Antique medicine bottle dug up from a Victorian rubbish tip in York

Instant relief under the cool spray of water from a fire hydrant. That morning I was covering a 5K-15K Run. This was the highlight of the morning!

Also, that little boy is pretty tough. There was a lot of pressure coming out of the hydrant.

as we almost arrived at the airport, the rain stopped and the clouds parted into a towering mass i couldn't take my eyes off of. i felt instant relief, and took it as a sign we were going to have a safe flight.

"We all need a hug in the morning

And one at the end of the day

As many as possible squeezed in between

To keep life's troubles at bay

No matter wherever you ramble

Your problems be great or be small

It is my belief

For instant relief

A hug is the best cure of all"

Recently, switching off the head feels very difficult. As the same unpleasant thoughts frequently push their way into the foreground, they make finding a clear mind become a severe challenge.

In such times of overload, thoughts go round in circles. Yet there are moments when they seem to have gone for a short time. These are crucial because they momentarily cause the weight to fall off the shoulders, resulting in instant relief.

However, unpleasant thoughts will start to circle again very soon. Until there is a change, the short quiet moments of taking a time out allow baring with the situation and prepare for the better.

The then city police commissioner L Revannasiddaiah was instrumental in setting up the Hoysala mobile patrolling squads in July 1997.

The name of Hoysala was given by the then chief minister J H Patel. One Hoysala per station was given in addition to a police inspector’s jeep, as a public-private-partnership initiative. The idea behind the patrolling vehicle was to reach the victim within the golden hour and provide instant relief.

Day 27/365

Rosanna and I got back from London at about 4PM today having left early this morning. Every time I get back from London it's an instant relief. The countryside, the fresh air is far too soothing to make the city ever look good enough to be home.

Today's photograph is a moment of joy <3

This little girl made me cry today.

Okay it wasn’t really crying, it was more of a teary eye kind of thing. Hold on, don’t get all Mr. T on me you fucking assholes. You would too if this girl originated from your sperm and got to be around her everyday. Let me explain.

So my daughter had a 3rd grade concert to perform. This consisted of 3 songs for an extracurricular activity she is involved in called "Noontoons". And before it was her turn to go on stage and even more while she was on that very stage right about to perform, she must have tugged at every peer and teacher on her sight to show them something.

Show them what? Well me, of course!

She points in my direction saying “There!! Right there!! That’s my Daddy!! See, right there, with the tattoos, see! That’s my Daddy!”

That in itself made me blush red and giggle. But I guess it was something about taking that aforementioned innocence, combining it with how proud she was of something as simple as me just attending her little concert, and topping it off with her actual performance together with her occasional self conscience smiles looking right at me... and that did it! Watery eyes on the Daddy!

Don’t worry, I didn’t let anyone else see this display. Not even the babe!

For some reason, the physical act of crying or simply even getting watery eyes is forbidden for a bloke (I love getting all U.K. on yer ass with my hidden vocab). It takes you out of your element of being a man and leaves you vulnerable. Not a good place to be as a big strong Daddy.

I mean I don’t feel like a pussy talking about it or admitting it. What's the big deal anyhow?

Even Chloé goes to me the other day after she was crying over some bullshit, “Daddy, you never cry. I never saw you cry once. How come Daddies don’t cry?”

And it kind of threw me off for a second. I didn’t want to sound like I ever *DO* cry because that would make me seem weak, right? I’m the protector of the greater good, I am DADDY, hear me roar and pound my chest like the orangutan father guardian that I am. Right???

But on the other hand, I didn’t want to seem like I am one of those macho homophobic beer drinkin’ don’t-touch-me emotionless American men that I am so accustomed to seeing in my daily life. Right???

So what do I say to the kid?

“I have cried before. Just you haven’t SEEN Daddy. And only on, like ummm... special occasions?"

(like this fucking Noontoon concert thing apparently?).

And her response? “You are weird Daddy. But the good kind of weird! And you’re cool too!”

Instant relief. Not a pussy. Not a macho man. Just a cool weird Daddy. Whew! The kid couldn't have banged out a better answer.

The photo at hand? Genuine laughter on a genuinely awesome fantastic happy babestar.

A story from this past summer.

Deer & turkey…

With another successful motorhome trip under our belt it is time to sit back and edit the 600+ photos taken. I love taking pictures, always have…but it is the time spent at the computer with the raw file that I can truly count and connect with my blessings.

