I took this picture on the fringe of the Austrian National Day celebrations at the overcrowded Heldenplatz in Vienna last Wednesday. The Volksgarten is adjacent to Heldenplatz and was also quite crowded. The whole 1st district was full with people, who obviously have a strong need to catch up after the years of corona restrictions.

Yesterday, when I was leaving the Albertina Art Museum, where I had taken many photos, I saw this: the Archduke Albrecht Monument and the rear of the Vienna State Opera in the wonderful light of the Blue Hour. Taking pictures was an absolute must then!

Vienna's luxury shopping street Kohlmarkt one week before Christmas Eve. The fourth wave of coronavirus with the Delta variant is subsiding and the incidence figures are visibly falling. But experts are predicting a next wave of unimagined proportions because of the new variant Omicron. We have to expect it from January, they say.

The Hochstrahlbrunnen on the Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna is a large fountain, which "was built to celebrate the construction of the first water pipeline from the Styrian alps to Vienna in 1873. In the decades before, the water supplies from various springs in the Vienna Woods and through the Wien River had proved to be insufficient for the ever-increasing population of Vienna.

[...] The pipeline was a major breakthrough for the modernisation of Vienna that took place in the second half of the 19th century [...]. Ever since 1873, the Viennese are very proud of their Alpine spring-water from the tap." Vienna's tap water is indeed highly palatable and possibly the best tap water in the world.

"When the project was finished, the engineer Anton Gabrielli - who ran the building company in charge with the construction of the pipeline - donated the considerable sum of 200,000 Kronen to construct the Hochstrahlbrunnen. Some 20 years later, an even higher sum was donated to illuminate the fountain artificially - in 1906, a remarkable attraction for the Viennese. Today, the Hochstrahlbrunnen is still lit up at night, shining in blue, red and green." www.tourmycountry.com/austria/hochstrahlbrunnen-fountain.htm

The Musikverein is a concert hall in the 1st district of Vienna. It is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic. Its "Great Hall" (Großer Saal) is considered one of the most beautiful and acoustically best halls in the world.

The plans for the concert hall were designed by Theophil Hansen, a Danish-Austrian master builder and architect of classicism and historicism. The building was inaugurated on 6 January 1870.

Unfortunately, such appeals are unlikely to persuade the belligerent Russian fascists to end the criminal war against Ukraine.

The Ferstel Passage aka Freyung Passage is an elegant shopping arcade in Palais Ferstel. It links the Herrengasse with Freyung, a triangular historic square, in Vienna's 1st district Innere Stadt.

Palais Ferstel was originally built for the Austrian National Bank and stock exchange in 1856-1860. The architect was Baron Heinrich von Ferstel, who is considered an outstanding Viennese representative of historicism. The building has echoes of the Venetian and Florentine early Renaissance.

This classicist building, built from 1819 to 1823 by architect Peter von Nobile, serves primarily as a decorative source of shade and as a backdrop for group photos. Other purposes are beyond my knowledge.
