The Old Library Building is located on a sloping lot on the southeast corner of 8th Street & Georgia Avenue in Downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. As was true throughout the country at the turn of the century, Carnegie money initiated the building of a public library in Chattanooga. The first library in the city was established in 1867. There was no building designed specifically for library use until Carnegie offered $50,000 if the city provided a suitable lot and promised an annual appropriation of ten percent of the amount of the gift. The city met the requirements and in 1903 construction began. Atlanta architect W. T. Bowling was employed to design the library but was soon discharged and replaced by Chattanooga architects, Hunt and Bearden. On April 15, 1904, the cornerstone was laid, and the formal opening took place on July 17, 1905. The library cost a total of $65,000, including $15,000 for the lot purchased from the Catholic Church, $33,000 for the building itself, and $17,000 for furnishings. In 1940, the library was moved to a building adjoining the campus of the University of Chattanooga, now the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. As years passed the future of the old building was not good until the late 1960's when it was purchased and renovated by the present occupant. This private individual preservation effort has received acclaim both locally and nationally.

Architecturally, the Old Library Building is one of the finer early structures remaining in Downtown Chattanooga and is a building having strong nostalgic associations for many citizens and the present owner. It is a compact structure consisting of a raised basement of rough stone and two upper floors built of marble in the Neo-Classical style. The main entrance is surmounted by an arched window flanked by columns in the Ionic order. The frieze is plain and the cornice is carved with a modified egg and dart design. Also, when the present owner purchased the building in the late 1960's, he also acquired the property to the south on Georgia Avenue. The non-descript structure which butted against the library was replaced by a parking area designed to be in harmony with the library building. The line defining the base of the first floor of the library was extended to create the roof line of the parking lot. These details can be seen in the lower right corner of the photograph above. And finally, some simple vertical ironwork encloses the parking area.

The Old Library Building (or the Carnegie Building) was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on March 14, 1973 for its architecture and close ties to the community. All of the information above was found on the original documents submitted for listing consideration and can be viewed here:

The Great Northern Hotel, a large, two-storeyed brick and timber hotel, was erected in 1900 - 1901 for Townsville timber firm Wilson Hart & Company, owners of the site. It was designed by prominent Townsville architects Tunbridge and Tunbridge.

The application to build the Great Northern Hotel appears to have been initiated following the State government's announcement in 1900 of plans to erect a new Townsville railway terminus on land off Blackwood Street beside Ross Creek, which would bring the terminus closer to the eastern end of Flinders Street and to the retail and business heart of Townsville. Almost immediately (June 1900), applications were lodged to erect hotels on two corners of the nearby intersection of Flinders and Blackwood Streets - one being the Great Northern, the other replacing an existing hotel (possibly the Newmarket). Both applicants intended to erect first-class hotels, both argued that Townsville suffered a lack of first-class accommodation - the hotels erected during the boom of the 1880s no longer offering the level of comfort and facilities required by turn-of-the-century travellers - and both applications were approved provided the buildings were erected within the time specified (9 months in each case). Only the Great Northern came to fruition, and when opened early in 1901, was marketed as the hotel closest to the new Townsville terminus of the Great Northern Railway - hence the name of the hotel.

The architects, Tunbridge & Tunbridge, designed a first class brick and timber hotel of 36 bedrooms, estimated to cost between £8,000 and £9,000. The Tunbridge brothers (Walter Howard and Oliver Allan) had entered into partnership in Townsville in 1887, and soon developed a substantial North Queensland architectural practice with offices in Charters Towers and later Rockhampton. Tunbridge and Tunbridge designed many Townsville hotels, including the Metropole (1887), Victoria Park (1896), Lowth's (1897 - demolished), Victoria Bridge (1900 - demolished), Empire (1901), Sovereign (1904) and Carriers Arms (1906 - demolished).

Although work on preparing the Blackwood Street site for the new railway terminus was underway in 1900, the station building was not erected until 1914. Despite this delay, the Great Northern Hotel proved popular with travellers from its opening. Designed and run as a first-class hotel, the Great Northern offered a high standard of service, good food, comfortable airy bedrooms, and spacious public rooms. It also played a major role in the social life of the growing town. As with most early hotels in Australia, the Great Northern was a place for the community to meet and socialise, and for nearly a century the hotel has remained a popular drinking venue and prominent and well-known element of the city townscape.

