Once upon a time on the same side, in the same game. And why'd you have to go, have to go and throw water on my flame?

Experimenting with photoshop once again. However, flickr sharpening ruined this :(

So this week's topic was 'Insecurities'. Firstly i thought i would capture about what i didn't like about myself or something like that, but then my stepfather said that insecurities, from his eyes, are things that surround us that we are not happy with at all. So here it is, the final idea inspired by him and her. :)

If there's any mistake or any piece of advice you would like to give me, please do, i'm new at this, so constructive comments are really important.

Plus, i really need to learn how to make expansions! Photoshop tutorials, i'm on my way.

So how have you been guys?

I won't be going to school until Monday :D it has given us holidays, thank God.

And i got a Beatles poster<3 love it. My wall is now messed up since we're going to print some stuff for the last class of the photography course and we'll take advantage of it by printing all kinds of pictures.

My wall will be full of pictures! :D

Tito greets you. He is sleeping with a heart-shaped cushion he always tries to take out from my bed. <3

Don't forget to comment a topic for next week!

sajdklghdfghadlfkg

This is my first shot in the challenge..

I'm still insecure in photography and with this challenge, that's why i'm hiding behind the door.. ;)

"...you literally hand them the razor with a map of where to cut deepest and most painfully on your heart and soul."

- Sherrilyn Kenyon, Devil May Cry

You don't have to date someone to risk getting your heart broken. Any time you love someone—family member, friend, anyone—you risk getting your heart broken. But the crazy thing is, is that it's worth it. Loving someone is one of the greatest gifts you can give—and receive. Being hurt like that can be so painful. You feel so many things. Regret, sadness, sometimes anger, insecurity, doubt. Then you aren't sure who to trust and you're scared everyone else is going to hurt you eventually. Moving on is hard. You learn though. And eventually the pain lessens, and you remember all of the great things that happened between the two of you. You have a choice though. You have to decide if you're going to resent that person and blame them for everything, or you can forgive them and appreciate the times you had together, realize that it's a part of life; people come and go. Just because someone hurts you doesn't mean your relationship with them was a waste. Then sometimes you have a choice to let them back in to your life or not. You have the choice to hand them that razor again and chance having them either hurt you all over again or love you more than they ever did before. That's not something we can predict. And that's what makes the choice so hard every single time.

You're insecure

Don't know what for

You're turning heads when you walk through the door

Don't need make up

To cover up

Being the way that you are is enough

Everyone else in the room can see it

Everyone else but you

[Chorus]

Baby you light up my world like nobody else

The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed

But you when smile at the ground it aint hard to tell

You don't know

You don't know you're beautiful

If only you saw what I can see

You'll understand why I want you so desperately

Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe

You don't know

You don't know you're beautiful

Oh oh

But that's what makes you beautiful

So c-come on

You got it wrong

To prove I'm right I put it in a song

I don't why

You're being shy

And turn away when I look into your eyes

Everyone else in the room can see it

Everyone else but you

[Chorus]

Baby you light up my world like nobody else

The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed

But you when smile at the ground it aint hard to tell

You don't know

You don't know you're beautiful

If only you saw what I can see

You'll understand why I want you so desperately

Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe

You don't know

You don't know you're beautiful

Oh oh

But that's what makes you beautiful

[Bridge]

Nana Nana Nana Nana

Nana Nana Nana Nana

Baby you light up my world like nobody else

"I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."

— Marilyn Monroe

San Francisco, CA

One of humanity’s greatest mistakes was putting a camera in the hand of everybody. Not only did it convince an entire generation of people that their banal activities were art, it allowed them to gorge themselves on bottomless portions of attention-whoring. Nowadays, the average gaggle of teens spends half their day taking pictures of one another. They spend the other half uploading them to their various social-media accounts, and compulsively checking back for “likes.” To make matters worse, these pictures are completely bankrupt of even a crumb of originality.

Beautiful but insecure it seems. We saw this peacock today at Saltwell Park, Gateshead in Pets Corner. It was so pretty but spent the whole time spreading and shaking its feathers and strutting at the other birds (no other peacocks, a variety including doves) in there - when all of the other birds were just ignoring it! It repeatedly backed one into a corner as if to try and intimidate it but the other bird just continued minding its own business. A major inferiority complex maybe?

[A volte sono io,

sono forte

a volte sono debole

a volte basta una parola

una sensazione e….

non sono più io

paure, debolezze, insicurezze.]

I admit it is fun to go to town in Photoshop and blur and brush and spot heal and clone and re-color and burn and what-have-you, but this picture isn't me.

And I would be uncomfortable if anyone thought it was.

We all have our insecurities and imperfections. Embracing them is the hard part.

Graph by Tony Piro. Please keep it mind that it shows a correlation, not causation.

It is a very similar curve to that found in a Pew survey of 45,000 people globally (and includes Africa).

In his book, The Moral Landscape, Sam Harris offers a commentary on the U.S. as outlier:

“While most developed societies have grown predominantly secular, with the curious exception of the United States, orthodox religion is in florid bloom throughout the developing world.

Religiosity is strongly coupled to perceptions of societal insecurity. In addition to being the most religious of developed nations, the United States also has the greatest economic inequality. The poor tend to be more religious than the rich, both within and between nations.