From the moment we decided to take the RV to the North woods of Minnesota several months ago, I have been excited, and a little nervous about this trip. Booking my first campground, where we would live for seven full days was a more than a little nerve racking. The Internet is full of horror stories and I for one would feel more comfortable glam-ping (camping in a motor home) next to the Munster’s than the Manson’s!

I found a small, privately owned “resort” that according to their website only took aged 60+ guests with no children. The sites were just a few dozen feet from the banks of Lake Pokegama and just south of our target of Grand Rapids Minnesota…it sounded perfect! I called them requesting a waiver of the age requirement stating that I am a spry 56, but look much older due to years of a lack of vegetable intake, global warming, improper tire rotation…your basic wear and tear. We were approved with open arms!

Arrived at our destination in a misty wind driven rain and 50+ degrees, we were greeted by the owners. Payment was made and we were taken to our sites. As soon as possible I started badgering the owners about my need to photograph wildlife and asked if they knew of any hotspots where I could capture some action. His response of “well, we see a lot of deer and turkey” hit me like a welterweights punch to the forehead…deer and turkey…we have that at home!

As soon as the rain lifted I grabbed my camera and headed down to the shore of the 6600+ acres of pure beauty that is Pokegama and looked for something, anything to photograph. Once I noticed the eagles nest several hundred yards down the bank I felt an instant relief of knowing that I could set up a lawn chair next to the RV and take eagle photos…not deer and turkey…all was right with the world!

In this photo the eaglets were preparing for flight by opening their wings in the wind and jumping up and down. It won’t be long now before they are soaring…yea, like eagles!

Note: The depth of this nest indicates a very successful breeding pair of eagles!

I've lost, I've lost my innocence

I've found my self-belief

And in a cup of loneliness

I've found instant relief

scab and plaster

this photo is so irrelevant but scab and plaster is probably one of my favorites from electra heart and i really wanted to do a photo inspired by it and i'm kind of obsessed with the catwang trend so here u go

i need friends who will let me dress them in stupid costumes so i can stop taking pictures of myself

Lola & Sakari beachside on Sunday. Lola is in her element at the beach. This is as deep as she ever goes but she loves to paddle and run free in the sand. Lola's shadow, Sakari is loving it too. This was only her third time at the beach and she loves it too. they had such a ball!

Poor Lola is a little worse for wear today. I could have almost used her eye as my red shot for today (although I couldn't bring myself to take a photo and she was suffering so much). We woke this morning to find her eye incredibly red and swollen and almost completely closed over due to an infection.

We took her immediately to the vet where she got some instant relief, an anti-inflammatory shot and some eye cream and several liver treats for being such a good girl. I hate it when they are suffering, but Lola knows we are helping her. Tonight it is looking better which is a relief.

I sat down and meditated this morning for the first time in quite a while. The relief from the rut I was in was almost instant, the knot in my back unwound and the cloud of malaise, tension and distraction started to lift as the sun shone through.

When I make sculptures I find it opens me up. I have to write down my thoughts within a few hours of finishing or else, like a flower at sunset, my petals curl up and I am closed again until the sun warms me up another day.

If I wait too long the flow of ideas and consciousness are gone right up to the point where I am unaware I had them in the first place.

I made this sculpture over a month ago and as is normal I involuntarily hooked up with my unconsciousness, the dam was breached and the river of thoughts poured out of me.

I never find it hard work writing what I do, it just tumbles out of me and seems to write itself. I simply need to listen to the dictation and jot down what I hear. But I waited too long and the lock gates slammed shut, the tide held back and from that moment I have been unable to write, create or do anything but spend all my energy trying to avoid myself.

Sometimes a day, a week, a month or even a couple of years pass before I stop and realise that there is even a well within me that needs to be unblocked and left to flow. When the dam wall is holding back the flood a general feeling of stress and anxiety pervades.

If at that point I don't take the chance to check into myself then instead of the sluice gates being opened every now and then to relieve the pressure, I issue a diktat to the little crew of men who maintain the dam to build it a little higher as that will hold back the flood. As the wall grows ever higher it soon becomes so tall that I can't even see there is flood water being held behind it. And soon after that I *forget* what the dam is even for, it's only purpose is to grow taller and taller.

There's a few things in my life that I've done that have given me clarity but many thousands that have had the opposite effect. All of the latter seek to distract me from my anxiety with the unfortunate consequence of being temporary, increasing the low level stress and malaise I experience and moving me ever further from any clarity at all to the point where the distraction techniques need to be even more ruthless and destructive, none of which deal with the root causes at all.

