Troy Smith opened the first Sonic Drive-In in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1953, calling it the Top Hat. The Top Hat was originally a small root beer stand. Customers would park anywhere on the gravel lot. On a trip to Louisiana, Smith saw a drive-in that utilized speakers for ordering and realized that he could increase his sales if he could control the parking and have the customers order from speakers at their cars with carhops to deliver the food. He borrowed several cars from a friend who owned a used car lot to establish a layout for controlled parking. He had some "juke box boys" come in to wire up an intercom system. His sales tripled immediately and his little root beer stand was a huge success. Grocery store operator Charles Pappe stopped by chance at the Shawnee drive-in and was very impressed. He got out of his car and began to take measurements of the stalls, trying to figure out why they were not all the same size, assuming that it was an essential ingredient of the business plan. Smith came out and introduced himself and explained that the stalls were different sizes simply because different-sized cars had been used when he laid everything out. The two men hit it off and negotiated the first franchise location in Woodward, Oklahoma, in 1956.

After the power plant and the cooling tower, here come pictures of the offices, including the baths, cafeteria as well as workshops. And, a little farther, a former Intercom coal distributor (big metallic structure).
Après la centrale thermique à proprement parler et la tour de refroidissement, voici un album sur les bureaux de la centrale, comprenant les bains-douches, la cafétéria ainsi que des ateliers. Et, un peu plus loin, un ancien distributeur à charbon d'Intercom (grande structure métallique).
Construite en 1921, cette centrale thermique d'Electrabel (originalement Intercom) située en région wallonne produisait d’énormes quantités d’énergie à partir de charbon. Responsable de 10% des émissions de CO2 de Belgique à elle-seule, l’usine a été fermée définitivement en 2007. Étendue sur une dizaine d'hectares, cette centrale est notamment formée d'un bâtiment principal et d'une tour de refroidissement, auxquels se rajoutent des bâtiments administratifs et une annexe munie d'une turbine de secours construits dans les années 60. Aujourd'hui la propriété de la société WANTY, cette centrale et surtout sa tour de refroidissement sont la proie d'urbexeurs venant du monde entier.
Located at Northmore Elementary school in West Palm Beach, this is a cage in the field about 100 yards from the portable classrooms. Its a multi-pair cable with each set of colored wires connected with waterproof beenies. They sometimes dry up and need replacing. Note next to the Intercom junction box (opened) is the box for the fire alarm wires. Also some of the equipment we use is at the top of the photo!

Was at a friend's house, and they still have one of those old home intercom system's with a radio built it. It doesn't work, though. Sad.