And on almost every measure of societal health, the least religious countries are better off than the most religious.” (p.146)

But there may be more to it. Americans believe all kinds of crazy stuff, and it begs the question whether it correlates with insecurities as well.

In a class I co-taught with Larry Lessig, we used a pre-print of Posner’s book, Catastrophe: Risk and Response, which relates the following statistics on American adults:

• 39% believe astrology is scientific (astrology, not astronomy).

• 33% believe in ghosts and communication with the dead.

Ponder that for a moment. One out of every three U.S. adults believes in ghosts. Who knows what their kids think!

People’s willingness to believe untruths relates to the ability of the average person to reason critically about reality. Here are some less amusing statistics on American adults:

• 49% don’t know that it takes a year for the earth to revolve around the sun.

• 67% don't know what a molecule is.

• 80% can't understand the NY Times Tuesday science section.

Posner concludes: “It is possible that science is valued by most Americans as another form of magic.”

Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me

Lying on the floor, surrounded, surrounded

Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?

Just a little late, you found me, you found me

Ever since I was about twelve years old, I've suffered from major self image issues. Even when my body is "skinny" for me, I still feel too curvy to be pretty. Of course, the amazing thing about this 365 Day self portrait project is that I've grown more comfortable in my own skin. And I have so many of you to thank for that. Not in any direct way, but really, when you become so immersed into the 365 community, you sort of go along for the ride with other photographers as they conquer their own self image issues. Or you watch enviously as other photographers bare themselves in ways you might cringe at, all with a sort of "yeah, this is me, you got something to say about it?" attitude. So in getting to know all of you, I believe I've made some big strides in conquering my largest insecurity, which is my own body.

It helps to be a part of such a supportive group of photographers who are also tackling the challenge of getting healthy and losing weight. The 52 Fit group has really helped me to stay on track with my resolution to make 2010 the year that I took back my life, lost the weight, created new healthy habits, and became gorgeous in my own eyes again. So thank you to all of you who are involved with 52 Fit.

As I draw closer to the end of my 365, I've been starting to wonder what comes next. Do I immediately dive back in for a year 2? Do I take a break and focus on my wedding? What if I stop shooting a photo every day and somehow lose what I've learned up to this point? What if I commit to another year and fail miserably? These are all questions I don't have the answers to yet. So bear with me while I mull all of this over in the coming weeks.

This little snake wasn't the least bit scared of me, nor I of it. We just observed one another for a short while and had an interesting visit.

Not too long ago, Colombians fled to Venezuela and elsewhere to avoid the escalating violence and insecurity associated to their country’s drug wars and guerillas groups. Today, it is Venezuelans that have been fleeing to Colombia. With an economic hyperinflation and a repressive government policy, Venezuela is facing a food shortage and health crisis, among many other challenges preventing social welfare and safety. On a daily basis, hundreds of Venezuelans cross the border of San Antonio de Táchira in Venezuela to the city of San José de Cúcuta, Colombia. They go there to look for work opportunities or simply to find safety. There, their work typically consists of carrying out odd-jobs or manual labor to purchase basic goods such as food and medicine.

Trayecto — Fase 1. La entrega. Fase 2. A través. Fase 3. Inclusión (Trajectory— Phase 1. The Remittance. Phase 2. Through. Phase 3. Inclusion), a new work by Teresa Margolles, is developed after the artist’s fieldwork in this border region. She has traveled there on three occasions, first, in 2017 at the invitation of Bienal Sur in Colombia. During her time in Cúcuta, Margolles engaged with the sites and subjects of forced migration. In one of several actions there, she hired Venezuelans to carry stones across the river, which geopolitically divides the border; in another action, she hired them to knit their narratives into fabrics stained with the local soil. During these exchanges, their manual labor was remunerated, and was always accompanied by conversations with, and documentation by, the artist.

At Witte de With, the exhibition A new work by Teresa Margolles consists of a simple action: the six large windows of the gallery space are smudged, rather than cleaned, using shirts stained by the soil and sweat of over one-hundred Venezuelan men that Margolles hired in Cúcuta. This performance at the gallery is staged for the first month of the exhibition; during this time period, the shirts used are each progressively encased in a series of cement blocks, made on site. The initials of the names of each hired worker are then engraved into each sculptural element. Together, these elements progressively form an installation in the space alluding to spatial dynamics set forth by the border-crossers in that region. Also included in the galleries is a portrait of one the participants of Margolles’ action in Cúcuta.

A new work by Teresa Margolles comes from the artist’s long-standing and profound engagement with victims of violent crimes in sites where, for the artist, mending a social fabric that is torn invokes attention and involves care. In earlier works by Margolles, such as her installation In the Air (2003) and her exhibition What Else Could We Talk About? (2009), the artist has used materials like cloths and water employed to cleanse the bodies of victims or sites of violence. In other artworks, such as Lote Bravo (2005), she draws soil from the ground where victims of feminicide were found to create her sculpture installations.

The latter is one of a number of works the artist has made in and about Ciudad Juarez in México, a city that borders the United States and that welcomed numerous migrants from the South of the country as the workforce to the new industries based there since the early 1990s. However, the city significantly suffered the effects of the war on drugs in the past decades. As with Lote Bravo, A new work by Teresa Margolles emerges from field-work in a geopolitical border region where social displacement and precarity is latent. These works also share the proposition of sculpture to encounter an occasion “of being” in the presence of absent testimony.
