I was able to get out and enjoy some photography with my fellow Flickr friend Wayne Moran .

It was a wonderful night of light, composition, and most important, friendship. It's always fun to spend some time with people who share so many of the same passions.

After trying to find several different angles, we settled on this one. This is St. Paul, MN with the Anson Northrup boat floating down the Mississippi River. The Cathedral of Saint Paul framed between the bridge arches and a few of the downtown office buildings off to the right.

Per Wiki... the High Bridge is an inverted arch bridge that carries Minnesota State Highway 149 and Smith Avenue over the Mississippi River in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. It was built and opened in 1987 at a cost of $20 million. The bridge carries two lanes of street traffic over the river and is the highest bridge in St. Paul, with a deck height of 160 ft (49 m) and a clearance below of 149 ft (45 m)

The only bad part of the evening was that Wayne's new Sony 24-105 lens went for a swim in the river. After my gasp, he goes, thankfully it's insured.

HFF!!

If you can see in the back of the place, my friend was part of a jam session the other night. They called and told me to meet them there. It was so cool, just sitting out under the stars listening to music. It didn't last long but it's time like this that make me glad I live in a small town.

Just so everybody knows, and you won't be feeling sorry for me and my camera, I had it insured. When I saving up to buy this place, I live in an apartment house that had very shady people staying there. At least once a month the cops would raid one of the apartments. I was worried that someone would steal my equipment so I insured it. Since it didn't cost much per year, I just kept paying it after I moved here. I really wasn't even sure it would cover dropping it. But it did and today, I picked up a new camera..:) I'm so happy. It really made my day. No deductible either.

Bet Ya didn't know these ole gators had such ugly browned teeth.....

Always surprises me, as all of them really don't.

Heard the swamp dentist only takes insured patients......

Guess that's why only some of them have real pearly whites....

Thanks for taking a look.

Here's wishing all a wonderful end to your week.

This image is of a 7 meter sandstone tower that was formed by nature, over perhaps thousands of years. The structure was called the "Teacup" and was tucked away on the north shore of Prince Edward Island. It was a popular spot for Instagrammers but also for nature lovers and only accessible after a short hike along the beach. I took this picture in Sept 2019 about 1 week after Hurricane Dorian ravaged PEI.

In Sept 2022, Hurricane Fiona hit the Canadian Maritime provinces and the Teapot is now gone forever. Also these red sandstone "cliffs" that frame the teapot in this image are gone forever. All that remains is flat sheet of sandstone on this edge of the North Atlantic to define the shoreline. All of the rubble was carried out to the ocean.

WIKIPEDIA - "Fiona is the deepest low-pressure system ever to be recorded on Canadian soil, with a pressure of 932.6 millibars.[94]

Teacup Rock, a rock formation and local tourist attraction on the coast near Thunder Cove, Prince Edward Island, was destroyed after Hurricane Fiona struck. Fiona also caused severe erosion to the province's dune system, particularly within Prince Edward Island National Park

Insured losses from Fiona in Canada are estimated to be between $300 and 700 million USD, which would make it the costliest hurricane in Canadian history."

Is Proud To Present

A Twain Orfan Film:

Say Something !

The Critics Have Spoken:

'I haven't had much time to see Twain's movies lately, .. but this one really got to me. I was with a friend of mine, trying to eat pop corn, ya know ? ..and, .. I could barely chew it .. tears were just streaming down my face. It was really an emotional experience for me... One of his best films to date I'd have to say. [Gwyneth Evergarden / New York Times / Flickr Artist ]

'So, Lobo and me went to see this movie and we were like, ya know, the acting of the main star, Mollie. She was like .. 'Wow'. I guess Twain's directing skills have improved quite a bit. He'll never be a musician like my Lobo is. And this windlight he uses has got to go ! But, .. yeh. Great movie ! I kept pulling Lobo's arm around me for comfort. It was sad .. and touching. Bravo Twain ! [Carisa Franizzi / Baby Girl Times / Flickr Artist ]

'I don't really know Twain at all. So I thought I'd check out one of his movies and, ..well, .. the

cinematography was awesome ! It just hit me in my gut ! The lead actor, Mollie, she projected such emotion ... I felt her isolation. I just wanted to get up from my theater seat and give her a hug, ya know? It was a solid movie. [Betta B. / Chicago Times / Flickr Artist ]

