Beautiful landscaping at Tenryu-ji for a truly of zen experience! The temple has a long and chequered history which is really too much in detail to list here- save to say it was once a palace which was subsequently converted into a temple complex. On the eastern boundary of the temple grounds lie two gates: Chokushi Gate (chokushimon) and Middle Gate (chūmon), from which the path to the temple itself leads west. Generally, Zen temple grounds are designed so that they face the south, with major buildings aligned along the north-south axis. Tenryū-ji's layout is an exception to this principle. Sub-temples line both sides of the path, which leads to the lecture hall. There are numerous buildings behind the lecture hall, such as large abbey (ōhōjō), the small abbey (kohōjō), the kitchen, the meditation hall, and Tahō-den hall, however, each of these is modern reconstruction. Of course these are probably some of those buildings in the complex which are out of bounds for visitors, (Kyoto, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

A sculpture garden outside the Tenryu-ji Zen temple main entrance. After walking several hundred metres inside the Tenryu-ji temple grounds, I came across a large building with this delightful rock garden in front of it, The figures appear to be monks of some sort, judging from their robes and the blessing posture of one of them.Quite in keeping with the temple aura I think. The building in question turned out to be a large traditional restaurant, set just opposite to the temple main inner entrance. As with most traditional eateries in Japan, the restaurant was totally empty, the surging crowds of tourists outside notwithstanding. Well, I got my shot, time to move on now. (ôm) , [Skt.,=yes, so be it] for Hindus and Buddhists, a mystic word or mantra. Om is regarded as the syllable of the supreme Reality and is sometimes called “the mother of mantras.” It is often found at the beginning of prayers, mantras, and scriptures as a word of invocation and adoration. In Hinduism its three Sanskrit phonemes (transliterated a, u, and m) symbolize the triad of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer, or the three levels of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. In Buddhism it is often understood as symbolizing the true “empty” character of reality, as that truth has been communicated by various historical Buddhas, celestial Buddhas, and, directly, by the true character of reality itself (see sunyata).
