston Ballet's new Center for Dance, which celebrated its grand opening in 2011.
Architect Marshall Strabala said, "I hope that the Center for Dance will raise the awareness of ballet in Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. The new facility is situated at the north entrance to downtown Houston, so now residents and visitors can enter the city and see these beautiful dance studios above I-10. This creates a sense of community where the public can participate in this presentation of dance. The Houston Ballet is a world-class dance company, and I designed a world-class building for dance."
To date, the Center for Dance has been awarded four honors including: the American Institute of Architect’s 2012 Houston Architecture Design Award (category of architecture over 5,000 square feet); the Houston Business Journal’s Landmark Award, recognizing real estate projects that have made a significant impression on the Houston landscape; the 2011 Institutional Educational Design Excellence Award from the International Interior Design Association, Texas/Oklahoma Chapter; and 2011 Best of Year honoree in the education category by Interior Design Magazine.
Strabala led the design of the building while Director of Design at Gensler. He is currently Design Partner with 2DEFINE Architecture, a global architectural firm with offices in Chicago, Shanghai and Seoul.

Architect Marshall Strabala led the design team for the Houston Ballet's new Center for Dance which celebrated its grand opening in April 2011.
Located at 601 Preston Street in Houston's Theater District, the six-story, 115,000 square-foot facility, was designed with sustainable features and boasts nine dance studios, a dance lab that seats 200 for presentations and rehearsals, and artistic, administrative and support facilities for Houston Ballet and its academy.
"We are very excited that Houston's donor community has helped us to raise $42.3 million in new contributed dollars, which along with the ballet's existing assets, will make the project happen," remarks Houston Ballet Managing Director C.C. Conner.
"The Center for Dance gives Houston Ballet a home that is truly an international dance center. The building will be an icon for the art of dance nationally and internationally. And the Center for Dance will further secure Houston's reputation as a cosmopolitan, sophisticated, international city, with a thriving arts community," notes artistic director Stanton Welch.
Architect Marshall Strabala added, "I hope that the Center for Dance will raise the awareness of ballet in Houston, the nation's fourth largest city.
