Şirince (pronounced [ʃiˈɾindʒe]) is a village of 600 inhabitants in İzmir Province, Turkey, located about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) east of the town Selçuk.

Şirince was settled when Ephesus was abandoned in the 15th century but most of what one sees today dates from the 19th century. There is a story that the village was settled by freed Greek slaves who named the village Çirkince (meaning "Ugly" in Turkish) to deter others from following them. The village's name was changed to Şirince (meaning "Pleasant") in 1926 by the governor of Izmir Province.

In the 1990s the well-known Istanbul linguist Sevan Nişanyan and his wife Müjde Tönbekici settled in Şirince, which had been semi-derelict since the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. They were instrumental in having the village declared a national heritage site, and they undertook to renovate ruined historic houses using the original materials and building techniques of the village.

Several of the renovated village houses were eventually converted into a highly acclaimed Hotel de Charme by the name of the Nisanyan Houses.

After 2006 Nișanyan collaborated with Ali Nesin, a prominent mathematician and philanthropist, in developing the Nesin Mathematics Village near Şirince. Constructed strictly along the lines of traditional Aegean rural architecture, the village offered summer courses in college-level and postgraduate mathematics. It attracted prominent lecturers from around the world, accommodating over 300 resident students by summer 2013.

Nisanyan also built Thethre Madrasa (in Turkish Tiyatro Medresesi), a theater institute and actors’ retreat in the manner of mediaeval Muslim seminaries. The Nisanyan Memorial Library was completed in 2013. A philosophy school became operative on the grounds of Mathematics Village in 2014.

House sparrows are one of my favourite birds and the one I grew up with in the soot laden streets of Leeds.

This bird was instrumental in beginning my life long love of wildlife.

Today we can see them in their full finery and really appreciate these so often taken for granted little birds.

Shot for Our Daily Challenge :“Three”

Excerpt from chinatown.library.uvic.ca/index.htmlq%3Dlee_association.html:

The Lee Association is a clan association for individuals with the surname Lee. This clan traces its roots to the ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi (or Lao-tsu) the founder of Taoism. Lees had arrived in British Columbia since the late 1850s and had organized as a clan association in Victoria since the 1880s. The purpose of this clan association was to care for members who were sick or elderly, help resolve disputes, promote the welfare of members and help members adjust to Canadian society. Lees were instrumental in forming the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in 1884.

In 1909, with funds raised from members of the Lee clan, Lee Mong Kow, Lee Dan, Lee Dye and Lee Wing Yew purchased property for a meeting hall at 612-614 Fisgard Street on behalf of Lee Long Sai Tong, which then built two adjacent brick buildings in 1911. The association sold the western building in 1920, and in 1935 that building was bought by the Shon Yee Benevolent Association. The Lees kept the eastern building at 614 Fisgard, which had commercial space on the ground floor, offices on the second floor and the meeting hall on the third floor. In 1931, Lee Long Sai Tong merged with Li Dunzong Gongsuo, to become the Lee’s Benevolent Association (Lishi Gongsuo).

In the early twenty-first century, the Lee Association in Victoria still maintains its meeting hall at 614 Fisgard Street and has a membership of about 300. The Lee Association celebrates five festivals including Laozi’s birthday, the Duanwu (early summer) Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Christmas, and the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival. The association’s meeting room offers members a place to enjoy a game of mahjong, sing karaoke or play table tennis.

SAVE VENICE has been instrumental in refurbishing the church over a decade.

www.savevenice.org/project/church-of-san-sebastiano

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano is a 16th-century church located in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the Italian city of Venice. The church houses a cycle of paintings by the artist Paolo Veronese, as well as paintings by Tintoretto and Titian.

San Sebastiano is located on the site of a former hospice which was founded by the confraternity of Gerolimine fathers in 1393. Close to the hospice was an Oratory, built in 1396, and dedicated to Santa Maria Full of Grace and Justice. This was later expanded, and in 1468 was converted into a church dedicated to Saint Sebastian the martyr who was one of the chief patrons against plague and pestilence in Europe. The church is therefore regarded as one of the great Plague-Churches of Venice, built to temper divine punishment, as the plague was viewed in the Middle Ages.