'I finally had the time to see this movie of Twain's. It is definitely moody, sad, and pulls at your heart strings. It hits all the right notes. The Production behind the movie by both Claire Danes

www.imdb.com/name/nm0000132/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm and also by Reese Witherspoons Production Company 'Hello Sunshine' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_Sunshine_(company) insured the quality of the Production would be top notch !! Twain as the Director .. yes. He did seem to work with Mollie well. I can feel through out the film this constant searching for something 'more' .. the missing element. It is sad and touching. I admit .. I loved it.

[》Sιℛι《 Amblack 《 / Independent World Association / Flickr Artist ]

'I am on the same sim as Twain is ..I'm working near by on the MGM Studio lot. I am dressed in only a rather skimpy swimsuit. Twain comes up to me and asks me if I could help him out and be in this photo for him. Now .. I had heard that Twain is a bit of a caution. Actually .. insane ! Here I am in the middle of a photo shoot ..almost naked. I was ready to turn him down ..then he tells me. 'You'll need to put more clothes on for this movie.' .. Well? I've never had a Director tell me I'd need more clothes ! So I thought that was a good sign. So I walk off the MGM studio lot and go with Twain to this remote area. I sit down on these pillows, all comfy. Twain tells me.. 'No! No pillows ! ' Twain throws out the pillows .. ? So I'm sitting there on the bare wood. He asks me to tell him a sad story .. and I start to tell him about when I was much younger, and how I had this puppy .. how it suddenly took ill, .. and .. and .. [waves her hands in front of her face ],... sorry, .. I , ... I just can't ... go there ... Anyways, .. I just felt so sad and isolated. Alone. Twain really knew how to draw out my emotions. The funny thing is most Directors are really very talky .. talk a lot. Twain was really very quiet. It must have taken about an hour to do this one scene alone. But he seemed rather 'normal' ? I'd work with him again. The pay wasn't that great. But he seemed a good Director and he gave me a coupon that has a $35.00 Linden value at any Perkins Restaurant. He let me watch the dailies of the filming as it proceeded which no other Director had ever let me do before. Seemed like a decent fellow. So .. yeh .. I'd work with him again. What else can I say?

He dresses in a formal suit on set everyday .. that's a bit much. Other than that no complaints.

The Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history, and the most expensive natural disaster in the world in 2018 in terms of insured losses.

Named after Camp Creek Road, its place of origin, the fire started on Thursday, November 8, 2018, in Northern California's Butte County. Ignited by a faulty electric transmission line, the fire originated above several communities and an east wind drove the fire downhill through developed areas. After exhibiting extreme fire spread, fireline intensity, and spotting behaviors through the rural community of Concow, an urban firestorm formed in the foothill town of Paradise. Drought was a factor: Paradise, which typically sees five inches of autumn rain by November 12, had only received one-seventh of an inch by that date in 2018. With the arrival of the first winter rainstorm of the season, the fire reached 100 percent containment after seventeen days on November 25.

The fire caused at least 85 civilian fatalities, with one person still missing as of August 2, 2019, and injured 12 civilians and five firefighters. It covered an area of 153,336 acres (620.5 km2; 239.6 sq mi), and destroyed more than 18,000 structures, with most of the destruction occurring within the first four hours. The towns of Paradise and Concow were almost completely destroyed, each losing about 95% of their structures. The towns of Magalia and Butte Creek Canyon were also largely destroyed. By January 2019, the total damage was estimated at $16.5 billion; one-quarter of the damage, $4 billion, was not insured. The Camp Fire also cost over $150 million in fire suppression costs, bringing the total cost of the fire to $16.65 billion.

The same month, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), the utility company responsible for the faulty power line, filed for bankruptcy, citing expected wildfire liabilities of $30 billion. On December 6, 2019, the utility made a settlement offer of $13.5 billion for the wildfire victims; the offer covered several devastating fires caused by the utility, including the Camp Fire. On June 16, 2020, the utility pleaded guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The Camp Fire is the deadliest wildfire in the United States since the Cloquet fire in 1918, and ranks number 13 on the list of the world's deadliest wildfires; it is the sixth-deadliest U.S. wildfire overall.