The result is inaction, procrastination and fear and an inability to even be aware that you are descending in a spiral further and further away from the life giving rays of the sun.

Eating crap, eating too much, drinking alcohol, taking drugs. Interacting with your laptop, iPad, smartphone all at once at the same time as watching telly, reading a book and flicking through a magazine. Spreading your attention all over the place, like a micro thin smear of marmite on toast, never concentrating on any one thing entirely whilst the grains of your life fall out through your fingers as you squeeze tighter and tighter.

As I said earlier, this morning I sat down and meditated for half an hour for the first time in a few years and within seconds there was instant relief. The dawn sun peeped over the horizon and the petals felt the first kiss of warmth. As the earth slowly rotated and the sliver became the hints of a disc the core of the flower began to thaw and the petals unfurled like a clenched fist gripping tight onto its tension and fear.

And then I felt it, like the flower bathed in sunlight, I could see clearly once again. The workers marched up to the rusty wheel at the base of the dam and armed with metal bars wrenched it open with a loud squeak until the water began to trickle through again.

As the flow increased a pool of these words gathered below the dam wall and here I am watching the whirlpool dictate to me and typing out all these sentences as they swirl round and around.

It is with palpable relief that I am writing this and feeling a moment of clarity, the knot in my back is still gone and I feel lighter than air.

I must grasp this opportunity wholeheartedly. All I need to do is sit down and meditate again tomorrow. It's all too easy to shut up the sluice gates again and forget myself entirely. What a terrible waste that is.

There's a couple of times a year where I feel the need to take action and for me they are around the cusp of spring and autumn. Perhaps there's something that has evolved within us that in times past drove us to prepare for the growing season and to harvest and prepare for the upcoming days of darkness.

In the last couple of weeks I've felt the oncoming of autumn and with it have been delivered a gift. A moment to pause and reflect and take stock and ponder on what is to come.

Over the last few years I have created much less in total after a long period of almost obsessive prolific-ness. But during those less productive times I still felt compelled to create something to mark these two times of the year. It feels organic and something physiological drawn from within.

Thank **** there's a bit of me deep down in my core somewhere that's in cahoots with nature and the real world! Even if I sometimes I lose it down the back of the sofa and forget I even had it until I go looking down there for some spare change, it comes knocking to wake me from my slumber and slaps me round the face before calling me 'idiot!'

Or else I may have spent another year becoming ever more blind, getting fatter and feeling like my only connection to what's out there is through the diddy screen on my smartphone, endlessly waiting for a bell to ring like a dog under the tutelage of Prof Pavlov.

How much more fulfilling, compelling and thrilling it is to start drooling when mother nature rings her bell instead. The flowers have turned to seed and the days are shortening and at last I can see the trees in the forest once again.

And not a single bloody moment too late in the day!

Confession: I once was a self mutilator...

I just realized that a year ago I was still cutting. Thankfully I found the motivation to "Stop the Bleeding" when I researched the organization TWLOHA.

A year ago, where the bandaids are, there would have been cuts in their place.

Self Mutilation is a serious disorder and a true problem with many young people in America.

I used to do it to find instant relief to the pain in my life...but now I'm stronger.

I could never thank the creators of TWLOHA enough for saving me from hurting myself.

FGR: I have won...the battle with myself.

Song of the Day: I'll Stand By You by The Pretenders

This looks really great BIG

First time for way too long I took my bicycle for a ride. Have been in the Grunewald which is part of Berlin, and felt an instant relief due to the silence and nature around me :)

Olympus OMD EM5

Olympus 75mm F1.8 - incredible sharpness!

The creators and I clearly share the same sense of humour.

I am so happy about this pic! My final goal is that of matching images to words I write. This concept has been in my head for ages. It revolves around the idea of carrying a burden and then, all of a sudden, letting it go through the wind. It is both a sensation of instant relief and utter freedom. In the comments you can see the "burden part". Hope you like it!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the life expectancy of Artificial Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros? Our artificial grass comes with a limited 8-year warranty, but the actual life expectancy is approximately 25 years depending on use.

Is Artificial Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros similar to indoor/outdoor carpet? Not at all. Our synthetic grass truly resembles natural grass. Not only does Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros look real, but many of our grass products feel real! The fiber length ranges from 1″ to 2.5″ depending on the product.

