ECHO has been funding food distributions since 2010, focusing mainly on people displaced by a series of consecutive armed clashes in Yemen’s north west. In the past year people displaced by armed clashes in Yemen’s south have also been included.

“What we have forgotten is that thoughts and words are conventions, and that it is fatal to take conventions too seriously. A convention is a social convenience, as, for example, money ... but it is absurd to take money too seriously, to confuse it with real wealth ... In somewhat the same way, thoughts, ideas and words are "coins" for real things.”

For this year’s Hunger Awareness event, sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Hunger Awareness Team, keynote speakers Jackie Massoner and Kesi Marcano discussed factors affecting local and global food insecurities.

One screw is missing--that must be the problem.

Students and campus ministers came together to discuss food insecurity in Africa over a shared meal.

Chad was one of the countries worst hit by the 2012 food and nutrition crisis in the Sahel. Despite a better harvest at the end of 2012, the food security situation is again deteriorating due to abnormally high food prices across the region.

An estimated 63 per cent of the population in Northern Bahr al Ghazal is experiencing severe food insecurity, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report. The situation is particularly bad in Aweil West and Aweil South counties, where the exhaustion of household food stocks and growing dependence on financially inaccessible markets have left the population facing Emergency levels of food

insecurity.

The Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU presented their Post Gu assessment in early September 2014. The situation has further deteriorated, due to a combination of drought, surging food prices and armed conflict. Over 1 million people are now in crisis and face acute food insecurity, up by 20 percent from 857, 000 just six months ago. The number of acutely malnourished children is 218,000, of whom 43,800 are severely malnourished and at immediate risk of death.

Mogadishu Internally Displaced People (IDP) remain in emergency despite reasonable humanitarian access. The recent influx of newly displaced people into the overcrowded and under-served Afgoye Corridor (also known as K7-13) is one of the reasons. The additional 10M EUR that European Commission’s Humanitarian aid and Civil Protection department ((ECHO) has made available are being contracted quickly and non-governmental and United Nations partners are using the funds for scaling up their response. ©Abdullahi Abdisalan/ EU/ ECHO

Einstein's down on the beach staring into the sand

Cause everything he believes in is shattered

What you fear in the night in the day comes to call anyway-ay

We all get burned as:

One more sun comes sliding down the sky

One more shadow leans against the wall

The world begins to disappear

The worst things come from inside here

I have been feeling sick for the past few days due to lack of sleep. Donnie texted me today to reschedule our stuff exchange to saturday. eh... I hope i feel half-way decent after a good night's rest to tackle that awkwardness.

I'm actually going to go soak myself in a hot bath and read some new books Nick recommend I read :)

the beach was pretty today. this is one of my favorite places to watch the sunset, North Gulf Access. I went by myself, I needed to learn to be alone and by myself. I have a deep fear of being alone, and not needed. this was a refreshing sunset.

Sub-Saharan Africa is not on track to achieve a single Millennium Development Goal. It is the only region in the world where malnutrition, a product of food insecurity, is on the rise. Food insecurity in Africa has many complex causes, including HIV/AIDS, climate change, environmental degradation, conflict, a huge increase in population size, and debt.
