The Dames Caves are a group of six sinkholes, three of which interconnect, and with three of the sinks having short cave systems in them. Over the years this well known location has received heavy abuse. The predominant soil type in the caves sinkhole entrances is broken glass, the walls have been repeatedly decorated in innumerable layers of the expressionism of modern day neolithic artisans, and the smaller surrounding trees hacked down for firewood (yes, "green" firewood – these are mostly city folks we’re talking about) to be used for building campfires inside the caves.

While I hate to see the landscape spoiled with signs and rules, in this case it seems to be paying off. The caves are receiving as much traffic as ever, but the littering (we did add a trash can near the sign) and spray painting has been minimal.

This entrance... www.flickr.com/photos/brcfla/4918879434/in/photostream

is located directly in front of the folks on the left.

UPDATE: The sign actually lasted 6 months before the plexiglass was broken and the poster torn out. They'll be replaced, better - stronger, Future vandals would do well to check their surroundings.