Is the sun harmful to Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros or make it fade? No. We don’t use a topical UV treatment; our fibers have built-in UV Inhibitors that we mix into the fiber/yarn resin. Often, turf made outside of the USA will have insufficient UV protection that can cause the fibers to break down prematurely. All turf by Lawn Pros is made from the highest quality materials from our plants in the USA. We have projects that we installed in the late 1980s that have no discernible signs of fading. In rare instances we have found that Energy Efficient Windows can cause magnified reflections that may cause synthetic turf to melt if it is in the direct path of that reflection. The magnification from some Energy Efficient Windows is so powerful that it can melt sprinkler heads, kiddie pools and other plastics. Call the manufacture and ask them how to remedy this problem if you do have Energy Efficient Windows. Tinting the windows is usually sufficient.

Is artificial synthetic grass hotter than my natural lawn? Yes, all artificial synthetic grass is warmer than natural grass in the sun, it just doesn’t have the natural cooling capacity of natural grass. It will not get as hot as beach sand, but it will be warmer than natural grass, which contains water. There’s always a trade-off for the benefits such as no mowing, no watering, no weeding, no chemical applications, easier dog clean up, no mud, etc. The only real trade-off is that the surface of synthetic grass will be hotter than natural grass. But, we have never had a complaint that it was so hot that it burned a person or pet. The darker green colored fiber absorbs more sun than our lighter shades of green. On really hot days, take these precautions: We recommend having at least one portion of your lawn area shaded for instant relief. If the temperature gets hot, it’s always nice to have a little relief area until it cools down again. Also, you can spray the artificial synthetic grass with water right before you play or walk on your synthetic grass on a really hot day. Additionally, you can always wear some type of footwear. Another thing that can be done to lower heat on artificial synthetic grass is adding a light color of approved silica sand or other infill that is light in color. Many people find that the extra heat doesn’t bother them as long as they keep moving. But, even if these precautions are not exercised, hot weather has not kept people or pets off of synthetic grass.

How much does Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros cost? The average cost is between $2.50 and $4.00 per square foot, installation not included.

How Does Artificial Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros stay in place once it is installed? An infill material (usually sand) is brushed into the top of the grass that adds to the weight of the installed grass and acts as a ballast. Additionally, the edges are pinned down with our 7″ non-corrosive spikes which are spaced approximately 3′ apart.

How does Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros affect the environment?Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros is eco-friendly: It eliminates the need for water. It also eliminates the need for damaging chemicals that leak into the soil (fertilizers, pesticides, weed kill, etc.) Additionally Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros is recyclable and is available with an eco-friendly infill material.

What about pets? What happens to dog urine and waste? Dogs adore our grass, they think it’s real! When hosed off or when it rains, Dog urine is not a problem as it flushes through the turf’s drainage holes and drainage system. Solid waste is cleaned in the same manner as natural grass. Artificial Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros will not stain. For heavy usage areas, such as dog kennels and doggy day care facilities, we use a different aggregate blend for the base below the artificial grass. We also offer anti-odor products like Odor Eradicator (a topical spray) and Synthetic Turf Deodorizer (a microporous mineral).

What happens to Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros if a dog tries to dig through it? Although we can’t guarantee that a dog won’t chew through or peel back the edges of the turf, it’s extremely rare. Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros has been installed in hundreds of residential and commercial dog runs around the world. Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros is extremely durable and almost impossible to rip or tear due to our double-coated backing. There are exceptions; We recommend putting extra border stakes around the perimeter of the dog run to discourage dogs from digging. Another option is building sub-surface composite wood border around the perimeter of the area that you can affix to the grass.

What type of maintenance should I expect with Artificial Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros? An occasional brooming to stand the grass fibers up is recommended but not necessary. Debris like twigs and leaves can be easily removed with a leaf blower or rake.

How is Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros Installed?Existing sod must first be removed. Next, a base is created using a special blend of crushed rock (2″ to 4″ depth), then smoothed and compacted. The artificial grass is then rolled onto the surface of the base and seamed together if necessary (turf widths are 15′.) Then the infill material is is spread over the top of the grass using a fertilizer spreader and brushed to the bottom of the artificial grass. The grass product type and the type of use determines the type and amount of infill. The infill can be sand, rubber crumb, or our eco-friendly (or a combination of the above.) Installation for synthetic putting greens is similar but there are additional layers of base materials that need to be thoroughly compacted.