Following a commission by Brother Bernardo Torlioni, the Verona-born painter Paolo Veronese spent three periods between 1555 and 1570 decorating various parts of the interior of San Sebastiano. This included paintings, ceiling canvases and frescoes on the nave and altar walls. Veronese also decorated parts of the sacristy and choir, as well as completing the organ decorations and a large altar piece.

Piano Through Glass!

This is SOOC with no cropping or software modification whatsoever. I considered cropping the right side of the image where the power outlet is but decided that maintaining the reflection continuity of the trees, lights and buildings off of the painting on the wall was more definitive.

This piano is on display for sale in a store in Winter Park, Fl. The shot was taken from the outside through the glass window showing the reflection of the building behind me and across the street. It's also showing trees and shrubs on the other side of the street as well as sunlight reflections shining directly off of the piano..

The Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club was founded on January 11, 1911, with 18 members by the Board of Trade. We were first called the Woman’s Civic Improvement Association. The club predated the incorporation of the city itself by two and a half months.

Among our proudest achievements is in the area of humanitarian concerns. When Ivy Stranahan, the “Mother of Fort Lauderdale,” was our president (1913-1916), she worked through the Florida Federation Of Women’s Clubs (FFWC), to advance the rights of all women and of Native Americans and African Americans. As chairperson of Indian Affairs for the FFWC Ivy had the support of the FLWC in helping to secure Seminole Reservations in the state of Florida.

In 1916, Ivy and Frank Stranahan donated a 135 x 100 lot to build our clubhouse, which was designed by the acclaimed architect August Geiger in the Mediterranean Revival Style. The building was dedicated in May 1917.

Annie Beck, president in 1924-25, was instrumental in the restoration of devastated Fort Lauderdale after the 1926 hurricane whereas our clubhouse served as an emergency shelter. Founding member of the city’s garden club, Annie planted a yellow trumpet tree (Tabebuia Caraiba) at her landmark home in 1939. A small memorial park in her name, planted in Tabebulias, can be found along Victoria Park Road. Her home, floated down New River to preserve its 20th-century bungalow architecture, is today at Middle River Terrace City Park.

In 1969 Virginia Young, president 1944-46, was elected city commissioner and then mayor of Fort Lauderdale. The daughter of a tugboat captain, Virginia served on the school board and so far, the only female mayor. She was a staunch supporter and member of the city’s Downtown Development Authority, fighting for the preservation of historic buildings.

During the 1970s, the club became charter members of Broward County Pioneer Days and also a charter member of Special Olympics of Broward County, which was founded to help mentally and physically challenged individuals find a more productive life.

In October 1982 our clubhouse was the first place winner in the city’s coveted Community Appearance Award. We sold 23 feet of our land to the city for the widening of Andrews Avenue. This money was used to renovate the building by adding a ramp for the handicapped, installing paddle fans, painting, building new front steps, and adding double front doors. The entrance hall floor was raised, eliminating a step for security reasons; the restrooms and the kitchen were updated to include a new dishwasher.

On January 11, 2011 we celebrated our 100th birthday. Our members no longer consist of city pioneers but are still keenly interested in making a recognizable difference in the educational, cultural, and humanitarian needs of the community and beyond. More importantly, shortly after our birthday celebration, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held with Mayor Jack Seiler, Vice Mayor Romney Rogers, Commissioner Bobby DuBose, and many club members in attendance on the newly renovated porch.

Architect Susan McClellan, Louis Friend of Friendly Construction, and Building Chair Eugenia Duncan Ellis proudly presented the completion of the Phase 1 renovations, which returned the building location to its original orientation and street address to 20 South Andrews Avenue.

Today, our clubhouse has received historic designation. We continue to work tirelessly to preserve this most significant building in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Now over 100 years of age, the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club continues their many missions, giving back to the community with a tag line of “a century of citizenship.”
