Another 'previously unpublished' shot taken in October 2017. With sharply increasing energy bills as we head into winter I think we will be needing some extra layers of insulation indoors too. Stay safe my Flickr friends - enjoy!
Norman Hudson holds a roll of this cool plastic mesh designed to back up batt fiberglass insulation. The worker on top of the scaffold is stripping off squares of 40-year-old stucco, while the man on the ground is loading into a truck.
Any colorful building material is a plus in my book, even though it will be covered over.
Gotta lift these rolls of insulation waaaay up high in the rafters of a new hangar at SJC.

This shot marks the point of 7000 photos added to my street photography album 'On the Street'. Quite the milestone though, thanks to the past couple of years, there are just a few re-edits in the mix too. Thank you all for your awesome support. Enjoy!

Came across this guy and another smaller bull during our first snowfall of the season a couple weeks ago. They were both hunkered down in the trees, trying to avoid the winds. I was amazed at how good their insulation is, as you can see from the snow gathered on his beautiful coat.
Woke up to 10 inches of snow overnight, and it's still coming down. Have a great Thursday!
Another of the relatively few moose we found during our late august Colorado moose safari, this cow was nibbling on frosty willows in Roosevelt National Forest. I love seeing these big ungulates with frost on their backs, a testament to their fur's efficient insulation.
Tomorrow will be my annual Christmas card post followed by a couple of days off of Flickr. The day after Christmas, I'll resume my 2024 in the rear-view mirror series.
A traditional yurt (from the Turkic languages) or ger (Mongolian) is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt and used as a dwelling by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. The structure comprises an angled assembly or latticework of pieces of wood or bamboo for walls, a door frame, ribs (poles, rafters), and a wheel (crown, compression ring) possibly steam-bent. The roof structure is often self-supporting, but large yurts may have interior posts supporting the crown. The top of the wall of self-supporting yurts is prevented from spreading by means of a tension band which opposes the force of the roof ribs. Modern yurts may be permanently built on a wooden platform; they may use modern materials such as steam-bent wooden framing or metal framing, canvas or tarpaulin, Plexiglas dome, wire rope, or radiant insulation.
Yurts have been a distinctive feature of life in Central Asia for at least three thousand years. The first written description of a yurt used as a dwelling was recorded by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. He described yurt-like tents as the dwelling place of the Scythians, a horse riding-nomadic nation who lived in the northern Black Sea and Central Asian region from around 600 BC to AD 300.
The Royal Bank Plaza building is the Toronto-based Royal Bank, is a skyscraper 180 m. And there is another like a little lower, outer structures are largely covered glass; together they have more than 14,000 windows. Each of these windows is coated a layer of 24 carat gold (100% gold). At a cost of about $ 70 per window, the total value of gold used in the windows amounts to $ 1 million. But, due to the manufacturing technique used to produce the glass, this gold, giving a distinctive color to the windows, it is not recoverable. Gold to act as thermal insulation to reduce heating costs was chosen.
Wouldn't it be nice to insulate ourselves from the cold by puffing out like this sweet Goldfinch, then when someone walks by, we just suck it all back in :)

View of damaged high-percentage asbestos millboard insulation in basement of residential structure, formerly used as heat shielding on wooden support member.
Often mistakenly thought of as regular cardboard or "transite" paneling, asbestos millboard is a distinct type of insulation, usually distinguished more notably by its density and friability, as compared to corrugated paper or cement-based materials.
Material characterization aside, this damaged asbestos material will be removed by properly trained and licensed asbestos abatement contractor personnel.
This photo were taken back in March 2012. I am just catching up with them. I had started to put up our trip to Northland but for some reason never got them all up.
Auckland, based around 2 large harbours, is a major city in the north of New Zealand’s North Island. In the centre, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade. ― Google
With the insulation layers in place its time to start thinking about puting a layer or two of paint on the outside to protect from the rain, most prevailent in august here.

All the insulation material inside the colapsed roof (or who knows where from) dropped to the floor and got wet by the rain water. Then I came around and shot some pictures.

Wires coated in plastic insulation routed to connectors on a plastic "66" punch-down block. 66 blocks are the workhorse cross-connection points used throughout the telephone system.
It's hard to imagine modern electronics and communication without plastics.

"Calgary’s unusually cold start to the winter is causing headaches for homeowners, property managers and tenants, and response requests are busier than ever. A big issue is ATTIC RAIN: a phenomenon caused by prolonged extreme cold spells & poor ventilation followed by rapid warming of temperatures. It’s caused by excessive moisture building up in the attic, which then freezes to beams and ceilings. When temperatures rise, the frost melts and leaks through the ceiling.
There are a number of contributing factors to attic rain such as but not limited to poor intake ventilation, exhaust, high humidity or lack of insulation. These can all contribute to the process, making it tough to nail down the cause.
These problems become visible when temperatures start to climb, melting the frost and creating leaks. The leaks can manifest themselves by entering the dwelling through light fixtures, bathroom exhaust vents, down the sides of walls and ceilings. You may notice drips/stains in your ceilings that were not there before. Those stains could be an early indicator that an expert should be called in to inspect the attic." From Residential Services on 11 January 2022.
Today, 11 January 2022, our temperature got up to about PLUS 8°C. Sunrise is at 8:36 am and sunset is at 4:52 pm. A lovely sunny day! Starting yesterday, our deepfreeze has finally come to an end - at least until the next one.
How good this felt when I was out on a walk at Carburn Park again this morning, 11 January 2022! The continuing several Trumpeter Swans and one Tundra Swan looked so different in the sunshine compared to how they looked a few days ago. The sleepy Porcupine was an extra special treat (at least to me).
I haven't yet edited photos from today, so am posting another five images from my archives. I am adding the description that I wrote under a previously posted photo taken the same day.
"In the early afternoon of 7 November 2014, I drove over to the east end of Fish Creek Park and was lucky enough to see two of these beautiful Rusty Blackbirds. IUCN Status: Vulnerable. I very rarely see these birds, so I’m always glad when I do see one. It was interesting to watch this one pick up and then toss aside endless leaves to check underneath them for food. Eventually, it did find a big, fat, juicy water worm of some kind, and ate it. As you can see from the photo, this bird is camouflaged quite well in those surroundings."
“The Rusty Blackbird is one of North America’s most rapidly declining species. The population has plunged an estimated 85-99 percent over the past forty years and scientists are completely puzzled as to what is the cause. They are relatively uncommon denizens of wooded swamps, breeding in the boreal forest and wintering in the eastern U.S. In winter, they travel in small flocks and are identified by their distinctive rusty feather edges and pallid yellow eyes.” From AllAboutBirds.
If you're thinking of maybe putting a shed in the garden of your Icelandic holiday home it may be a good idea to allow 3 x the width of your shed for solid wall insulation (does get pretty windy in exposed areas) :)
Revealing some imperfections in the roof insulation. Some enterprising insulation contactors go around neighborhoods taking such photos to share with homeowners and offer their services. People can be shocked to learn how much heat their roof loses compared to neighbors.