What about drainage? Drainage is very similar to natural grass. Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros has perforations (holes) in the backing that allow water to drain into the blended rock base below the artificial turf. Different blends of crushed rock are used for different applications, depending on permeability needs.

How does the cost of Artificial Synthetic Grass in Colorado compared to installing a natural lawn? When compared to installing a sprinkler system, topsoil, the price of sod, combined with frequent watering, mowing, weeding and fertilizing, the cost synthetic grass hits a break-even point in 3 to 5 years. You can minimize your investment if you include landscaping rocks, mulch beds and xeriscape elements with your synthetic grass. The contrast of landscape rock with Synthetic Grass looks fantastic!

How do I choose which type of Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros is best for my needs? We have the largest selection of synthetic grass in the industry. A Lawn Pros representative can help you choose the right type of synthetic grass for you. The numbers in the names of our artificial grass for lawns refers to the density/thickness of the product – the higher the number the thicker the product.

Why should I choose Lawn Pros over another artificial grass company? Not all synthetic grass is created equal!! Lawn Pros has been making the highest quality artificial synthetic grass since 1987. All Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros has undergone many years of extensive research and development, including extensive stability and wear-resistance testing. Most importantly, all Lawn Pros products are lead-free (not all artificial grass companies can say that!) Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros is made in the USA, we stand behind our third-party warranty and have done so since 1987. We are the only company that controls the manufacturing from resins through final installation.

I’ve heard that lead has been found in artificial grass, is there lead in Grass by Lawn Pros? There is no lead or any other heavy metals in Synthetic Grass by Lawn Pros products. Lawn Pros has the most stringent testing in the industry.

Then the infill material is is spread over the top of the grass using a fertilizer spreader and brushed to the bottom of the artificial grass.

It's a murky escape I'm making out Longley Mountain Road, somewhere no one goes this time of night. There are few visual memories that move me more distinctly and intensely than a version of this one. Driving home on some dim and sleepy evening, Dad in the driver's seat and me in the back – and I'm watching out the windshield where we're going. Every rise on the dirt road catches the lower edge of the headlights, leaving a black hole shadow on the leeside. For a few brief seconds, I could almost believe that it's a cliff edge we're about to go off. Do I really think so? Probably not. But that quick rise of terror and instant relief sticks with me. Growing up, I learned to love that suspense and release. Every winding road has it, every desperate passage and twisting turn. You just gotta know what's next, and then, you gotta know it again. Can't look away or turn back till it's over.

When I started taking pictures, all I had for inspiration were my childhood memories. Some of those showed up in my mother's photographs, but for all the rest, I wanted to remember why I loved to look. I was a watcher from the start, either through car windows, on the outskirts of family gatherings, or in gloom of my sleepless bedroom. When I was too young to read, a common pastime was swivelling my father's easy chair to the living room window and watching passing cars. The pace was sporadic where we lived, just a handful an hour, but that ordinary fascination seemed to draw me just the same. Because my work revolves so much around history, I'm often thought of as nostalgic. I'm not in reality, and don't see the past as a refuge. It's just a context, and means only as much as my ability to bring it forward. You'll never find me hiding out in then. Now is all I've got.

If there was anything that ever lessened the pain of going to the dentist or doctor it was the delight at finding one or more yellow edged magazines in the tatty pile on the table in the corner of the waiting room. A small pile of National Geographic magazines brought instant relief from the fear and pain of what was about to happen, and between its covers I escaped to the far side of the world, exploring new landscapes and sights at every turn of the page. I always saw the National Geographic as an encyclopaedia of the world; the most fascinating magazine ever. It bred in me a taste for unlimited travel, endless exploration.

I never saw it as a photographic magazine despite the many camera advertisements it carried.

Now I see it differently. It's a great travel and exploration magazine. And a great photographic journal.

What a thrill it would be to combine both loves, travel and photography. Some lucky souls get to do it. For now I shall have to content myself with the fact that someone with 'ng' in their email address is interested in featuring one of my photos in one of their esteemed magazines.

Steve and I were out walking during the Summer when I spied these beautiful, wild columbines and stinging nettles growing alongside a dry-stone wall.

The columbines looked so delicate amongst the hardy weeds, The only time I really notice nettles is when I suddenly feel a stinging sensation as I brush against them with my bare legs. But, to be sure, there are 'dock leaves' - at least that's what we call them in these parts - growing close by.