Tomato leaf and its dew drop..

They last only a brief moment and yet, I invite you to look

more closely at these droplets that fertilize the earth and

convey the memory of life in their wake. Nature collects them

patiently on bent grass stalk and leaf’s welcoming hollow.

According to the legend recorded by Homer they were Aurora’s

tears, the goddess whose roseate fingers initiated the day..

Here is the continuation of my large summer-2018 project.

I had imaged this region for about 13 nights altogether between July and October 2018. You can call me crazy, using so many nights for just one object, in a region where clear nights are rare :) But I really wanted to see if I could catch this beautiful Supernova remnant, and I'm glad it succeeded :)

Recently Pixinsight was supplied with the new Starnet++ module, which you can use to completely separate the stars from the background. I used this software to enhance the very weak nebulosity and was astonished to see how much more could be drawn from the background compared to the processing I did last year. All other processing was performed using Astropixelprocessor and photoshop.

Supernova remnants (SNR) are formed when a large star ends its life in a supernova explosion. About 300 of these remnants are currently known in our galaxy. One of the most famous remnants, the Veil Nebula, is located in the constellation of Cygnus. Although this is the most famous one in this constellation, it’s not the only SNR. Cygnus contains several obscure SNR’s, among which SNR 65.3+5.7 (also known as SNR 65.2+5.7).

SNR G65.3+5.7 was discovered by Gull et al. (1977) during an OIII survey of the Milky Way. Some parts of this SNR were already catalogued by Stewart Sharpless in his SH2 catalog as SH2-91, SH2-94 and SH2-96, but they were not recognized as being part of a bigger structure at that time. The idea that they could be part of a larger SNR was postulated by Sidney van den Bergh in 1960, but it took until 1977 for this to be confirmed.

This is one of the larger SNR in the sky spanning a region of roughly 4.0x3.3 degrees. Mavromatakis et al. (2002) determined the age of the SNR to be 20.000-25.000 years and the distance about 2.600 – 3.200 lightyears. The shell has a diameter of roughly 230 lightyears! This SNR is a predominantly OIII shell with also some H-alpha signal.

This supernova shell is quite weak and there are hardly any high-resolution images of this region. In the internet maybe 5-10 deep images of this shell can be found and, in most cases, they don’t cover the entire shell or the resolution is quite low because it was done by using photo lenses at short focal lengths. That’s why I decided to see if I could try to image the entire shell using my equipment, a TMB92 refractor in combination with a QSI583ws ccd camera. Because of its large size I needed to make a 3x3 mosaic to cover the whole region.

As so many nights were already necessary to cover the region in OIII I didn’t succeed in grabbing the H-alpha data, but on the internet I found the MDWsurvey (mdwskysurvey.org) initiated by David Mittelman (†), Dennis di Cicco, and Sean Walker (MDW). This is a marvelous project with the goal to image the entire northern sky in H-alpha at a resolution of 3.17”/pixel. I contacted them and told them of my effort to grab imagery of this SNR and they were very kind to provide me with the H-alpha imagery of this region, so that the entire SNR could be brought into view in reasonable high resolution.

This bicolor image shows a combination of about 53h of OIII data (made by myself) and 20 hours of Ha-data (made by the MDW survey) in a single image. In this way the full span of the shell can be seen in all its glory.

Alfred 23 Harth’s arrival in Seoul marked a significant moment that catalyzed the formation and nurturing of several enduring off-site experimental music circles, of which two foundational examples are Park Chang-Soo’s Houseconcert series starting in 2002 and Bulgasari, initiated in 2003 by Yukie Sato (later led by Lee Hanjoo). These circles, strongly supported by A23H in their early stages, have had lasting influence and continue to shape Seoul’s avant-garde music landscape today. The Houseconcert series is recognized for its intimate settings that break down traditional barriers between performer and audience, hosting myriad musicians and establishing a notable history of fostering experimental performances. Bulgasari, curated by Yukie Sato and later Lee Hanjoo, evolved as a key site for improvised music and sonic experimentation, regularly showcasing innovative music and performance art with a regional and international scope.

