The building was commissioned by Georgia-Pacific and designed by the firm of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM). At the time of construction, it was the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world. The Georgia-Pacific Building was completed in 1971.

Window in memory of John Leslie Forss, Secretary of the Church for 7 years, and his wife Clara Jane Forss.
“FORSS. — [Died] On the 14th June (suddenly), at his late residence, 72, Fairford-street, New Parkside, John Leslie, the dearly beloved husband of Clara Jane Forss, aged 64 years.” [Advertiser 15 Jan 1931]
“Mr. John Leslie Forss. . . was born in Aberdeen. Scotland, in 1867, and came to South Australia at the age of 18. He was first employed by the Adelaide Marine Insurance Company. Two years later he received an appointment with Messrs. George Wills & Company, who then represented the Union Fire and Marine Insurance Company of New Zealand. In 1892 the Union Company was taken over by the Alliance Assurance Company. In this latter company Mr. Forss eventually became accountant and chief clerk, retiring in 1927 after 40 years' service. Mr. Forss lived in the Unley district for more than 20 years. He was secretary and treasurer of Manthorpe Memorial Congregational Church for a number of years.” [Advertiser 16 Jun 1931]

“Eight memorial windows, recently erected in the newly renovated Manthorpe Memorial Congregational Church, Unley, will be dedicated by the Rev. H. E. Shepherd on Sunday. The windows, which cost £200, will be unveiled by a member of each family commemorated.” [Advertiser 3 Feb 1948]
“The eight stained glass memorial windows dedicated at Manthorpe Memorial Church, Unley, on Sunday night took three skilled craftsmen three months to make. Each window is 12 ft. 6 in. high and 18 in, wide. In some there are 150 different pieces of glass, linked together with strips of lead. On each piece of glass the outline of the design, for that particular piece, was painted; then fried in a gas kiln, which reached a heat of up to 160 deg. Next the design was painted in on this piece, and it was fried again. Stained glass windows usually last as long as the church they're in.” [News 12 Feb 1948]

“At a meeting of the members of the New Parkside Congregational Church on Thursday evening, it was resolved to alter the name of the church to "Manthorpe Memorial,'' as a tribute of respect to the memory of the late Rev. C Manthorpe, who was largely instrumental in having the church built, and who was its first pastor.” [Advertiser 4 Mar 1899]
“The accommodation provided for the children attending the Manthorpe Memorial Church, Unley, having become too limited for the attendance, the foundation stone of a large structure was laid by Mrs. J. G. Jenkins on Saturday afternoon. There was a good attendance at the ceremony. The Premier (Hon. J. G. Jenkins) was present. . . There were 315 children on the roll, and the average attendance was 200. . . The new building will be built of freestone to harmonise with the church. The main hall will measure 55 ft. x 13 ft., and the infants' room 25 ft. x 16 ft. There will be eight classrooms of varying sizes. The builder is Mr. C. H. Guymer, and the architect is Mr. C. E.
