These large flies are predatory on other insects. I think this is a female. Possibly Promachus hinei, Asilidae. Central IL, Summer 2012.

The only live stick insects I've ever seen before were ones kept in a tank in the school science lab. I'm not sure whether they occur in the wild in the UK - it may be too cold and wet for them here; not a problem they face in Catalonia.

 

Apparently the common Spanish name for stick insect is insecto palo, which literally means "stick insect"!

Built by local children and part of the site's new use for wildlife conservation in the area only accessible by land train.

According to wilko’s this insect medley is wildly tasty, that is to birds. Bought to feed the smaller birds during the snow the unit just states contains insects and comes from China. . . . .