I was very happy about being offered access to this fascinating building by a very nice man, who was willing to show me proudly around his workplace and tell me all about it. :-)

backstory.

my mom died 37 years ago. when my dad decided to allow her things to be cleared out before he remarried, my sister went through mama's things and decided who should get what. she took all the diamond jewelry and sent me some garnets which I had never seen. I already had an old rocking chair. after my dad died I would get his desk.

at the first of this year, I read a story in the New Yorker about a company in NYC that takes old heirloom jewelry which has been lying in jewelry boxes unused and makes pieces more relevant to the times. [spurjewelry.com/pages/faqs-1] I thought of all those garnets. so I emailed the company and scheduled a phone conference. it took over a month just to get the phone appointment. once I talked with the jewelry designer and sent her photos of what I had, I was sent a prepaid insured box in which to send the jewelry. meanwhile the designers were drawing up choices for me. I sent the box off to NYC after I chose which design I wanted.

[picture of my jewelry in comments below. the circle pin is mine, the gold band was my wedding ring from my first marriage. the rest was my mom's. any and all gold could be melted down to put into my ring and I would receive a credit]

that was 3 months ago.

today a package came in the mail with my new ring and the leftover stones. lots of leftovers.

btw, the only reason I could afford this ring was a gift of $$ from my elder son and his partner. If I had more money I would use up those stones in another ring, but not for now.

I have the ring on tonight and it's beautiful. my mom gave me her diamond earrings before she died. they weren't diamonds, but who cares. the ring has her earrings on the top and is encircled with the garnets.

the designer was wonderful to work with and it was an exciting experience.

happy things.

pardon my wrinkly arthritic hands, they are old working hands, just like my grandma's.

I know that a number of people are suffering through a brutal winter and the key is Wannabe Warmer Wednesday. I’m a tad bit late, but that warmth will hopefully carry over to tomorrow and we can all dream together. From that island in the middle of the Pacific to your island wherever that may be. A bit of warmth to touch your soul and brighten your day from Honolulu, Hawaii

And as a footnote…the new gear has arrived and IS insured. Now I just have to find a nice day to make sure that I’m up to doing a paddle without ending up swimming with those lumpy lizards.

These guys are the best friends anyone enjoying the outdoors could wish for. Last year, for whatever reason, they were late in arriving and the mosquitoes, gnats, and other flying nuisances took full advantage. This year a timely arrival insured that puttering around the yard or going for a walk was without wild hand-waving at various intervals to disperse the swarms of pesky ones. It's really quite remarkable to see the squadrons of these remarkable creatures on patrol serving the highly appreciated function of bodyguards. One of the rarely considered amenities of living on a lake, in which they spend the larger portion of their lives before emerging for their season in the sun.

This assortment was photographed comfortably on temporary leave from patrol duties surrounding my patio. A big thank you to all for their service.

Time to tidy up Lightroom and get up to date on commenting - this one was from October 2016, not sure how I missed it, but with some minor adjusting of shadows and highlights, I love what I ended up with. I'd just had my 70d fixed (luckily it was insured) so was getting some use from it!

Left, well Reinforced Concrete Tower of Pit n°19 designed to extract 6000tons net/day, last example of the technical peak. Located at the top of the tower, the machine, with its two motors of one power unit of 4400 horsepower, allows to raise from the bottom the 4*4-stage cages containing each a sedan of 3,000 liters. Its operation is automated and insured by some employees while up to 5,000 miners work underground from the various pits focused on this site. Nearby, to the right, the older pit n°11.

As long as I can remember, I have enjoyed taking pictures. The Kodak Pocket 110 camera was a constant companion in high school, but unfortunately, so was beer. Most of my photos back then were auto-deleted due to being out of focus or heads were chopped off…auto-deleted then was flipping them in the trash once picked up from the K-Mart photo center. The great part of the Pocket 110 was it was very cheap and if it ended up in the Ohio or Blue Rivers (I have at least one in each) no tears were shed on the dollars lost.