Dock leaves are a sworn analgesic proof against nettle stings. (That is what our folks taught us). You need only pick one and rub the crushed leaf, vein-side down, across the affected part, to effect instant relief.

To be honest, I have always found this to be true.

One of nature's little wonders.

Whenever i'm having neck or back pain, I strap on the traction device and voia...instant relief. Its a strap that you attach to our head, and it connects to the door mounted bracket via a rope, and on the other side of the rope is a weighted water bag (12 lbs. of water in mine). You sit there for 10 or 15 minutes while the weight of the water bag pulls your head upward, which stretches out your spine. Love it.

This traction device single handedly saved me from needing surgery for a herniated disc I had 3 years ago. After using this device every night for a few weeks, the bulge in my disc was gone.

Pardon the mess around me. I'm in the process of cleaning...figuring out what stuff I want to keep, sell, donate, or toss out.

The udta in the title of Udta Punjab does not just refer to the momentary ‘highs’ experienced by the characters while on narcotics; it also signifies the optimism that marks the way of life there, irrespective of the circumstance. The film, apart from its portrayal of the drug menace afflicting the adolescents in the State, was one of the rare attempts at portraying authentically the numbed aspirations of the people living there. It did show the green fields, the Pakistan border, the somewhat-broken houses but did not romanticise them. It also showed the real problems like unemployment among youth, the fighting spirit of the people, the desire to fight the drug menace among them, and the infectious optimism that accompanies that desire.

The movie has also brought some welcome focus to Punjabi cinema. Despite being part of Indian cinema for 81 years — the first Punjabi movie Pind Di Kudi was released in 1935, just four years after the first talkie Alam Ara — it has been treated as a poor cousin of the giant that is Bombay industry. Despite Punjabi being a language spoken by around 100 million people around the world, the industry has produced a little more than 1,000 movies so far.

Having produced a lion’s share of talent working in Bombay cinema — including the first family, the Kapoors — the contribution of Punjabi culture to Indian cinema is undeniable. However, the Punjabis, especially the Sardars, have also been at the receiving end of some of the worst stereotyping in Hindi movies. Hence, it came as an instant relief to see an intense but understated Sartaj (Diljit Dosanjh) inUdta Punjab.

Having acted in some of the most successful of recent Punjabi films, Diljit is a superstar figure in the State. One of the displays of his superstardom is perhaps through his character Jaggi Singh, who hails from Samrala, in Sardarji. He plays a seasoned ghost-hunter summoned to London to deal with a lady spirit. The tropes employed — like Jaggi’s friendly humour; his almost supernatural ability to identify and strike a chord with bhoots and chudails (ghosts); his ability to break into impromptu song and dance sequences to impress the lady characters; the punch dialogues — bring a certain heroic status to the character. It is clear that the director Rohit Jugraj Chauhan did not want to just make a successful film, he wanted to build a franchise.

The trailer of Sardarji-2 — the movie released on June 24 — takes the good-hearted Jaggi’s status one step forward. Here, there are not one but many of his star versions. The show-stealer in the trailer clearly is the dialogue that bookends it — Sardar chaahe Brigadier hon, chahe gatekeeper; Sardar chaahe Pradhan Mantri hon, chaahe kulfiyan bech raha hon, ‘Sardar’ naal ji zaroor lagainda(Whether a Sardar is a Brigadier or a gatekeeper; whether he is a Prime Minister or a Kulfi-seller, never forget to add a ‘ji’ while referring to him as a ‘Sardar’). I could imagine an entire theatre bursting into applause and cheer on hearing this. Finally, there is a superhero figure among the Sardars! The twoSardarji movies also show that the cinema of Punjab has begun exorcising the ghosts of partition and the separatist movement of the 1980s to create its own sub-culture of indigenous comedies.

Producer Gunbir Singh Sidhu, whose company White Hill Productions, has made some of the biggest Punjabi hits over the years, speaks with a certain justifiable pride when he says, “Many of the successful movies made in Punjabi in the last 5 years have been produced by us. The trend started with Jatt and Juliet, then continued with its sequel, Punjab 1984 — which won a National Award — and Sardarji [all starring Dosanjh].” According to Wikipedia, Sardarji has made nearly 50 crores, which makes it a blockbuster in Punjabi cinema. Its sequel, having made around Rs.13 crore in the opening weekend, is catching up. Gunbir adds: “We have sold the rights of Jatt and Juliet and its second part to Tamil and Telugu producers.”