By 2005, the emergence of Relay, a more digitally specialized circle founded by Ryu Hankil, expanded the experimental music infrastructure. Alfred 23 Harth supported Relay in its formative years, and through his contacts—including a key liaison with the city cultural office—Relay gained vital resources, enabling them to invite foreign musicians and gain international recognition through press coverage such as in The Wire and invitations to European festivals. From Relay’s activities arose dotolim around 2009, a venue and concert series that has become a stable hub for improvised and experimental music performances to this day.

Between 2000 and 2005, Harth also actively engaged with multiple off-site circles in Seoul, growing in presence with projects like the electro-acoustic improvisation and video collaboration “Provisional Government” with Kim Hyung Tae at Sal Bar in 2002. His collaborative network expanded by inviting international musicians such as Joe Foster, whom he introduced to the Seoul avant-garde and Tokyo experimental scenes through CDs, festivals, concerts, and art performances from 2003 onwards, or Phil Minton, Wolfgang Stryi, Kevin Norton, Carl Stone, Fabrizio Spera, John Bell, Ned Rothenberg, Axel Dörner and Nicola L.Hein.

Harth’s collaborations extended into projects such as Ensemble Naeil and frequent performances at the Park Chang-Soo Houseconcert series and Bulgasari events, including archival recordings made at LaubhuetteStudio Seoul, like "Seoul U'You" (2002), Ensemble Naeil live (2003), and ballet music for the "Mercury Mix" (2004). These recordings and performances saw the pairing of Korean experimental musicians Choi Sun Bae, Kim Eun-Young, Kim Gyu Hyoung, and others with A23H’s boundary-crossing improvisational style.

Moreover, major performances like the Revolving Door at Seoul Museum of Art (2004) for the Yi Soonjoo exhibition and concert collaborations at institutions including KBS TV and Dankook University (with musicians such as Choi Sun Bae, Kae SoO-jung, David Choi Changu, Chris Varga) highlight A23H’s central role in bridging experimental music with broader arts and academic venues in Seoul. Throughout the years, A23H remained active in Relay and later Dotolim performances, including curated festivals and gallery exhibitions/concerts such as Happyi Mistake (2014-2019) and mosaic concert series curated by Sunjae Lee (2024/5).

Overall, Alfred 23 Harth’s arrival and sustained presence in Seoul from 2000 onwards were instrumental in supporting, shaping, and internationalizing Seoul’s off-site experimental music culture, providing mentorship, artistic collaborations, and organizational contacts that seeded multiple vital circles which remain active and influential in the contemporary scene today. This legacy is encapsulated in a rich archive of live recordings, collaborative projects, and documented performances that continue to resonate within Seoul’s vibrant avant-garde community.

Red-tailed Hawk, Lake Country, BC

A tunnel under the grounds at Quinta da Regaleira - it leads from the main ritual well to the Unfinished which is less elaborate and of darker intent.

We have a number of the Galahs who come for some seed on a daily basis who have, entirely off their own bat become trustful enough of us to take seeds from our hands. They get Sunflower seeds because those are favourites but not too many because, well, too much of a good thing can be no good for them.

We consider ourselves blessed that they have basically initiated this behaviour and it is fascinating to watch young ones watch the older ones and learn to trust us and get their reward. Most of those who partake are actually boys, we rarely get girls for some reason. But Miss Bitey (for want of a better name right now)* is not only not a juvenile, of which we currently have many but is also a rare lady. But unlike all the others, she does nip fingers which is an extremely rare behaviour. But she is not being aggressive, just over enthusiastic for her treats and tends to snatch which sometimes gets you a bite. However, she is getting better and maybe we can even give her a new and proper name.

Many of the Galahs are very dexterous and do the whole dehulling process with their beaks alone. Some always lift the seed to their mouth and hold it with their foot (50% right footed and 50% left footed) and others swing both ways. Whatever, it's always fascinating to watch them. This shot shows my wife handing out the treats. We love this interaction.

Normal food is Wild Bird Seed which is a broad mix of different types of seeds, most of which they eat but there are a couple that they just don't like. We usually buy 5 or 6 20 kilogram bags at a time! The Sunflowers are lightly included in that mix but we also buy these rather expensive seeds in separate 15 kg bags!

A couple of weeks into January, we decided to rename her Missy.

Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Portugal

Quinta da Regaleira is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". It consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park featuring lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire", from the nickname of its first owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro.

The "Initiation Well" or "Initiatic Well" (sometimes referred to as the "Inverted Tower") is a 27 meter staircase that leads straight down underground and connects with other tunnels via underground walkways.

The Initiation Wells (AKA initiatic wells or inverted towers) are two wells built in the Unesco World Heritage Site, Quinta da Regaleira, in Sintra, Portugal.

The property consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions.

Of the two wells, the larger one, in the picture, contains a 27-meter spiral staircase with several small landings.

These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites.

The spacing of these landings, combined with the number of steps in the stairs, are linked to Tarot mysticism.

INITIATING THE F.C.BARCELONA HIS TOUR TO U.S FROM BARCELONA WITH DESTINATION JFK

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure which unites the cultural diversity of Islamic world, the historical and modern values of architecture and art.[2] His final resting place is located on the grounds beside the same mosque. The mosque was constructed from 1996 to 2007.[3] It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. The building complex measures approximately 290 m (960 ft) by 420 m (1,380 ft), covering an area of more than 12 hectares (30 acres), exclusive of exterior landscaping and vehicle parking.[4]

As the country's grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers. During Eid it can be visited by more than 40,000 people.[1]

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center (SZGMC) offices are located in the east minarets. SZGMC manages the day-to-day operations, as a place of worship and Friday gathering, and also a center of learning and discovery through its educational cultural activities and visitor programs.

The library, located in the north/east minaret, serves the community with classic books and publications addressing a range of Islamic subjects: sciences, civilization, calligraphy, the arts, coins and includes some rare publications dating back more than 200 years. In reflection of the diversity of the Islamic world and the United Arab Emirates, the collection comprises material in a broad range of languages, including Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Korean.

In the years leading up to Wew War 2, the South Yafrani government initiated the construction of nearly a dozen different classes of cruiser, the Kongo-class heavy cruiser (CA) among them. Conceived as fast, well armed (and reasonably well protected) vessels, the Kongo class was intended to be the South Yafrani Navy’s main scout. Her unconventional turret arrangement allowed her to level two thirds of her main armament against pursuing ships, and her high speed (for a heavy cruiser) enabled her to outrun the bigger ones.

Famed for their durability, low maintenance and reliability, these ships would serve in their original configuration (with some needed modifications to the anti-aircraft armament) until a number of years after the end of the war. With larger and more capable heavy cruisers abound, the class would be removed from service in the 1950s, it’s more modern cousins being better suited to conversion into guided missile cruisers (CGs).

The ships would languish in port until 1980 when faced with the complete destruction of their navy, the now independent ‘Wêreldryk’ sought to modernize the Kongos. However, none would be commissioned before the Wêreldryk’s fall at the end of the year (see D&C VI). So, the unfortunate ships would continue to sit unused until the outbreak of the Great Demon War in 1982.

The desperation born from the Demon War saw every available gun, tank and ship alike pressed into service. The Kongos were no exception. Even facing an unearthly enemy nearly forty years after they were first laid down, the Kongos proved their worth again and again. With the end of the Demon War in 1988, the ships returned to port to undergo significant refits. Now, redesignated as Guided Missile Cruisers (CGs) themselves, Kongo and her sisters will likely serve into the 21st century as Yafran’s largest active warships.

Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺, lit. "Temple of the Silver Pavilion"), officially named Jishō-ji (慈照寺, lit. "Temple of Shining Mercy"), is a Zen temple in the Sakyo ward of Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the constructions that represents the Higashiyama Culture of the Muromachi period.

History

Ashikaga Yoshimasa initiated plans for creating a retirement villa and gardens as early as 1460;[1] and after his death, Yoshimasa would arrange for this property to become a Zen temple. The temple is today associated with the Shokoku-ji branch of Rinzai Zen.

The two-storied Kannon-den (観音殿, Kannon hall), is the main temple structure. Its construction began February 21, 1482 (Bummei 14 , 4th day of the 2nd month). The structure's design sought to emulate the golden Kinkaku-ji which had been commissioned by his grandfather Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It is popularly known as Ginkaku, the "Silver Pavilion" because of the initial plans to cover its exterior in silver foil; but this familiar nickname dates back only as far as the Edo period (1600–1868).