For Christmas 1984 my family all chipped in and purchased me my first good camera. It was a Nikon 35mm package with a couple of lenses. It was a very low level/beginners’ camera, but much more appreciated than the dollars spent. I learned so much shooting with in while stationed on Adak Island, Alaska. It gave me many cherished treasures that I still have today. It also gave me a bad case of PPP (Protective Paranoia and Paralysis) the fear of something happening to it, thus it was better off staying warm and dry in the bag, safely stored away at home.

Time marched on and so did my passion. Technology and a couple of promotions in the Navy led me to becoming “Big Glass” (Big $$$ in the camera world) needy, so a double secret money saving stash was established. With each upgrade came a deeper sense of PPP. I used them a lot…but only in certain situations, weather forecasts and conditions. Looking back now, so many opportunities lost!

Then I read an article about insuring your gear on your homeowner’s policy. A quick call to my friend and agent and I was insured…Not since Mel Gibson screamed FREEDOM on the big screen in Braveheart has a man been set so free! Having all my equipment insured led me doing things like having it between my knees while kayaking...not doing stupid things with it, but using it as it was intended.

Getting my camera insured several years ago was the start of a total mind shift in this kid. Mentally reviewing what insurance went with me while out taking photos in the field, I realized that I was fully covered. My soul: By my relationship wit Jesus Christ, My body: By being retired Navy with VA/Tricare, My vehicle/camera: Before mentioned friend. This freedom doesn’t grant me permission to become totally reckless all the time, but it does when the time and place calls for it.

While editing this shot of the Monahan Flats and Clearwater Mountains of Central Alaska, I stopped and thanked God for that day, that adventure with my son, Jordan. This was taken from the Denali Highway, a highway that our rental car company said we could not take. Why did we take it? Because we were insured, and it was there and we wanted to. The thickness of the area between my ears and inability to sometimes except the word no may well have played a part!

We drove around 600 miles that day engulfed in the beauty of His creations, listening to Chris Stapleton, John Prine, Harry Chapin and laughing at the recording of the previous days pig encounter. The freedom and beauty seen, smelled, felt and most importantly shared on that day is priceless with protective paranoia and paralysis staying warm and dry in the bag, safely stored away at home.

Insured adventures before dementia!

I’ve been wanting to shoot this place for quite sometime. I finally got the chance on this trip. After having lunch with the family in Central, I ventured off on my own, got off the MTR at Quarry Bay, and it was a short five minute walk. Anticipation mounted as the Yick Fat, came into view, not unlike a hunter coming up on his prey. I walked around the back, up the steps, and entered the courtyard. I was surprised to see businesses like eateries, salons, and health clinics occupy the courtyard level. This was where Mark Walberg was being chased and tumbled down the side of the building in one of the Transformer films. As I hunkered down with my Nikon and tripod, I was not surprise to find other photo enthusiasts milling around, shooting, posing, strutting, jumping, with their smartphone, all for their IG account no doubt. As I sat on the floor, waited for nightfall and made some test shots, people came and went. 2 dark haired, attractive young women in particular were doing the same. I could tell they were not local. They struck up a conversation with a third, who was setting up a drone. I thought how cool that would be to get drone shots of this place. As I continue to do test shots, Claudia came over, curious as to what I was doing, with a mounted camera so close to the ground. She sat down next to me, and I showed her some of the test shots. As we chatted it up about her work with Emirates Airlines, traveling, and photography, the drone lifted off the ground. I envied at her life, to travel and see the world. As the conversation continued, we heard something crashing into the side of the building above us, the sound of the drone buzzing was interrupted, then bits and pieces of plastics came crashing down, landing just mere feet from where we were. Claudia joked that good thing we weren’t hurt, her face is her moneymaker and it was not insured. Shortly we were joined by her colleague Sabrina, and Marysha, a young Russian architect by day, and failed drone pilot in her spare time. Before my companions departed, they apologized for taking up so much of my time. I was glad they were there, because by the time they left, it was the perfect time to take the shot. Claudia, Sabrina, and Marisha, I thank you.

The CSX tracks define what's in the Ohio River Valley Floodplain. In this image the buildings to the right are in the floodplain and that entails having to choose between expensive flood insurance or being self insured. Being self insured means no bank loans.

Hurricane Dorian remains hit this area causing the most insured damage of any storm to date as it came over Halifax. However Hurricane Juan had higher winds and caused more damage to trees and coasts and was much scarier!

While a precise UK-wide figure isn't available, police seized over 120,000 vehicles for no insurance in 2023 according to the Motor Insurers' Bureau.

How it works:

ANPR cameras:

Police use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to scan vehicle licence plates.

MID check:

The system checks the scanned number plate against the Motor Insurance Database (MID) to see if the vehicle is insured.

Roadside action:

If a vehicle appears uninsured, officers can stop the driver and seize the vehicle at the roadside.

Consequences for uninsured drivers:

Vehicle seizure: The vehicle can be impounded by police.

Fixed penalty notice: A £300 fine may be issued.

Points on license: Six points can be added to the driver's licence.

Court appearance: Drivers may face a court appearance.

Unlimited fine: A court can impose an unlimited fine.

Driving ban: A ban from driving can be imposed.

What a hectic couple of weeks. We noticed Hank was a bit lame so made an appointment with the vet. It turned out his lameness was due to him having a fractured hip which would need surgery so an appointment was made with a specialist. Now it would be bad enough him having a fractured hip and needing surgery at the best of times but having this happen two weeks before we have to leave for our son's wedding just added that bit more stress to an already stressful situation. We had the consultation on Friday and when I explained our dilemma the surgeon offered to do the surgery that afternoon rather than us having to wait for the following week. Anyway the surgery was done Friday afternoon and we brought a very well medicated Hank home yesterday, sporting his "Cone Of Courage". And yes, I know most people refer to it as the Cone Of Shame but I feel when a little animal is taken from an environment where they feel safe and secure, left in a strange place not knowing if their humans will return for them, are prodded and poked by strangers and have an assault on their bodies (however much we know it is needed, they don't), there is no shame, only courage. As I write this he is resting peacefully and will purr whenever we go into the room so I would say all is well in his world once again.

PS. For anyone thinking about Pet Insurance and have had people tell them to just put the cost of the monthly insurance aside in a separate account for your pet instead, don't fall for it. I did and I can tell you that $50.00/month doesn't go very far when you have only had your pet for 18 months. Hank is now fully insured and even though none of this will be covered, I now have the peace of mind that in the future anything unexpected will be. it is a small price to pay for my peace of mind.

Not my photo!

A friend of mine in America, Len, sent me this photo yesterday.

I told him that I think it’s a beautiful photograph and asked if it would be okay to post this and his tale on Flickr. He agreed.

I met Len a number of years ago. We both play ‘Words with friends’ (it’s like the game of Scrabble) on their app.

He’s a good friend, and we often message or email.

Len and his wife live in Montana in the summer, and Arizona in the winter.

Len:

“Sunset View from our humble abode of the smoke stack at what was the Anaconda Cooper Co. Smelter where they processed copper, silver, gold, lead and zinc. It was shut down in the mid 1980’s. The stack is over 900 feet tall and the largest free standing stack in the world and is now a National Monument.

When it was in operation I brokered the insurance on all 1600 employees families that worked in the plant and had a claims office in Anaconda just to handle this insured plan. It was a great time in my life and a lot of fun. Many dollars commission for my family over the years. Also a lot of lifetime friendships built as a result. 😁👍”

The 1952-built Michipicoten pulls alongside of the Presque-Isle ore dock in Marquette, Michigan to be loaded full of taconite pellets through the corse of the night. This was a welcomed sight for me, as it insured that the LS&I would be running at near-capacity the following day.

While technically in the neighbor's yard, this limb is on the border. My wife saw this guy fly by the window and a run to the other end of the house located it. The Red-shouldered hawk insured the squirrel activity ceased and the birds all went into the thicket adjacent to this raptor's perch.

Thor, the brawny thunder god, is the archetype of a loyal and honorable warrior, the ideal toward which the average human warrior aspired. He’s the indefatigable defender of the Aesir gods and their fortress, Asgard, from the encroachments of the giants, who are usually (although far from invariably) the enemies of the gods.

In addition, Thor also played a large role in the promotion of agriculture and fertility of the land. This was another extension of his role as a sky god, and one particularly associated with the rain that enables crops to grow. Legend has it that when Thor struck the land with his mighty lightning, it insured the land's fruitfulness and the abundant harvest, which ultimately meant the survival of the inevitably long and brutal Scandinavian winter.