During the Ōnin War, construction was halted. Despite Yoshimasa's intention to cover the structure with a distinctive silver-foil overlay, this work was delayed for so long that the plans were never realized before Yoshimasa's death. The present appearance of the structure is understood to be the same as when Yoshimasa himself last saw it. This "unfinished" appearance illustrates one of the aspects of "wabi-sabi" quality.

Like Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji was originally built to serve as a place of rest and solitude for the Shōgun. During his reign as Shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa inspired a new outpouring of traditional culture, which came to be known as Higashiyama Bunka (the Culture of the Eastern Mountain). Having retired to the villa, it is said Yoshimasa sat in the pavilion, contemplating the calm and beauty of the gardens as the Ōnin War worsened and Kyoto was burned to the ground.

In 1485, Yoshimasa became a Zen Buddhist monk. After his death on January 27, 1490 (Entoku 2, 7th day of the 1st month), the villa and gardens became a Buddhist temple complex, renamed Jishō-ji after Yoshimasa's Buddhist name.

After extensive restoration, started February 2008, Ginkaku-ji is again in full glory to visit. The garden and temple complex are open to the public. There is still no silver foil used. After much discussion, it was decided to not refinish the lacquer to the original state. The lacquer finish was the source of the original silver appearance of the temple, with the reflection of silver water of the pond on the lacquer finish.

I try my best not to be a broken record but I feel the need to share something I've shared before. Those of you that have been with me for a while know how passionate I am about the conservation of Bald Eagles.

Some of these majestic raptors are literally fighting for their lives; the competition for even a small scrap of food is fierce. I've seen very underweight Eagles, many with missing feathers, some with missing eyes & bad injuries but they are resilient and continue to fight on to survive.

That being said what can we do as photographers to minimize our impact on them? Bald Eagles have very fast metabolisms and can only fly (physically flapping their wings) for 28 minutes a day or they will lose weight. I have shared this before but a point I can't make enough. I've seen people walk up to trees and power poles forcing Eagles to take flight just so they can get a shot.

This particular Eagle was perched low near the road when I used my car as a blind to get a shot. Another Eagle flew by carrying food and this one with several others were in hot pursuit....

Dear friends,

Well, I was hoping to enjoy summer but I have to deal with the divorce instead initiated by my husband. It’s not the easiest time but I hope for the best.

Please forgive me not commenting you photos every time I upload new images. Actually the images are old – they were taken far back in June!

Enjoy the summer!

Does not the very word 'creative' mean to build, to initiate, to give out, to act - rather than to be acted upon, to be subjective? Living photography is positive in its approach, it sings a song of life - not death. ~ Berenice Abbott

Louis XIV initiated the project by an order dated 24 November 1670, as a home and hospital for aged and unwell soldiers: the name is a shortened form of hôpital des invalides[citation needed]. The architect of Les Invalides was Libéral Bruant. The selected site was in the then suburban plain of Grenelle (plaine de Grenelle). By the time the enlarged project was completed in 1676, the river front measured 196 metres and the complex had fifteen courtyards, the largest being the cour d'honneur ("court of honour") for military parades. It was then felt that the veterans required a chapel. Jules Hardouin Mansart assisted the aged Bruant, and the chapel was finished in 1679 to Bruant's designs after the elder architect's death. The chapel is known as Église Saint-Louis des Invalides. Daily attendance was required.

Shortly after the veterans' chapel was completed, Louis XIV commissioned Mansart to construct a separate private royal chapel referred to as the Église du Dôme from its most striking feature (see gallery). Inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the original for all Baroque domes, it is one of the triumphs of French Baroque architecture. Mansart raised its drum with an attic storey over its main cornice, and employed the paired columns motif in his more complicated rhythmic theme. The general programme is sculptural but tightly integrated, rich but balanced, consistently carried through, capping its vertical thrust firmly with a ribbed and hemispherical dome. The domed chapel is centrally placed to dominate the court of honour. It was finished in 1708.

The interior of the dome 107 meter of height was painted by Le Brun's disciple Charles de La Fosse with a Baroque illusion of space (sotto in su) seen from below. The painting was completed in 1705.