Well this was what the wind took, when the hurricane Irma passed over Miami, apparently the owner was not insured or did not care, anyway is a really decorative detail for this park in Biscayne Bay

Coincidentally, I was actually using a Kryptonite bicycle lock, but I struggled to lock my bike to the rack because there was just too much snow around it.

In the end, I put my chain lock around the suspension fork and outer bar of the bike rack. You can see the bright orange lock head in the picture if you look closely. Admittedly, that wasn't very safe, but the bike is insured against theft.

From the panoramico beside Chiesa del Carmine is a great spot for a shot of the marina, if the soul of Pizzo is revealed it would be one of a fisherman having been a fishing village for millennia and well known for the catching and processing of Tuna since Roman times. From antiquity up until the early 70’s during the early summer months tuna would swim right up to the beach chasing baitfish and ‘tonnare’ static nets were used to herd and trap the fish, the processing would happen usually near a river mouth to help flush away the leftovers. Today the tonnare is no longer used and fewer people make their livelihood from fishing but for those that do long line fishing with Japanese processing techniques have insured the quantity of the fish and the quality of Tuna that Pizzo is renowned for is maintained for future generations.

I took this on Sept 8th 2023 with my D850 and Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2 Lens at 24mm, 1/200s, f2.8 ISO 6400 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia ,Topaz, and DXO

London can be both a beautiful and scummy place all at once. Sadly the city showed me both its sides recently, my girlfriend and I had spent 4 days shooting around city, just before leaving we sat down at a pub outside Euston station where some thoughtless toerag lifted her camera bag when her back was turned. She lost a virtually new Canon 6D Mark ii along with all the pictures she had taken during the trip.

Photography is a hugely important part of both our lives and she’s worked tirelessly to save up for her pride and joy. As I’m sure you can imagine, she was absolutely devastated, not least because she wasn’t insured against theft. So I’m trying to raise some money to help her replace it and get back behind the camera as soon as possible. To do that, I’m offering a selection of 7 digital original images of my most popular London images up for sale for just £10, every single penny of profit from the sale of this set will be going towards replacing her equipment.

Your help would be most appreciated, thank you.

How the Isetta saved BMW......We tend to forget that Pre and early Post WWII, BMW was a middle class smaller car, not in the Mercedes class, and like many marques, it struggled post war, to survive. Into the picture strolls the debonair Italian, Renzo Rivolta, the Engineer owner of Iso SpA, maker of Italian refrigerators, motor scooters and small three-wheeled trucks. His engineers were instructed to design a compact car for the masses, and the emphasis had to be on Compact! Introduced in 1953 it was powered by a 236 cc motorcycle single cylinder engine, and went through various teething changes, but it sold modestly in Italy. Isetta is the diminutive of Iso.

Renzo lost interest, wanting to promote his Iso Rivolta upscale sports car, and cleverly sold licensing to companies in the Argentina, Spain, Belgium, France, Brazil, Germany,[ and the United Kingdom. Smart move and in Germany, BMW won the license. Gradually re-engineering the car in it's Germanic way and installing a BMW motorcycle engine, it was enormously successful in that post war period, and in 1955 it was the top-selling single-cylinder car in the world, with 161,728 units sold . Even with a small profit on each, it provided sufficient cash flow to allow BMW to survive and fund R&D to produce their 'sports sedans' beginning with the 1500, which finally insured solvency......enough that the company eventually purchased.....Rolls Royce for god' sake.

The very enthusiastic owner insisted I get into the tiny creature, and snapped the image with my camera. Thanks!

Tucumcari, NM. Probably not FDIC insured.

This row of thatched cottages in Mill Street, Houghton, dates from the late 1700s, though they have a 19th century gault brick street facade. They are Grade II-listed. Houghton is a pretty little village on the side of the River Great Ouse, some three miles east of Huntingdon.

Note the old green fire insurance plaque under the bunting on the end wall. They were used in the eighteenth and nineteenth century in the days before municipal fire services were formed. For most of the 18th century, each insurance company maintained its own fire brigade, which extinguished fires in those buildings insured by the company and, in return for a fee to be paid later, in buildings insured by other companies. But by 1825 fire marks served more as advertisements than as useful identifying marks.
